Sunnier on Friday

Friday's Harvest

We had a sunnier day, today!  The house felt cold when I woke up (I had turned the heater off before I went to bed), but, it was warmer outside (63F)!  So, I opened the doors and windows and went outside for a bit.  Walked around the garden, did a bit of weeding, and then, walked up and down the driveway for 15 minutes.

I did a little tidying and sorted through some papers in the afternoon and replied to blog comments. Watched some videos and later, watched the news.

M was here in the evening to tend to the garden and I shared some soup and salad with him before he left.  He fertilized the nectarine tree and the Fuyu persimmon tree which is just starting to form leaf buds:

Leaf Buds on the Fuyu Persimmon Tree

The lantana and plumbago hedge is behind it.   There is a little strip of ground between the persimmon tree and the hedge and I had planted a couple of potatoes that had shriveled up and a sweet potato top.  Both potato and sweet potato vines had died back and I had M dig them up to see if we had anything.  There were four tiny potatoes (shown in the first photo at the top) and one skinny little sweet potato!  I put the sweet potato back in water to see if I can get it to sprout, as it was not worth cooking it.

Today, I am grateful for:

- A sunnier and warmer day
- Having the garden to walk in
- Chatting with family and friends
- M helping with the garden
- Today's harvest!

Today's joyful activity was walking in the garden.

I don't have any specific plans for the weekend.  It's supposed to be sunny and warmer (a high of 68F) on Saturday and cloudy and cooler (a high of 57F) on Sunday.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. I am imagining those freshly dug potatoes boiled and served with a small knob of butter - delicious!
    Happy Friday, Bless. Xx

    1. New potatoes from the garden are a treat, aren't they?
Thank you, Jules; hope you are having a lovely weekend.

  2. Did your potatoes taste good or are you yet to cook them? I really like small salad potatoes as they seem to have a much better flavour. I hope you have a good weekend with some nice warm weather.

    1. I haven't cooked them yet, Eileen. I think I'll have them with my dinner, tonight. I picked some more pea pods from the garden, today, so, dinner might be a piece of chicken, the potatoes, and the pea pods, with a salad of lettuce I picked today. :) Sounds good, doesn't it? Hope you are feeling better, today.

  3. Planting seed potatoes - they have been "chitting" (sprouting) on the windowsill for a week or two

    1. Oh, that sounds good. I tend to plant potatoes that I buy from the grocery store - by the time I come to the end of the bag, some have started to sprout!

  4. I was so focused on your potatoes, I almost didn't see the pea pod you snuck in. :)

    1. LOL. There was only one pea pod picked (say that three times! :D) yesterday, but, I made up for that, this morning! There's enough for a serving for tonight's dinner, with the potatoes I picked yesterday. :)

  5. It sounds like a productive day. What sort of videos do you like watching?

It's Saturday here and I had had great plans to carry on with the next lot of photos for the decluttering but so far I have done everything else but that! It seems I need it to be a pottering sort of day so am going with the flow. I'll do some piano practice this afternoon and have all the ingredients for a lamb keema, so that's today's meal sorted, and tonight I'll make a start on the next book group choice ... The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak.

Hope you and your daughter are well, and hope you have a good weekend. xx

    1. It was a relatively good day. I'm watching an assortment of videos - I watched a walking tour of Bath, a couple of days ago, a walking tour of the Tower of London, Julia Child making cassoulet and "a chicken dinner in under 30 minutes" (which is how long her cooking shows were), some frugal living-type videos, some history videos, etc. Sometimes, I watch quilting videos, and pretty soon, I'll be watching some gardening videos, too.

A pottering sort of day sounds good. You've been quite busy and it wasn't that long ago that you weren't feeling too well, so you probably need to rest a bit, too. Lamb keema sounds delicious. :)

My daughter and I are well, thank you, Eileen. She has some plans to get together with a couple of friends this evening (Saturday) and I am enjoying sitting out in the garden, listening to the birds singing and the neighborhood dogs barking. It's warmer outside than inside, where I have a load of laundry going. :)

  6. There is a persimmon tree not so far from me, which I discovered in the autumn. I must look to see if it is showing any signs of leaf! Good luck with the sweet potato!

    1. My persimmon tree looked like it was dead and then, practically overnight, it started to form leaf buds! Hope the persimmon tree you discovered will be coming out of dormancy, too.
Thank you! The sweet potato is in water to root, along with a mango seed that has one root and nothing else, and there are three Opal apple seedlings keeping them company! :)

  7. Mmmm - new potatoes! You have such a variety of trees, shrubs and flowers in your garden that it seems to me that it is almost like a botanical garden! We had some snow this morning when I was on my way to sing in the funeral choir but by the time we all came out of church it was sunny. I have a bit of laundry to catch up on this afternoon and I want to phone a friend, and tomorrow will be a day of rest, hopefully with a walk, but the road is uneven with icy ridges.

    1. I do have a few different plants, don't I? I have a volunteer plant growing under the orange tree that M thinks is a carob! I have no idea how it turned up in my garden, but, I will let it grow (might need to dig it up and relocate it); it'll be interesting to see if I get any carob pods!
Sounds like you had a busy day! I did some laundry, myself, but, the weather was nice and I spent some time out in the garden, too. :) Enjoy your day of rest, tomorrow.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. It was a good day and today was, too. I only walk up and down the driveway and along the sidewalk in front of my house and neighbor T's house as I feel safe enough to do so without a mask. If I walk beyond that, I wear a mask and that makes it harder to walk as far as I am concerned. But, I am glad I have this safe space in which to walk. :)

  9. Oh look at your little potatoes :) You do well when planting your potato eyes. I should try it. I grew potatoes once a few summers ago when the neighbor gave me some seed potato pieces. I had some success even though I don't think the spot was sunny enough.
That's a nice picture of the persimmon tree with the lush green background.

    1. I'm thrilled to bits whenever I find a few potatoes growing from grocery store potatoes that have sprouted! I've a few that have sprouted in the bag; I've been waiting for the rains to ease a bit before I plant them - don't want them to rot in the rain! Maybe you can plant a few potatoes from the next bag of potatoes you buy. :)
