Today has been the hottest day yet, this summer. 108F outside, according
to my cousin who saw that number posted somewhere on her way back from
church. I managed to keep the house to a comfortable low 80s and it was
fine until early evening, when it got warm and stuffy inside the
house. But then, I opened the windows and went outside to water the
back garden and it was cooling off, outside.
Withered Bean Plants |
My
poor bean plants have got withered for the heat!
Wonder if they'll revive? |
The one patty pan
squash that is forming looks like it might have been pre-baked!

The tips of the tomato plant, too, have withered for the heat:

But the plant, itself, is thriving (and there are tiny tomatoes, forming!)
Almost Up to the Second Tier! |
The squash plants had looked droopy during the afternoon, but they recovered in the evening and got watered, well:

The
orange tree is showing signs of distress, with curled up leaves:

One of the lemon trees looked bad, too, but I am
hoping it will revive.
Daughter and I spent a quiet morning, together. We chatted a bit and she helped me change my passwords on my accounts. I am always hesitant to do such things on my own because I am afraid I'll mess up; she is my tech support. Daughter was very kind and encouraged me to have more confidence in myself, telling me that I was an intelligent woman and was more capable than I give myself credit for being.
Earlier, one of my friends had called and we had made tentative plans to go out to lunch, today. But today, she called and we postponed the lunch date for another day, maybe in early July. I invited her to come and
spend the day at my house anyway, but she declined.
Later, in the early afternoon, one of daughter's friends came to give her a ride to their other friend's party. Daughter stayed on after the party to help with the clean
up and rode home with her friend.
I
spent the evening sewing a blouse for myself. I have to finish the
neckline and armholes, which I'll do tomorrow (still trying to decide if
I want to add sleeves to it - probably not). The fabric is some lace
that my mother had bought. I lined it with some other fabric that was also in her stash.
Today, I am grateful for:
- Fans!
- Being able to keep the house relatively cool for the most part.
- Daughter having fun with her friends.
- Water for the garden.
- Someone sleeping with her head on my lap while I type this. (I make a comfy pillow, I've been told.)
Tomorrow (Monday), daughter flies back to Berkeley. Her flight is in the early afternoon, so we'll spend the morning together (I've taken a day of vacation from work) and then, I'll drive her to the airport. Other plans for tomorrow include sewing my blouse and tidying up the house a bit.
Monday's To Do List:
- Take daughter to airport
- Finish sewing my blouse
- Put away sewing machine, etc., and tidy the dining table
- Empty waste baskets
- Take trash cans to the curb
- Water the indoor plants
- Water the front garden
- Video chat with daughter in the evening
How was your Sunday? Is it hot where you are? Are you managing to stay cool?
Oh my goodness! that is hot. I hope your plants can revive themselves. I laughed when I read 'Fans' on your list of things to be grateful for.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're able to stay cool today and I wish for a safe journey home for your daughter tomorrow. X
Thank you for the well wishes, Jules. I am very grateful for the fans since I don't have a/c). I have ceiling fans in each of the bedrooms and the family room. I have stand fans in addition - one in the living room-dining area, 2 others in the family room that get moved as needed, and a table fan in the kitchen, on top of one of the counters. So far, I've only needed to have just one fan on at a time. There have been days when it gets so hot even inside the house that I've had more than one fan going at the same time.
DeleteWe've had some hot weather recently, but nothing over 100. Do have much humidity to go with those extreme temperatures? Those two usually go together here. And I don't care what they say. You do too feel dry heat when it's over 100. At least that's been my experience.
ReplyDeleteFortunately, we don't have that much humidity, Live and Learn. I think the humidity makes it worse. But you are right. One does feel the dry heat, too, when it gets hot enough, just as one feels a blast of heat when one opens the door of a pre-heated oven.
DeleteOh no, your poor garden! Mine is not doing well either, as the rain predicted for the past 3-4 days never materialize. I need to go water today. It's hot here too but we have central AC and I'm very grateful for it.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a nice weekend and got to see your daughter! I always write down my new password right away when i have to pick a new one, otherwise I'll forget it in between the first field and the "retype your new password" confirmation field, hahaha.
It is supposed to cool down towards the end of the week, but there is no rain in the forecast. Summer really isn't the time for us to garden. Nor is early Fall. Mid-October to Spring is the best time.
DeleteI might, eventually, have my gardener friend set up the window a/c in my bedroom. I generally don't need it till later in the summer.
