April Groceries - Part 4

April Groceries Part 4

I ordered the last lot of April groceries on Thursday, April 30 and they were delivered on Friday, May 1.  But, that's okay, because I'm thinking of this week as the last week in April, as far as the grocery budget is concerned.

My last grocery shopping delivery was on April 17.  I had planned to get a grocery delivery on April 24, too, but, didn't feel the need to and so, didn't.  As a result, I had $89.51 left in my April budget, which felt good.

Once again, I tried to order things that were on sale with digital and personal coupons.  One or two items I ordered (frozen green peas, regular cucumber) weren't available, but, I had specified substitutions (store brand frozen mixed vegetables for the green peas, English cucumber for the regular cucumber) and that worked out well.  The store brand chicken drumsticks and the fresh salmon fillet I ordered weren't available, either, but, I didn't want substitutions.  The dozen extra large eggs were free with a Best Customer coupon!

Here's the receipt:

My total came to $70.42.  I had saved 26% on my original total of $93.17 due to coupons and sales.

My April grocery budget was $250 - $3.70 March overspend = $246.30

Total spent to date = $59.53+ $57.18 + $40.08 + $70.42= $227.21

Balance remaining/carried forward to May = $246.30 - $227.21 = $19.09

I would have spent at least $17 of that balance remaining if I had received the chicken and the salmon I had ordered.  But, since they were out of those two items and I chose not to get substitutes, I can carry the $19 forward into May.

I am already planning my May grocery list!  I opened a new 10 lb. bag of rice, today, so I want to buy another 10 lb. bag of rice to replace that.  I am out of potatoes (and have been out for a couple of weeks, now), so I'd like to buy another bag of potatoes.  And I would really like to buy more chicken before long!

How about you?  Do you have a grocery budget?  If so, did you keep to your grocery budget in April?  Did you come under?  Did you go over?  Do you carry over any remaining funds or deduct any overspending from the next month's budget?  Or, do you draw a line after each month and start over with a new budget at the beginning of each month?

  1. We don't have a grocery budget per se. We just try to shop wisely and I know we are lucky that we are able to do that.

    1. It sounds like you have a system that works well for you, June, and that's a blessing, isn't it? :)

  2. I do not have a set grocery budget. I buy my groceries based on the weekly ads, and tend to stock up, so some months I barely buy anything, while other months I might spend a lot. It all balances out in the end.

    1. Sounds like you, too, have a system that works well for you, Anne. You are right - it does balance out in the end, doesn't it? :)

  4. I always get confused when confronted with gallons as opposed to litres. I'm not sure if I should apologize or you! 😀😀😀

    1. I'm sorry, Bushlady; I get a bit confused too because I grew up with the imperial gallons and one pint being 20 ounces, not 16! There are 3.785 liters in one US gallon (as opposed to 4.546 liters per imperial gallon) and 1.89 liters in half a US gallon. My one quart (32 fl. oz.) of milk would be just under one liter (0.946 liters).

  5. I'm now contemplating getting a delivery of groceries each week. I've never really been on board with the idea, because of substitutions and Lily's dietary requirements. But I'm thinking that I could possibly get the bulk of my shopping delivered, and top up from another supermarket while she is at youth club - the only time I go into the big town.
You got some great deals. I managed to get a dozen eggs for free, this week, as well. My friend gave me some of her fresh duck eggs, so I'm going to make a quiche. X

    1. It might be something to look into, Jules. Like you, I, too, was doubtful about getting groceries delivered, but, I am appreciating the convenience of it. If you can specify which substitutions are acceptable or which items you do not wish to be substituted, you could get at least some groceries or other household items like paper towels, dish detergent, etc. delivered. It might free up some time and make things a bit easier.
Yay for getting free duck eggs from your friend! Enjoy the quiche you are planning to make with them. :)

  6. Well done!
I had a nice week off not having to decide what to cook lol. Now I'm back to it. One of the stores nearby is having a 7 for $7 sale and several of the items are quite good so I have stocked up on a few of those. Now that it's starting to get a bit warmer, we'll be eating a lot of salads.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Welcome back. That sounds like a pretty good sale; I'm glad you were able to stock up on a few of the sale items. I need to start eating more salads, myself. :).

  7. You had another very good month. Money leftover is a good month for sure.
I was over by $61 so I did not have such a good month.
What's a person to do when the brand flakes she eats are on special for $1 a box? Well she is supposed to buy 5 boxes.
I realize $5 does not equal $61 but it's all that comes to mind. lol

    1. Thank you, Debra. I'm sorry you were over your budget, but, I'm sure those additional $61 were well spent. Yay for stocking up on cereal at $1 a box!
