Errands on Tuesday

Of course, I had to wake up feeling achy and not quite 100% this morning, just when I had a busy day ahead of me (not to mention a busy week!).  I can't afford to get sick this week!  The fact that it was a grey, overcast, and cool day didn't help, either.  But, I couldn't stay home, today, because my library books were due, today, and I couldn't renew them again.  Besides, it is supposed to rain, tomorrow, and it will be a "major storm" according to the weather forecast.   I spent the morning taking it easy and waiting for the Tylenol to take effect.  I had a banana for breakfast and planned my errands route.  Then, I wrote out the checks for the two bills I had to pay this week (due on the 9th and 12th).

Then around noon, I left the house and ran my errands.   First, to the post office to mail the bill payments.  Then, to the library (on the way back from the post office), to drop off the library books.  Then, to the Asian grocery store for rice sticks (2 packages, $1.59@), 2 cans of baby corn ($1.29@), some chocolates for the almsgiving (Almond Roca, $5.88) a packet of frozen scallion pancakes ($3.99, treat for me), and a stem of lemon grass ($.39, to root, as my lemon grass plant died).   My total came to $15.82.  Finally, to the pet supplies store for refills on two buckets of kitty litter ($9.99 per 30 lb. bucket) and a six months supply of flea prevention medication,  My total came to $101.40 with sales taxes.

On the way home from the pet supplies store, I pulled in at the gas station and filled my car, as the gas tank had gone below half.  Gas was $3.59/gal. at this gas station (one of the cheaper chain of gas stations) and my total came to $36.09.

It was a little after 3:00 p.m., when I got home and put away the items I bought.  I heated up one of the scallion pancakes (fry both sides in a saute pan with just a little oil, until the pancake is crispy and a bit puffed up) and had that for a late lunch.

I also called handyman A to tell him that the garage door opener has stopped working.  He stopped by on his way home, this evening, to check it out and found that a plastic piece around which the chain goes has broken.  I am not surprised as this garage door opener is several years old.  He said he will look for a replacement piece and I have him $20 towards it.  Until then, I will have to manually open and close the garage door.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A dry day, even though it was overcast and cold
- Tylenol
- Being able to run my errands
- The availability of specialty foods
- Being able to call on Handyman A

Today's joyful activity was walking up and down the aisles and checking all the different foods that are available at the Asian grocery store.  They had fresh rambutan fruits, ripe jak fruit, frozen durian fruit, lotus root, bundles of kang kung or water spinach, and many other items.  I was determined to stick to my list, today, but, I'll go back another day and buy myself more treats.

  1. I've heard of some of the foods you listed in the Asian store but haven't tasted any of them as far as I know. You've had a busy day despite feeling unwell at the start so give yourself a pat on the back for ticking off all those tasks on your list.

    1. I was very pleased with what I was able to get done, yesterday. At first, the to do list overwhelmed me, especially as the Asian store was a little out of the way for me, but, I planned my route so that I got the most important things done first, so that, if I felt tired, I could stop and come home at any point after I mailed the bill payments and dropped off the library books. Today is a rainy day; I'm glad I don't have any errands to run, today.

  2. Hi Bless, I hope you are feeling better. There is always home maintenance to do, isn't there? I did some cleaning yesterday, and practiced putting the chains on my car. Today I am mopping the floors and sorting paperwork.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. I'm feeling better, today. Still a bit more achy than usual (bone ache and muscle pain are side effects of the medication I take for the cancer, but I've got used to them), but that might be due to the wet weather and cold. There is always some home maintenance, that is true! It's pouring rain, here; is it raining up there, too?

  3. ((((HUGS))) I have been worried about you with the fires and now the rains. I love going to the Asian food store and just looking at all the offerings they have. That is on my "to do" list after Jeff gets his middle of the month paycheck. I need to stock up on frozen udon noodles, miso paste, some greens, and maybe even pick up a few treats too.

    1. Thank you for the hugs, Debbie. :) So far, I'm OK with the rains, but I worry about the burn areas. Too much rain and there will be mudslides! Oh, I hope you enjoy your visit to the Asian store, Debbie. My daughter loves udon noodles, miso, etc. :)

  4. I hope you are feeling better now, Bless. Take vitamin C as well, this cold weather tends to make most of us ill.

I love lotus root, but it's hard to find fresh ones here.

The final exam week started, so I have a lot of grading.

    1. I feel much better, today, Nil, thank you. Yes; yesterday, I squeezed the juice of a lemon into a glass of water and drank that. Today, I ate a tangerine. I also rested quite a bit, today.

One of my aunts used to add slices of fresh lotus root to a soup she made. I think it was my favorite part of the soup!

Sounds like you are busy! I'm sure you'll be happy when the semester is over. :)

  5. Too bad about the garage door opener. They are just so heavy to open and close and when you are feeling achy it can't be much fun. I hope all goes better soon.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I rather miss the ease of opening the garage door with the push of a button, especially in the rain, but, hopefully, it can be fixed sooner or later.
