September Days

Baby Possum

This baby possum showed up at the sliding glass door one night, checking to see if there was any kibble the cats might have left.  It was probably about 8 inches long, but, obviously big enough to be be on its own.

This week, has been a fairly productive week.

On Monday, I picked up groceries, called for a donations pick up and scheduled that for the following Monday, tried unsuccessfully to call to schedule a home inspection that I was told was necessary for insurance renewal purposes, watered the back garden, and took the trash cans to the curb for pick up on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, I bought the trash cans in, called and rescheduled an upcoming doctor's appointment as I had double booked myself for that day, and called and left messages about scheduling the home inspection.

On Wednesday, I had M take the room air conditioning unit down from the window as the forecast said there would be rain Wednesday night into Thursday.  If the a/c unit is left on the window ledge when it rains, the rain water drips down onto the window sill and gets that wall wet.  I've had water damage to that wall repaired, earlier, and I don't want to risk getting the wall wet again.  Besides, we went up to 95F on Tuesday and I didn't use the a/c and I doubt if it will get warm enough for me to want air conditioning during the rest of this month plus it will start to get cooler in October.   One of M's other clients had given him some doughnuts and he shared them with us:

Doughnuts Shared by M

It rained late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning.  We had light showers in my area, which helped the garden a little bit but, according to the news, other areas received quite a lot of rain as a result of tropical storm Mario, resulting in mudslides and flash floods.  I'm glad we only had the light showers.

On Thursday, I paid my auto insurance renewal and, after several days of trying, managed to get hold of someone at the insurance company to discuss scheduling the home inspection.  Apparently, the person who sent me the letter regarding needing a home inspection is no longer with the company and the phone number he had given me to the inspection department was no longer in service!  The new agent I spoke to was very apologetic and told me she had sent an email to the inspection team and someone will call me to schedule the apartment in 10 to 12 business days.  If not, I have her name and number to call.  I want to get this inspection done sooner rather than later just in case they say I need additional repairs done before they can renew my home insurance.  I am also hoping that the premiums will not be astronomical as home insurance companies are raising their rates for houses in my state.

In addition, I sorted through a couple of pantry shelves in the kitchen.  And I sorted through a bag of clothes that daughter had decluttered.  I kept aside a few long sleeved blouses and a couple of sweaters that fitted me to add to my fall/winter wardrobe and I added a couple of items from my closet to the bag of donations.  I did a couple of loads of laundry too and folded and put away my items and the household items.  Daughter put away her own clothes.

On Friday, I made passionfruit lemonade with all the passionfruit I had picked this summer and a lemon.  Daughter and I enjoyed it and M liked the glass I gave him to try.  I cleaned out the fridge drawers, washing the drawers, relining them with kitchen towels, and putting things back.  I had stored some end slices of bread in one of the drawers and I make croutons with some of them.  My daughter and M both enjoyed them, fresh out of the oven, as a snack!  I also wiped down the kitchen counters, the microwave, and one half of the stove top and under the burners, etc.  It's the side I cook on the most; I will clean the other side on another day.

Plans for Saturday include sorting through more clothes that daughter has decluttered and being on hand to help daughter as she sorts through the spare bedroom.  Plus some cooking and catching up on a few blogs.

This week, I am grateful for:
- What I was able to accomplish
- The rain we received on Thursday
- The warm late summer days
- M's help with the garden and other tasks
- Garden produce

My joyful activities have included spending time in the garden, watering and weeding; reading; doing sudoku; watching videos.

How was your week?  What are your plans for the weekend?

    1. The passionfruit lemonade was a big hit over here. We drank the last bit of it today and now we will wait until we get more fruit, next year.
You have a busy weekend and your friends are very blessed to have you as a friend. :)

  2. Interesting about the home inspection. I have never heard of that. Maybe the future of insurance? I had a possum out my back door once (years ago). I yelled for my kids to come and see it and the mother possum came and picked it up and carried it away before our eyes! andrea

    1. Yes, I think after the recent floods and fires, insurance companies here are re-evaluating their insurance policies. Some people have been denied coverage and others have had their rates increased. I've been with this company for over 30 years, but, loyalty doesn't count for much, these days.

