January Grocery Shopping and Meal Plans - Part 1

January 6 Groceries

On Tuesday, January 6, I put in an order for groceries and picked it up in the afternoon.  I bought chicken, salmon fillets, bread, bananas, a cucumber, an iceberg lettuce, a packet of crackers, and, not pictured above as I had already put them in the fridge, a half gallon of milk and a half gallon of half & half (they didn't have the quart size I ordered).

Chcken was on a buy one get one free sale, so I stocked up on chicken thighs for daughter who prefers chicken thighs.  I also discovered that the store had store brand chicken drumsticks, a 4/5 lb. package for $5, and I bought a tray of that for myself as I prefer chicken drumsticks to thighs.

My total came to $65.05; here's the receipt:

I put one of the trays of chicken thighs in the freezer for later and kept one tray in the fridge to cook on Wednesday.  I baked the tray of chicken drumsticks and sauteed the salmon with onions and tomatoes added to it.

As part of my overall focus on wellbeing, I am trying to get back to a low salt diet due to my blood pressure issues, while recognizing that almost everything one buys that is processed (like the sliced bread) will have salt added to it.  For now, I am trying to cook without added salt.  So, I added garlic powder, ground black pepper, and paprika to the baked chicken and lemon juice to the salmon.

My tentative meal plan for the week:

Brunches:  Uppuma, peanut butter toast, banana and peanut butter, scrambled eggs (with or without toast), baked chicken drumstick and salad

Dinners: Salmon and rice; baked chicken drumsticks with baked potato and salad; soup; chicken curry with rice, sauteed cabbage, and coconut sambol; leftovers.

Snacks/Desserts: Yogurt with fruit preserves and granola; fresh fruit; dried fruit; crackers with peanut butter; frozen burritos for daughter.

I am grateful for:

- Being able to order groceries online and pick up
- The availability of groceries
- A safe drive to the store and back
- Working appliances
- Weekly trash pick up

Have you done any grocery shopping in January, yet?  Are you making a meal plan for this week?

  1. You generally prepare spicy food, so hopefully you won't miss the salt too much. However, I recently made some bread and forgot to add the salt-just a teaspoon for the whole loaf and it was not good.

    1. The funny thing is, I find I can eat less spicy food without salt, but, the spicy curries, etc., don't taste good without salt! It's a matter of training my taste buds, I suppose.
I've read that old bread recipes called for a lot less salt than newer recipes do, because the yeast they used wasn't quite as reliable and salt inhibits yeast. As a result, bread used to taste quite bland.

  2. Yesterday I bought extra eggs, as they were on offer, and also extra bread flour [⅓ off] Planning to work through my store of cans this month.

    1. You did well to buy extra eggs and bread flour when they were on offer. I had plans to eat items from my pantry, but, I've realized that much of it will not go with a low salt diet! Sigh.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Yes, I'm stocked up on chicken for now. I'll be on the look out for a decent sale on beef, next. :)
