Pastries and Other Treats |
I have been having some sleepless nights. On Wednesday, I was up all night and finally went to sleep after 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, when I had almost given up on falling asleep. Then, I slept all morning, waking up a few times to feed Dancer, when aunt C called to check on me, and when I heard my daughter talking on a work-related phone call. Each time, however, I fell asleep, again.
The rest of the day passed quickly on Thursday. Daughter and I had leftovers for brunch and for dinner, we cooked some rice and part of a package of frozen General Tso's chicken I had bought, and we made a cucumber salad to go with it. I also made a flan that I had promised to make for my daughter.
Then, the same thing happened again and I stayed up all night! It was 5:30 a.m. before I went to bed! Again, I got up once or twice to feed Dancer, went back to sleep, and didn't wake up till noon! I really, really need to try to sleep by 1:00 a.m., tonight!
This afternoon, daughter and I went to the Cuban bakery that is very popular here to pick up some treats we had pre-ordered. Pictured above, on the plate are a round meat pastry, a cheese pastry and a guava strudel, a seafood potato ball, a chicken croquette, and a chicken empanada. We also bought a French baguette, which is not pictured.
Later, we did some crafting; daughter worked on her beading and I put together a little floral arrangement and a wreath to give as Easter gifts. I will post photos, later.
M was here in the evening to tend to the garden and we shared some of the pastries with him. He did some weeding and clearing; he didn't water the garden because there is rain in the forecast for the weekend. In fact, there is a light rain falling even as I type this at 11:00 p.m. According to the forecast, we'll get a good shower of rain, tomorrow. I'm sure the garden will appreciate it.
Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to sleep in on days following a sleepless night
- Being able to treat ourselves to some delicious bakery goods
- M's help with the garden
- Working appliances
- My blood clot is getting better
Today's joyful activities included crafting, tending to the garden, and enjoying some treats.
We have no special plans for tomorrow. Daughter and I will spend the day relaxing and maybe do a bit more crafting together.
How was your Friday? What are your plans for Saturday?
I feel for you as I know insomnia is terrible. I'm the opposite as I can fall asleep easily but wake after just a few hours and can't get back to sleep again so I get up at silly o'clock rather than lay awake. Your pastries look vert tasty it's nice to have those treats to share with your daughter and M. I will look forward to seeing the Easter gifts you made.
ReplyDeleteThere is a market on today at a castle not too far away from home and dogs are welcome but not too sure if we will go yet as it depends what time husband surfaces as he has had disturbed sleep too.
Thank you, Eileen; I'm sorry you, too, are bothered by sleep issues. At least I can fall back asleep!
DeleteThe pastries were delicious but, there were some bell peppers in one of the fillings and that gave me some indigestion and a bloated feeling! I will know to avoid those, the next time.
I hope you were able to go to the market and enjoyed being out and about.
Hope you have a very happy Easter, Eileen.
Good Friday was quiet and peaceful. I did some gardening, and began a jigsaw. Today will be noisier, the grandchildren are coming!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a day of quiet and peace before the grandchildren arrive, Angela. I know you enjoy having them over, though! Have a blessed Easter!
DeleteWe tried some Cuban food when we were in Miami (you'll be able to read about it soon) - empanadas, and the guava pastries. Delicious! It is nice to craft with someone: I don't really have a crafting buddy nearby, but I'd like to do it sometimes. I hope you get your sleep patterns sorted - probably the best thing to do is to embrace the situation at the moment & not worry about it. Love FD xx
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit behind with some of my blog reading, FD, but, I'll catch up, soon! The guava pastries are my daughter's favorite! It's fun to craft with someone else, isn't it? Thank you, FD, yes, I think the best thing to do is embrace the situation at the moment and not worry about it. After all, I don't have to be up at a certain time in the mornings!
DeleteIt sounds like you're in a vicious cycle with your sleep. Maybe, you're subconsciously worrying about your daughter's return trip. However, at least you are getting some sleep during the morning. Good luck. Laying awake at night trying to go to sleep is the worst.
ReplyDeleteYou could be right, June. Or, maybe I just need to get myself back on a better sleep schedule (perhaps force myself to wake up at a set time, each morning, so that I'll start feeling sleepy earlier). Anyway, I was asleep by 3:30 a.m., last night/this morning, so that's a slight improvement!
DeleteThose treats from the Cuban bakery look wonderful, and certainly worth buying whenever you need to celebrate! I hope you have another relaxing day.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady; I feel that we've had a lot of treats on this visit, but, we are celebrating being together! I'll be limiting the amount of treats once daughter goes back! :) I'm getting some laundry and a little bit of tidying done, today.
DeleteThose pastries from the Cuban bakery look enticing. I love your adventurous palate! I would want to take a bite out of each one.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your sleep struggles. It’s so hard to get caught up once you fall behind on your sleep. Maybe your leg is keeping you up. Did you have a lullaby for your daughter when she was little?
Of course, we sang Rock-a-bye Baby, but my favorite was Lullaby and Good Night (with soft roses around you…slumber sweetly in the moonlight…)
How nice that you did some crafting. I went grocery shopping this morning, did a little cleaning and that’s all.
Be well!!
Their pastries are delicious and there's usually a line of people waiting to buy them! We decided not to get any of their cakes, this time, but, they have some delicious cakes, too!
DeleteI am a night owl, I guess! I used to have to get up at 5:30 a.m., at one time, and I did so, but, I was sleep deprived during that time, functioning on about 4 hours of sleep a night!
Yes, I used to sing lullabies to my daughter when she was little! Lullaby and Good Night was one of them! There was another one about pretty little horses that she loved (Hush a bye, don't you cry, go to sleep you little baby, when you wake you shall have, all the pretty little horses). Maybe I should sing lullabies to myself! LOL.
I enjoyed the crafting. I'm doing laundry and a little cleaning, today. Glad you were able to go grocery shopping; was the store crowded?
The pastries look delicious! Today I went to lunch with friends at the Indian restaurant. It's very good but probably not very authentic! I had shasi paneer. We celebrated my turning 65 today. How time passes. A nice thing about being retired is you can set your hours however you want!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, Celie! Wish you all the best!
DeleteHow lovely that you were able to celebrate your birthday with friends over an Indian meal. I'm sure the shasi paneer was delicious! It's a northern Indian dish, I believe.
Yes, that is one of the many benefits of being retired! One can stay up all night and sleep in all morning, if one wishes to! :D
I am not hungry but after looking at the pictures of the pastries, my mouth would love to have a few bites.
ReplyDeleteWell, the next time you are passing through So Cal (maybe another visit to Universal Studios or Disneyland with Pip), check out Porto's. :)
DeleteOh my - what a nice picture to welcome me as I open this blog post.
ReplyDeleteI would have a hard time staying out of that Cuban bakery!
Everything looks so good.
I hope you get your sleep pattern readjusted - if that's what you want. But really, with being retired, you could just do what you want as far as staying up late.
You are a night owl. And you are getting the sleep you need.
That bakery is so popular, they recently opened a fifth location! Their food is delicious!
DeleteI like staying up till late, but, I don't like sleeping away the morning, either! I went to bed at 4:00 a.m., last night, but, woke up at 10:00 a.m., which is not bad. I need to bring my bed time up a little bit!