  3. You certainly have had a productive week, Bless.
Light showers would be great - it's been raining very heavily pretty much every day here, this week. It's pouring even as I type. I think the depleted reservoirs will have filled up again now :) Not to worry, we're forecast some sunner days this week. Lily has asked for her hot water bottle this evening - it isn't cold, she just wants to be extra cosy.
I'm glad you managed to sort out your insurance and your home inspection. Fingers crossed your premiums wont increase too much. We don't get inspections here. We just fill in a form with all the necessary information. An inspection would only take place if we needed to claim, and if we hadn't completed all the necessary information they might not pay out! Thank goodness I have never needed to make a claim.
It sounds like you're still doing great with your decluttering. Mine has made a huge difference, and is still ongoing. And if anything wears out or breaks now, I don't automatically replace it.
    Have a lovely weekend. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules.
It was a light shower in my area, but, other areas received more rain and there were mudslides and flooding. Hopefully, your rain has replenished the reservoirs and you'll get several days of sunshine and summer before autumn arrives. A hot water bottle will keep Lily feeling nice and cosy, I'm sure. :)
Even here, I think it is more common to fill out a form to get insurance renewal. I have already filled out the form for the renewal, but, I also received this letter stating that I needed a new inspection. I think it is due to the recent fires and mudslides. I do hope it will all go smoothly. I've had this same insurance company ever since I bought my house and I've never filed a claim. I don't know if that will carry any weight or not.
The decluttering is going well. I've 15 bags of clothes and household items ready to leave the house on Monday. 15 bags is the maximum the charity people will pick up at one time. Once those bags are gone, I will have several more items ready for another pick up.

  4. I hope the opossum found something to nibble on! Its little hands are quite endearing. I have only ever encountered Australian possums, most memorably when one jumped on my bed when I was asleep! (We were camping.) Those doughnuts look most indulgent. I'd have chosen the one centre right. Well done on such a productive week. I too am finally making a dent in that never-ending to do list. Feels good.

    1. Oh, yes, the opossum found plenty of kibbles to enjoy. :)
The doughnuts were a lovely treat and it was very kind of M to share them with us.
I'm glad you, too, are getting some things crossed off your to do list. :)

  5. A stranger wandering in, but a step-friend via Nana Diana, and the by word of the lovely person who chose her seat at the table "because Bless will be there." What a sweet accolade to a friend-online!

And you had me from "baby possum"! We live next to a State Park, and have lost several of our older neighbors in the past years---those who "kept out the kibble," and tried to see the little creatures through the Winter, and we inherited the herd. I find myself coming home with those 16-lb. bags of "Kitty Food," as my bagger at the store will heave two bags into a separate buggy everytime I step into the store, and set them in my trunk for my little fur charges. A tiny possum was out there by herself last night, barely visible atop that big tray of food, sitting in a little corner nibbling away---we have several the size of poodles, along with seven raccoons, and the original seven kitties abandoned over the years as they found our buffet. The cats sleep in our WeatherBush---an immense round evergreen the size of a greenhouse, layered up in there on limbs like flowers on a cake.
Just wanted to come in and say hello to someone so memorable and interesting that you have your own fan club---and I brightened even more, when I saw someone who ALSO counts the days by the Trash Bins today, the lawn guys on Friday, etc. Lovely to meet you!! rachel at LAWN TEA blog

    1. Hello, Rachel. So nice to meet you. Thank you for letting me know that someone chose to sit at the same table as me! I had to go and check who it was. A very dear online friend. :)
Oh, yes! I know all about the 16 lb. bags of kibble! These days, I buy the 22 lb. bags and have them delivered. I feed the stray cats who call my garden their home and the visiting raccoons and the occasional possum. There used to be rabbits, too (who escaped from one of the neighbors who never bothered to try and get them back) and a chicken who would fly over the neighbor's wall to spend her days in my garden. We have a lot in common! I look forward to your next visit. :)

  6. I found a young possum in our yard the other day, but it was dead. Really dead, just not playing possum. It didn't look like it had any trauma, like from a predator, so I was leery touching it as thoughts of rabies entered my mind. It laid there a couple of days with flies gathering around until the entire carcass disappeared one day. I like how the circle of nature takes care of itself.

    1. I, too, found a dead possum in my front yard, many years ago, and wondered if it was "playing possum", but, it wasn't. Nature does take care of itself when allowed to do so, doesn't it?

  7. Since Lady Ella has chosen the donut on the center right, I'll take the one on center left.. :) I took several bags to the charity shop yesterday. Need to sort much more still. I don't know what it's like for you, but every time I clear out some stuff, more just appears to replace it. I'm impressed you got rid of that many bags!

    1. I will reserve the center left doughnut for you, Celie...next time! :)
Much of what was decluttered this time were daughter's clothes and accessories, items she has outgrown, her old dance and Halloween costumes that she didn't want to part with, earlier, etc. We still have more items to donate, but, the charity will collect only 15 bags or boxes at a time.

  10. Panic set in, when I saw that Celie and Lady Ella had already chosen their donuts. Put me down for the bottom one, please! The baby possum is so cute. Maybe he would like a donut, too.

    1. No need to panic, Bushlady. We can always get more doughnuts! :D You get the bottom one, which is blueberry. I'm sure that the baby possum would enjoy a doughnut! Daughter said the coconut one was her favorite.

  11. Happy that the blog went quickly from the opening picture to the donut one. lol
I am with your daughter in selecting the coconut one for my personal consumption.
I am curious as the the flavor of the missing one.

    1. LOL, maybe I should have started with the doughnuts picture? I'm not sure what the missing doughnut was - I think it might have been the one that M chose before giving the rest of the box to us - but, I'm sure it was tasty. :)
