On Saturday, the rain stopped and we had clear blue skies and sunshine!

All the plants thrived in the rain. We've been picking some of the baby kale, arugula, and the leaves of the Japanese herbs to add to salads.
And the volunteer tomato plants are flowering!

I hope we have a warm enough January and February for the tomato plants to survive!
On Saturday, I made a small batch of blueberry jam with homegrown blueberries I had frozen. I used 4 oz. quarter pint canning jars instead of my usual 8 oz. half pint jars. The jars of jam are for gift giving. Then, I wrapped a few gifts, ready for giving.
In the late afternoon, we visited cousin V. We had tea with her and her husband and exchanged gifts with her. I also took additional gifts for her to distribute to members of her family that I will not be seeing until after the holiday season.
As we left V's house, we could smell natural gas outside and we were concerned. V called the gas company and she was told that there was a gas leak in a different city and the wind directions were such that the gas could be smelled in V's area! Apparently, many people in V's area had called the gas company about the gas smell. Later, V sent me a news video about it and how a major freeway was closed. V's husband has family living in the city experiencing the gas leak and they had spent Christmas Day with them! Residents were being told to shelter in place.
Daughter and I spent a relaxed evening after we came home.
On Saturday, I was grateful for:
- All the rain for the garden
- The garden plants are thriving

Saturday's joyful activity was visiting my cousin.
Plans for Sunday include wrapping more gifts and sewing two table runners.
How was your Saturday? What are your plans for Sunday?

Sounds like another full day. I am sadly not a gardener, but I have thought about planting salad greens just for their beauty alone. I enjoy your garden pictures and reading about how much pleasure they bring you.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lovely day. :) Salad greens will grow very nicely in a planter. More garden pictures will be coming up in a future post. :)
DeleteGlad you got a decent (not overwhelming) amount of rain. Did you put your buckets and other vessels out to try and catch some of it? I hope you will get some more before the season is out, as I know you can't count on any later, as the year draws on.
ReplyDeleteThe garden really appreciated the soaking and everything has perked up. I planned to put out the buckets, but, didn't quite manage to do so. However, more rain is in the forecast for New Year's Eve and Day, so, I shall be sure to set out my buckets, then. :)
DeleteI heard all about the gas leak in your city this morning on the news. I hope it's all under control now.
ReplyDeleteI heard that the freeway was reopened earlier on Sunday morning and I guess repair crews are working on the gas mains. I wonder if the recent rains and saturated ground had something to do with the gas mains rupture.
DeleteYour greens and herbs are doing very well and look at the tomato flowers! I hope the weather is good for them this winter.
ReplyDeleteThat's a scary thing - the gas leak. I hope things got fixed and tended to and no one had to leave their home.
The plants are thriving after the rain! I hope I'll get some winter-grown tomatoes because the summer grown ones didn't do all that well.
DeleteI think they have the leak contained and repairs are being done. I don't think there were any evacuations.
It sounds like you had some delicious Christmas dinners! I am not sure I'd shelter in place for a gas leak; I'd want to get far away! I was to drive to my sister's today, but there's heavy snow falling along the route so I've delayed a couple of days. Driving in this weather really stresses me. I hope you rains stay away for a bit so you (and Moo) can dry out.
ReplyDeleteWe did have some delicious meals over Christmas!
DeleteYes, sheltering in place is dubious at best when it is a gas leak, but, they had closed the freeway, too, and I guess it was quite a bit of a traffic snarl with just regular traffic.
I'm glad you decided to delay your visit to your sister by a couple of days. I would not want to be out driving in a snow storm. We are having a couple of sunny days before the next rain storm, in the forecast for New Year's Eve and Day.
I love the rain and your rain photos are gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda. I don't mind the rain as long as I am not out driving in it. :D
DeleteThe flower is really beautiful
ReplyDeleteIt's actually rained here in Michigan all day today. Tomorrow it's going to snow all day - we're under a Winter Storm Warning from 1am. Surprising how quickly the weather can change! It's going to drop 30 degrees in the next few hours!
Thank you, Sharon.
DeleteWow! You are having quite a change in temperatures from one day to the next! Hope you get through the winter storms without any mishaps.
Those plants look really happy with the rain. I do hope that the tomato plant is able to survive and produce fruit!
