Celebrating Puzzle Day

Making Progress on the Jigsaw Puzzle
As Bushlady stated in her comment on yesterday's blog post, today, January 29, is Puzzle Day!  To celebrate Puzzle Day, I spent some time in the late afternoon-early evening, working on the puzzle.  My helper alternated between napping and grumbling because he thought I should be giving him more tuna to eat!  But, he didn't come to help, because he was sulking that I wasn't very impressed when he tried to show me that he was a mighty hunter and attacked my leg, earlier in the day!  Ouch!

I went to the home improvement store, this afternoon, to buy a new padlock ($14.97 plus tax = $16.39).  I also bought four euryops plants for the garden at $5.98 each, which, with tax, came to a total of $26.19.  At one time, I used to have a whole hedge of them growing in the front garden, along the walkway to the front door.  After several years, they died out.  I want to try growing them, again.  M will help me figure out a good spot in which to plant them on Friday.

They had lavender plants, too, for $6.98 each, and I was tempted to buy some.  The lavender plants I bought and planted a couple of years ago didn't do well and all but one plant died.  The one plant that survived looked more dead than alive, but, it is starting to come back.

Today, I went through my closet and turned all the hangers around the other way.  Once a garment has been worn, washed, and returned to the closet, the hanger will be turned back the usual way.  The idea behind this is to be able to tell, at a glance, which outfits have not been worn, yet.  If, at the end of six months or one year, there are any garments hanging with the hangers turned the other way, indicating it has not been worn, then, it is time to ask myself why I haven't worn it and why I am still keeping it.  I did this at the beginning of last year, with my daughter's help.  After one year, the only three garments with their hangers turned the other way were three dresses that my mother had sewn for me.  I don't fit into them, anymore.  But, I keep them for sentimental reasons, because my mother sewed them.  This might be the year when I give them away, maybe.

In the evening, I practiced the piano for a bit.  I wonder if I'll get any stickers, tomorrow!  LOL.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A sunny, warm day
- New plants for the garden
- Fresh oranges from my tree
- My eyesight
- All the clothes my mother sewed for me (and for my daughter, too)

Today's joyful activity was looking at all the plants and choosing some for my garden.

Thursday's To Do List:
- Piano lesson
- Dishes
- Clean the kitchen
- Laundry

How was your Wednesday?  What are your plans for Thursday?

  1. I did the turning the hangers thing and realised I was only wearing a very few items. It seemed too drastic to pass the majority of my wardrobe on to others so I currently have the unworn things packed in a suitcase. If I take something out of the suitcase it can be returned to the wardrobe but anything left after six months will go to the charity shop.

Today (Thursday) I am hoping to get out and take some photos but the weather isn't looking too promising so it may be a reading day at home in the warm.

    1. Well, some people say that we wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time. I, too, tend to reach for the same handful of garments, most of the time, especially now that I am retired. Keeping the unworn items in a suitcase for another period of time, before donating them, is a good idea. This way, you know for sure that those items are not missed.

I hope you have a good day, whatever you choose to do. :)

  2. The turned-hangers system is very good. I do it too, and it DOES help sort out which clothes I am not wearing.

    1. If nothing else, it is a reminder that there are other options in the wardrobe! :)

  3. Did you ever think about taking pictures of those dresses, so you can still have something for the memories but with something that takes up a lot less room than the actual dresses?

I don't know how we missed Puzzle Day. I guess we will have to celebrate Belated Puzzle Day. :)

    1. Yes, someone else had mentioned taking pictures of the sentimental items I find hard to give away. I was not receptive to that idea, at the time, but, will consider it now. For me, a lack of space is not the problem. There is sufficient space. It's just that I am trying to have less to possess. If I am not wearing a garment, why am I keeping it? Is the fact that my mother sewed it a sufficient reason to keep it? If I am not reading a book, why am I keeping it? Is the fact that I read it once and enjoyed it, I might want to read it again, good enough reasons to continue to keep it on the bookshelf?

Celebrating belated Puzzle Day is a good idea! Enjoy!

    2. How about using the dresses to make a memory quilt or cushion?

    3. That is a possibility! Thank you! :)

  4. Isn't it amazing how we wear some clothes more than others. My friend calls them her "go to" clothes. I am looking at my wardrobe and wondering whether I should cull certain items, but I can often dream up an excuse for keeping them!
Good progress on the puzzle. I see you don't agree with Dancer about leaving off the edge pieces! 😻

    1. I guess we all have our favorites we tend to wear all the time. Oh, I am very good at coming up with excuses to keep my clothes!

Ha, ha, he tried to take the edge off, again, today! I managed to fit in a few more pieces, today. :)

  5. Your cat attacks you???? -sigh- Not goooood.

The turning hangers thing... Interesting. But I keep only what I wear. So don't have to do that. -smile-

    1. Yes, he does. He wants to play and rough house, but then, he has sharp claws and teeth!

That's how it should be, Wisps of Words; we should only keep what we wear or use. I'm trying to get to that stage. I tend to hold on to things for too long!

  6. I looked what euryops were. They are like daisies, aren't they? A hedge of euryops should look very nice.

Maybe you can use pieces of those dresses in a quilt?

    1. Yes, euryops are also called bush daisies. They bloom year round, too. Maybe something to consider for your garden?

I am considering the quilt option for the dresses; thank you! :)
