| Mockingbird |
It's Wednesday early morning as I type this; a quick mid-week catch up post.
I was up bright and early on Monday morning; well, bright and early for me, anyway. I went to bed after 3:00 a.m. and was up by 6:45 a.m. to be ready for the service technician from the gas company to arrive. It used to be that you could book a morning only or evening only appointment, but, when I booked the appointment this time, there were only all day/anytime during the day appointments, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Since the gas company was providing this service free of charge, I was not going to complain. So, I was up, bright and early on Monday.
The gas company called me at around 11:00 a.m. to let me know that the technician was on his way, he'd be at my house in 5 to 10 minutes, would there be someone home to let him in, etc. and I assured them that I would be home. The technician arrived shortly thereafter and checked the furnace. He made a few adjustments (they will make adjustments, but, will not repair any appliances) and did an adjustment on the thermostat, too. Then, he told me that it was good to go and left. Of course we are having a mini heatwave, currently (we went up to 93F on Tuesday and we will go up to 92F today), but, the furnace is ready for when it does get cold, eventually.
I thought I might take an afternoon nap to make up for getting less than 4 hours of sleep, but, I wasn't tired or sleepy. Instead, I caught up on a couple of blogs, cleaned the kitchen counters, did a short walk up and down the driveway, called the pharmacy to see if they were taking walk-ins for vaccines (but, couldn't talk to a pharmacy staff in person, so, left a message), took the trash cans to the curb for trash pick up on Tuesday, took the kitchen compost to the garden, and watched some online videos.
Brunch had been a cold cuts sandwich. For dinner, I cooked a fish curry with the frozen fish I had bought at the Sri Lankan store and steamed more dehydrated stringhoppers to have with it, along with seeni sambol. I wanted something soft and easy to eat because my dental bridge was becoming very loose.
If I thought I'd go to sleep early on Monday night, it didn't happen. What did happen was the dental bridge came off when I brushed my teeth before going to bed! And, I think one of the teeth that was anchoring it broke off, too. I'm glad it came off before I had gone to sleep, because it had been so loose that I had been concerned that it might come off when I was asleep and I might choke on it. Fortunately, I was not experiencing any pain or discomfort, which is a blessing. But, I rinsed my mouth with warm salt water as a precaution against any infections.
On Monday, I was grateful for:
- The gas company provides free annual furnace (and other gas appliances) safety checks
- The furnace passed the safety check
- Warm, sunny weather
- The bridge came off on its own
- I am not in pain or experiencing any discomfort

My joyful activity for the day was spending time in the garden.
On Tuesday, I slept in and woke up quite late. One of the first things I did after I woke up was call the dentist's office. I explained what had happened and said I wasn't in any pain. The receptionist I spoke with checked with the dentist and, after confirming that I was not in pain, it was agreed that I could wait until Monday, when I have an appointment with the dental hygienist for a deep cleaning, to come in and the dentist will take a quick look.
I spent a rather relaxed day after that. I brought the empty trash cans in, checked on the garden, watched some online videos, called friend R, texted with cousin N, spoke with a couple of my neighbors, and took it easy. I had leftover stronghoppers and fish curry for brunch (daughter had rice and beef curry). For dinner, I thawed and reheated a container of ham and split pea soup I had made and frozen, earlier. Daughter blended it with her immersion blender and we both enjoyed a bowl of soup, followed by scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. For dessert, daughter had strawberries and I ate a tangerine. There's more of the soup leftover for another meal.
By the way, Blossom the Skunk visited again on Tuesday night!
On Tuesday, I was grateful for:
- A lovely warm day
- Not being in pain or discomfort due to the bridge coming off
- I didn't have to make an emergency visit to the dentist
- Weekly trash collections
- Working appliances

Plans for Wednesday include tending to the garden with M, doing a load of laundry, and maybe doing some sewing.
How is your week coming along?

