Just Starting |
I have an on-going "Mile Long To Do List" and, at one time, I used to post it once a month with any updates. I stopped doing that after about a year or so because I wasn't making much progress on some of the items. But, I kept the list going and I last updated it in 2024 when the retractable garage door opener mechanism was replaced. I am happy to say that, on Friday, one other item that had been on that list for years was completed:
- Repair water damage to kitchen ceiling and wall - DONE May 2, 2025!
The roof had leaked one year and caused some damage to the kitchen ceiling and part of the ceiling collapsed, leaving a hole in the ceiling. It was behind the cabinet above the refrigerator and while the hole wasn't visible, I knew it was there and there was some visible water damage to the ceiling just in front of the cabinet and to the wall behind. I had wanted to get it repaired, but, I didn't do anything about it for one reason or another.
Eventually, I showed it to my neighbor E (he does construction work) and asked him to give me an estimate. He didn't get back to me for months, and I thought that he had either forgotten about it, or wasn't interested in accepting the project. But, on Thursday evening, he knocked at my door and said he could get one of his crew to work on my kitchen ceiling the next day! He will be here at 7:30 a.m.
So, Friday morning, I woke up at 6:45 a.m. (after going to bed at 3:00 a.m.), showered, dressed, had a cup of tea, and was ready when neighbor E and his assistant R showed up at 7:30 a.m.
I forgot to take any "before" pictures, but, I took the above picture after R removed the upper molding/trim from the cabinet.
A short time later, it looked like this:

You could see all the way up to the rafters:

Then, the ceiling was patched and painted (R painted the whole ceiling because the new white paint he used was a different white than the existing white on the ceiling and he said it didn't look nice).

After Patching, but, Before Painting |
The wall on the other side (hallway side) where the paint was cracked and starting to peel due to the water damage, was also scraped and patched:

And painted with paint that I had stored in the garage:

After |
The paint wasn't an exact match after being stored in the garage for over 10 years, and R wasn't very happy about it, but, I didn't mind. One day, I will have the remnants of the wallpaper border that's up along the top of the walls in the hallway removed and repaint the hallway. It's the only area of the house that is painted in a color other than white and I might go back to white or stay with the lilac color.
R also went ahead and painted the wall area around the wall heater which was never painted after the heater was replaced a couple of years ago:

The hallway ceiling too, was repaired:
And a crack in the ceiling between the living room and dining area was also patched up:

R painted over the patch, but, the new white paint he used was whiter than the rest of the ceiling and he told me I should get the whole ceiling painted (just as he did with the kitchen ceiling). Yes, actually, I want to get the whole house painted, but, that's a project for another day. For now, I am glad that these repairs were done.
I am so grateful for:
- Neighbor E helping me with this project
- R for all the work he did
- Finally getting this repair project done and crossed off my list!
Now, to tackle the rest of the 101 projects on my Mile Long To Do List!

Do you, too, have a Mile Long To Do List?
Wow! You got a lot done and E sounds like a treasure. It's hard to find a workman you can trust and does good work. You've reminded me that we have a stained ceiling in the basement from a pipe leak that we need to fix.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am so happy that I can call on E to help with some long neglected projects around the house. It's such a blessing. Hope you can get your basement ceiling fixed soon.
DeleteIt must feel like a huge achievement to have got all those things ticked off the list! As is so often the way, one job leads to another but at least you know that the cracks and holes have been made good and will not worsen, and as you say the decorating can come when you are ready. Knowing good and honest workmen is SUCH a blessing!
ReplyDeleteIt does feel like a huge achievement, Lady Ella. And good and honest workmen are definitely a blessing! I was scammed, once, by someone I hired (who was recommended by a former neighbor) and after that, I've been very wary of getting work done on the house.
Thank you, Stefania. Yes, water leaks will often create big problems. I hope you were able to get the damage to your guest room repaired.
DeleteSo nice that you even got the cabinet door fitted with new hinges and the towel rail fixed. We have some projects listed, and were happy to get some done when we had 4 window panes replaced where the seal had failed. Now we need to address the question of the mechanisms on some windows.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady. Home maintenance is ever ongoing, isn't it? I'm glad you had the 4 window panes replaced. Hope you can get the window mechanisms fixed, next. I have several other projects that I'd like E to do as and when he can spare the time.
DeleteHow wonderful to have a helpful contractor next door! It can be hard to find someone reliable to do that. I had a damaged wall from a roof (repaired quickly) leak, and I waited three years for the plasterer to come! There's always work to do on a house, isn't there!
ReplyDeleteIt really is wonderful, Celie. E bought the house that neighbor T lived in and he has been working on it, too. Yes, there's always work to be done on a house, especially one that is 80 years old like mine!
DeleteWell done on getting it done!
ReplyDeleteI need to make a list like that. There are so many things around the house that need to be done.
Thank you, Sharon. A list of projects/repairs is very helpful and finally being able to cross off an item feels so good! Finding someone to actually do the work tends to be the difficult part for me.
DeleteMy gosh! This is wonderful. You must be so pleased.
ReplyDeleteGetting that ceiling done is such a large fix and I'm so happy for you that it's now taken care of. And then, all the other things he did while he was there.
One of the hardest things when it comes to home repair is finding someone to do them. You have solved that problem for sure.
And yes, I have a mile long list too. You are definitely not alone in that respect.
Thank you, Debra. I am beyond pleased! That hole in the ceiling has been on my mind for so long! First, one person was going to fix it, then, another and another. I had the names and contact numbers of at least a couple of people others had recommended, but, it just didn't work out. And now, it is finally done and I can breathe a sigh of relief that it has been completed.
DeleteGlad to know that I'm not the only one with a mile long list! :D
