Groceries on Friday

Blessed by Neighbors

Last night, neighbor S's daughter N texted my daughter, asking if we'd like some extra pantry items!  N had been given some pantry items by a family she knows who are going to Australia; N wanted to share some of it with us!  How kind is that?  This morning, S brought over a grocery bag filled with all what is shown here!  Boxes of macaroni and cheese, pasta, a container of beef broth and one of chicken broth, instant soup mixes, gravy mixes, evaporated milk, a tube of condensed milk (never knew such a thing even existed!), ranch dip mix, a jar of whole nutmeg, a jar of minced garlic, three individual size containers of jam, a box of hot cocoa, a box of crackers, some drink mixes, and a big bag full of powdered vitamin C supplements!  Such generosity!

In the afternoon, I picked up the groceries we had ordered, yesterday.  Today's pick up was perhaps the smoothest to date.  My pick up slot was between 2 and 3 p.m.  At 1:00 p.m., I received a text asking me to authorize substitutions for two of the items I had ordered, which I did.   I pulled into the parking spot at 2:14 p.m. and called the store to let them know I was parked outside.  Within minutes, a store employee was loading the trunk of my car with my groceries.  I checked the time when I pulled out of the parking slot - 2:18 p.m.!  Less than 5 minutes!

Today's groceries included stocking up on ground coffee for daughter, since her favorite brand of coffee was on sale, a tray of chicken thighs @ $.99/lb., fruits (bananas, mangoes, blueberries), vegetables (cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, carrots, sugar snap peas, onions), snacks and treats (including a frozen pizza for dinner), as well as some non-grocery items (hair conditioner, a jar of petroleum jelly, multipurpose liquid cleaner, and snack size zippered plastic bags).

I also bought a package of frozen pollock fillets to give to friend R, after she said she liked the fish curry I had made with them (no bones!).  I took it and some of the vitamin C supplements I had received from my neighbors over to her.  I had called her to let her know that I was on my way and she was waiting outside her apartment building, with a bag containing the empty containers from when I took some curries and cake over to her, last week, and two cans of sardines in tomato sauce because we had reminisced about having sardines on toast during one of our phone calls earlier in the week.

Later in the afternoon, M came over to tend to the garden.  He did some weeding and mowing and afterwards, I made us some tea.  I gave him some of the packets of vitamin C powder, too.

Brunch had been one of the leftover curry puffs from yesterday.  Dinner was some of the frozen pizza with a fresh orange (picked earlier in the evening) for dessert.

It was a partly cloudy day with a little bit of drizzle (not enough to make much of a difference); a bit on the cool side, with the day time high in the mid50s and night time temperature dipping down to 40F.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Neighbors S and N sharing the pantry items they received
- Being able to pick up groceries curb side
- A safe drive to the grocery store and friend R's and back
- R giving me the cans of sardines
- M tending to the garden for me

Today's joyful activities included chatting very briefly with neighbor S when she dropped off the pantry items and with friend R.

How was your Friday?  Have you done any grocery shopping in March, yet?

  1. I did a small grocery shop yesterday - trying to use up my as much as possible of my cans and packets before we move, as well as empty the freezer. But eggs, milk, fresh fruit and veg were on my list. I cooked fish and chips for tea - but used a different recipe to coat the fillets. It didn't work! F&C is a trad Friday dish in many English homes (Rosie has "F&C Lunch Friday" at school each week) I had coley fillets - a bit like pollock. White fish but cheaper than cod or haddock.

    1. It takes time to eat down the pantry and freezer, doesn't it? I'm sorry your new recipe didn't work out well. I like fish and chips, but, I haven't tried making it at home! Maybe I should try it with the pollock fillets.

  2. How lovely of your friends to share with you - that's a really generous gift.

I always have sardines in brine but Ced preferred the ones in tomato sauce, the same as you. Do you cook with them or just eat them on toast?

    1. It really is very generous of them to share with me. I like to eat the sardines as they are with bread or on toast, but, my mother used to add onions to them and cook them a bit.

  3. That was quite a windfall of food from N. Are there things in there that you usually don't buy?

    1. It really was! There are some items that I don't usually buy, like the packets of crock pot gravy mixes and the microwavable mac and cheese, and even the cartons of broth - although I buy cans of broth, sometimes, to keep on hand as emergency food. Then, there are one or two items, like packets of instant mashed potatoes, that I've considered buying (again, as emergency pantry food), but, haven't bought, yet. We will enjoy trying everything out, I'm sure. :)

  6. That was lovely to receive those grocery items and be able to gift some and try others that are new to you. I wonder, do you keep those tiny jars when they come your way? I can't resist hanging on to them!
I was grocery shopping this morning and was surprised how quiet it was. Since yesterday's weather was so appalling I thought every man and his dog would have been out today when it was fine, but they must have been sleeping it off. Well, my trip wasn't quite as swift as yours but it didn't take too long to go round the two stores.

    1. It really was lovely, Bushlady. The little jars are cute, aren't they? I can easily see me using them for some craft supplies (containers for beads, perhaps) or reusing them to fill with homemade jam! :)

Glad you were able to do your grocery shopping when it wasn't too crowded. :)

  7. You sound like you're in the flow. Those are fantastic staples for your pantry. Great to have in an emergency...I picked up my basket of produce from our local co-op on Friday. I usually shop at Vons and go at 6:00 a.m. when the they open. It's safer, and everyone wears masks.

    1. They are great pantry items to have on hand, aren't they? Sounds like you are set for groceries between the co-op and early morning trips to Vons. :) They opened a new Trader Joe's closer to me and I am waiting to give them a try once I feel safe enough to shop in person!

  9. What a nice collection of items your friends passed on to you and your daughter.
And your grocery pickup went so smoothly.
I know you like to stock up on your daughter's coffee. I'm glad you had the opportunity to do that with this sale.

    1. I was so happy to receive all the pantry items from S and N. We tried one of the soup packets, today - the one shown on top of the packets of Trident soups - Tom Yum Goong (Trident is apparently an Australian brand); the soup was spicy and delicious. My daughter loved it. I found the recipe online and we might try making it.

Yes; the coffee she likes is regularly priced $9.99 for the packet. So, when they go on sale for $6.99 and there is a $1.50 off coupon valid up to 5 uses, I stock up! With the sale and coupon, each packet came to $5.49. :)