Monday sounds action packed. They always have to adjust something just to prove that it's worth them visiting!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that you've had problems with your teeth. So glad that it's not causing you pain, but what an inconvenience.
I love hearing about the wildlife. I've never seen a mockingbird, and I can't imagine having a skunk visit. They look so cute and cuddly, but I guess that they're one animal I really shouldn't squeeze.
Thank you, Lyssa. Monday was a good day. This furnace has had issues such as delayed ignition from the day it was installed, so I'm always happy to have the gas company tech check it for me.
DeleteYes, my teeth are demanding the attention I haven't been giving them for too long!
The wildlife is taking over the garden! :D No, I wouldn't want to squeeze a skunk unless it's scent glands have been removed!
Sorry your bridge came out. Is that affecting the way you eat?
ReplyDeleteThank you, June; yes, well, I can't chew very well from that side because almost all the lower jaw teeth are gone! I'm sticking to mostly soft food for now. :)
DeleteGood October Morning, Bliss!!
ReplyDeleteJust dropping in to see how you're faring this cloudy day up here. We're Heartland and have had excellent weather all month (except for the one day Sis was here from Texas and we got a BLOW for an hour or so that made her want to head for those Texas hills. She did make a dash for the basement stairs when she saw all the front yard trees bending low in the blast. I see you've had very warm temps so suppose you're in the South.
I loved the small diary of your days---indeed the small things are worthy of more gratitude sometimes than the great largesse we all enjoy. And the TRASH PICKUP---I'm just like a kid on garbage day---most times they have passed us on the other side of the street when I get up, and then make our sweep just before noon, but I sometimes catch them and stand like a little kid in the door or on the porch, watching that bright new yellow machine do its starts and stops and swerves and scoops. I know he sees me enjoying the show, and he sometimes waves and makes a great lift-and-dump of the front container into the truck bed. I AM like the little ones with anything involving big rolling machinery, and loved watching the BIG trucks DVDs with the grands (Most of them are old enough to be driving the things, now).
Just wanted to say hello---our meeting was so serendipitous, and such nice things are rare and fine treasures in life. I have several
VERY close friends I've never met, and several that I have---one husband sent me an e-mail anonymously back in 2008, saying that his wife loved my blog and would love to meet; he wanted to give her plane tickets for Christmas that year. They came to visit us here in April, and we've back-and-forthed to different equidistant hotels several times, as well as another week's visit here. I count them as special Bonus friends, right out of the stratosphere (relevant because he and I are TREKKIES, and have great e-mail conversations on space and other books we've read).
I'm heading up to the other kitchen for lunch prep, and since I looked up string-hoppers and saw the mere mention of SAMBAL---I'm headed for the coconut milk and OOLEK. Yum.
Happy Halloween to you wherever you are!!
Racheld, so glad to hear from you again. I was wondering if we scared you off with our requests for banana pudding with chocolate shavings and whipped cream, on a previous post! :D
DeleteToo funny about you watching the trash trucks doing their thing! I've stood outside and watched them, too!
I am in southern California where we are having a heatwave, currently. I love it because I like the warm weather.
Yes, blog friends are rather special, aren't they? We often share more with them about our daily lives than we do with "in real life" friends. :)
I hope you had a lovely lunch and are getting ready for a wonderful evening meal.
Happy Halloween to you, too. :)
I'm sorry that your bridge came out and damaged a tooth (or several?). Good to read that you're not in pain! I hope the dentist can do something on Monday to help, if just temporarily. I think you have a new friend in Blossom!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Celie. The bridge seems to have broken one tooth (or maybe the tooth broke off and that's why the bridge came out). The bridge was designed to span over two extracted teeth, so, now, I have no teeth on that side!
DeleteYou might be right! I might have a new friend in Blossom! It was here this evening, too! I had no idea that there was so much urban wildlife in my neighborhood!
I am glad to hear that you didn't experience any pain!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for all you share on your lovely blog.
I also want to thank you for your kind comment and birthday wish on my blog, it really means so much to me.
Thank you, Linda. I sometimes wonder if I share too much on the blog! LOL.
DeleteI hope you had a lovely day on your birthday and celebrated it with family and friends. Wish you good health and happiness, always.
What a nuisance about your bridge. I'm glad it isn't causing you any pain, at least. Xx
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jules. Yes, it was quite unexpected in one way, but, in another, the first dentist I went to did say that it was practically floating on top and wondered how it was even staying in place! I'm just glad that I'm not in pain.
DeleteThat mocking bird looks very calm, not having to worry about gas technicians and problems with teeth. He's probably admiring your garden, oblivious to the things you are dealing with!
ReplyDeleteThe mockingbird and its friends or family make themselves very much at home in my garden! They will peck the cats (they are masters at dive bombing), so the cats have learned to keep away from them. They help themselves to the blueberries, the peaches, and the feijoa (pineapple guava) flowers (they like to eat the fleshy part of the petals). They nest in some of the trees in the garden and in neighboring gardens, too, and I've seen their babies hiding under the bushes or behind the trash cans! :)
DeleteI hope things go well on Monday for your dental work. My last check-up revealed that an old filling had chipped and decay was starting beneath it, so I had the joy of a 45 minute appointment to drill out the old filling, clean it up and re-do it. It was painless but exhausting lying there for 25+ minutes while the drilling went on and on and on! I have been brushing religiously, and even more carefully since. (Wonder how long that will last!)
ReplyDeleteOh - the aftenoon of the day I read this post, I was doing my daily online crossword and there was a clue to the word "mockingbird". I wasn't 100% sure from the definition given, but it said light grey plumage and I remembered your photo so put it in provisionally, and it was correct!
Thank you, Lady Ella. I'm not looking forward to Monday's dental work (mostly cleaning, unless the dentist decides that the bridge falling out required some work). I hope your refilling lasts a long time and so does the brushing. :)
DeleteGlad to have helped, even if unknowingly, with the crossword clue! :)