I usually pick words that I can remember without any difficulty. But, this time, daughter suggested that I changed things a bit more, so I did. I did write them down, though. :)
Oh my ... I thought our high 90s temps were hot but 108 is just awful. How often do you have to water to keep things alive when it's that hot out? Whew! Love that you can sew your own clothes ... and sounds as if your Mother had a really wonderful supply of fabric. So sweet that you and your daughter had a nice visit! :)
ReplyDeleteCarolyn, I've been watering every other day, but if it gets any hotter (and it will, probably towards the end of summer/early fall - it always does), then, I'll need to water daily! Which is why so much of my garden died last summer, when it got hot and I wasn't well enough to water as often as I should plus with the drought, I had reduced my watering to once, or maybe twice, a week.
DeleteLet's just say that I am trying to sew my own clothes! :D I am not sure how well this blouse will fit. The proof will be in the wearing! Mother used to go downtown to the "Garment District" which sells fabric, trimmings, and clothing at wholesale prices with one of her friends every so often and buy fabric for a dollar or two a yard and trimmings for a few cents per yard.
It has been a nice visit. I'll miss her when she leaves. We haven't decided when her next visit will be.
Hope you stay cool in your heatwave, Carolyn. Hopefully, you have a/c?
Wow that is some extreme heat! Hope the plants and the people around survive the heat wave. It is unseasonable cool here right not and we are loving it!
ReplyDeleteIt is supposed to cool down to the mid-to upper 70s later this week and that will be a welcome change, I'm sure. The city and county have opened designated cooling centers (senior citizen centers, recreation centers, etc.) and they will be open for extended hours for folks without air conditioning. The malls, too, tend to be a popular place to hang out when it is hot. I'm lucky I can escape to my air conditioned office, this summer (unlike last summer, when I worked from home).
DeleteHeat just seems to drain me and I have little energy so I real am impressed that you soldiered on and finished sewing your blouse. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI'd have your gardener friend put the window unit in sooner than later. That way if you feel you need it to help you sleep you are all set.
We have had a little break in our extreme heat but the forecast is for it to be right back by Wednesday! Oh well it has been very pleasant for a couple of days.
Sandy, glad you had a couple of days of respite from the heat. I don't feel the heat too badly, especially since it is not humid. I'm not likely to engage in vigorous exercise or anything like that, but sitting down at the sewing machine with a fan blowing on me is pleasant. It is supposed to cool down to the 70s, later this week, so that will be a welcome change.
DeleteHope you are having a fine day, today. Stay cool!
BLess your heart.. It is really hot there.. Proud your enjoying daughters visit..
ReplyDeleteThank you, Judy. Her visit went by too fast! Hope it is a bit cooler where you are and that you are keeping well.
DeleteI love that your daughter is so encouraging and tells you to believe in yourself :) 108F is very hot! I don't think I'd cope well in that heat at all. And what a shame about the plants, hope a good watering managed to revive them. xx
ReplyDeleteSuzanne, I've been so blessed in that she has always been very supportive of me, encouraging me to do new things. It was she who encouraged me to take dance classes at the same studio where she was taking classes. I thought she'd be embarrassed - after all, she was a teenager and I was some 185 lbs. and had two left feet! But no, she was very encouraging and proud of me for doing it! The studio had an annual concert and daughter and I were in the same dance routine a couple of times and it was so much fun! The studio closed when the instructor moved to another state. Daughter and I continued to take some ballet classes together, but then, her schedule became too busy and we stopped.
DeleteHang onto your hat Bless. We are presently at 15 degrees here in Kingston (in the morning on June 17th)according to our weather app. Actually, it is reportedly feeling like 14 Celcius, which translates to 57 degrees Farenheight, which is HALF of your temperature. If it were possible we would gladly average out our two temperatures. I would gladly give up half our rain as well. So far our summer has been almost non-existent. At least yesterday had some periods of sun (and 17 degrees), but today feels downright frigid. Hopefully, this will be the coldest it gets. This afternoon, it is supposed to climb to 18 degrees. Woo Hoo! I remember when we lived in Thunder Bay (Northwestern Ontario), there was a whole week of above 100 degrees Farenheight. It was impossible for me to do anything but take cool showers and lie on top of my bed. I don't know how you get anything done.
ReplyDelete57F is winter for us! LOL. I hope it warms up a bit more for you, later in the summer, before you go into winter! I am sitting under the fan right now, and not feeling like doing anything much!
