I opened those windows I could open (some of the windows have screens that are torn, or don't have any screens at all, so I don't open them in order to prevent flies and other insects from coming in and a certain Dancer from going out!) and the front door (there is a metal security door, so keeping the wooden door open is OK) to air and cool off the house. Then, I had a cup of coffee, responded to blog comments, and checked my work emails, just in case, and cleared my in-box; I'll be doing that every couple of days until I retire and my work email account will be closed.
Cousin P called and came over to visit and she brought me the two extra pieces of boxed wedding cake cousin V had sent through her. We chatted for a bit and, as she was leaving, she asked me to let her know if I plan to go to the Sri Lankan store, as she'd like to go with me. I will need to go one of these days to buy more of my favorite tea from them. I opened one box of 100 tea bags, recently, and there are 2 more boxes in the pantry; I usually drink one cup of tea each evening, and, when daughter is home, she will have a cup of tea with me, so a 100-count box will last me a good three months. But, this tea is not always in stock, so I like to stock up on them, when I can.
After she left, I changed the sheets on my bed, swept the living room, dining area, kitchen, hallway, and my bathroom (didn't want to vacuum and disturb my daughter), and set up the big brass lamp in its usual spot between the fireplace and the bookcase in the living room.

Daughter had a video conference call in the afternoon, and I retreated to the bedroom to keep out of her way. I read a bit and was just settling down for a nap when she came in and turned on the room air conditioner for me, ignoring my protests that I was fine without it! But, I must admit, I had a good nap in the cool bedroom.
After my nap, I warmed up the last two waffles from yesterday's brunch and shared them with daughter for tea. Then, I washed the blanket from my bed. This blanket has seen better days, but it'll do for now. However, I might turn it into the batting for an everyday/utility quilt, using fabric I have in the stash.
Later in the evening, daughter and I went shopping. We went to our favorite discount clothing store and daughter, who is looking for Fall clothes, purchased 11 items - tops, skirts, leggings, sweatshirts, and a couple of dresses, all for a total of $48.50. After we came home, she tried them on and we will go back to exchange two of them, tomorrow. I looked to see if there was a white, short sleeved blouse for me, but I didn't find anything I liked. I will keep looking.
Today, I am grateful for:
- The window a/c unit in my bedroom
- Afternoon naps
- Discount clothes shopping
- Getting a few things done while it is still cool in the morning
- A nice visit with cousin

The lamp is beautiful (as is the whole setting). I hadn't imagined it to be so big.
ReplyDeleteThe lamp is about 4 1/2 ft. tall. It comes apart in pieces, so easy to transport (although, quite heavy). Every time I think I should donate it to the temple, someone asks to borrow it! LOL!
DeleteI always pictured your big oil lamp as more of a jug and I was wondering how difficult it was to keep moving it every time someone wanted to borrow it, lol. Does it come apart in several pieces?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you're enjoying being able to go to bed when you want without having to worry about getting up early! I have been enjoying being able to go back to bed after I cook Greg's breakfast, even if I don't go back to sleep.
But checking your work email while on vacation? Oh no, no, no, Bless! You're a workaholic! The place won't fall apart without you, and they need to get used to you not being there, my dear. You need to enjoy your time off without any guilt, you're earned it!
I hear you about stocking up on your favorite tea because they don't always carry it. Every time I find something that I really like, it's either a "seasonal" item or it gets discontinued shortly after I discovered it! It's irritating.

Yes, the lamp comes apart in pieces. 7 pieces to be exact. Which helps when polishing it and transporting it.
DeleteLOL! I used to always shake my head at people who checked their emails when they were on vacation, but here I am, doing the same thing, myself! Only because I don't want to go back to the office one day, in mid-August, when I have to hand in my retirement paperwork, and find hundreds of emails clogging my in-box! I am not replying to any of the emails - I have enabled an automatic notification which states I am out of the office and to please contact my supervisor, if needed. Just going through the list and deleting most of them and keeping only what might be needed to have a record. Once I formally retire, the account will be closed and I won't need to check it, again. :)
Don't you hate it when they stop carrying items you like? The tea is shipped to Canada, from what I understand, and then, clears customs there and are imported to the US. How the newly enforced tariffs will affect that is something I don't know, yet! We'll find out, I guess. The only certain thing is that the prices will go up! The last couple of times I bought this particular tea, I paid $5.49 per box.

ReplyDeleteWith your current blanket freshly washed, I hoped to encourage you to consider rotating it to quilt filling and choosing a different blanket for daily use. With the likelihood of more visitors like 'P' informally stopping by, and for your own increased time at home, an upgrade from your inventory is warranted...don't you think?
Sorry to be nagging but there are a lot of reasons to support the idea of making small repairs one, by one as circumstances change over the long term. Have you replaced your butter dish? I suggest you and DD review house to list items to attend, repair, update and upgrade over time. I'm including really small stuff like dumping baking soda, hot vinegar down all the drains [one by one] , checking condition of hoses on washer and the screens you've commented. We consider replacing screens DIY [You Tube instruction] but it might be something your gardener would undertake for a fee. Alternately, one by one for easy transport to a hardware or door outlet.
Should you travel to Sri Lankan store [with 'P' or others], you might call the day before to ensure they have the product desired.
Have you chosen a new pharmacy? I mention Costco is one of the largest dispenser of RX primarily because they charge a tiny dispenser fee compared to other pharmacy. A review of your annual cost will tell you if the cost of membership and travel is easily recovered by price differential. I'd shared the cost of membership with DSIL until her passing. I'm sharing membership [we each have our own card] with DS in spite of the fact that we live in different cities. Do any of your relatives use Costco to share membership for their next renewal?

DeleteWell, if I turn my current blanket into a quilt batting, I'd be using it as a daily quilt on the bed, because I don't have another blanket to use, instead. The only other blanket I have is assigned to the visitor's bed (although I don't have many visitors who stay the night).
Definitely not nagging, Hon. I've a Master List that is a mile long, listing all the things I'd like to repair/replace/upgrade, etc., room by room! I just haven't had time to do much of it, yet.
No, I haven't replaced the butter dish, yet! I did look in the dollar store to see if they had one, but they didn't. I've a couple of other places to check. In the meantime, the stick of butter sits in the fridge, on a saucer, covered with a small glass container, in lieu of a butter dish, and that's fine with me. :)
I need new frames for the window screens - the current frames are, themselves, too deteriorated and flimsy to be fitted with new screens, in my opinion. But, I might take one with me to the nearby DIY center and see what they think.
Yes, I usually call the SL store ahead of time to find out if they have the tea in stock, before I go. Their stocks vary with when the shipments come in, and, from what I understand, the shipments go to Canada first, and clear customs there before being imported to the US. Very often, when I call, they tell me the shipment is waiting to be unloaded or to clear customs!
No, I haven't chosen another pharmacy. I think things have become better with my current pharmacy. As for costs, I have a maximum annual co-pay limit on my medications under my current insurance. Once I reach that maximum, all my medications are free of charge, to me. Besides, the current pharmacy is closer to me and easier to access than Costco. I am really not a big fan of Costco.

The photo of the bride and groom and the wonderful lamp is so interesting and so colourful, like a scene out of a play, or a beautiful painting. How splendid to be able to lend your lamp for such glamorous occasions!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady. The lamp received a lot of prominence as the DJ announced that the bride and groom will now light the lamp, followed by the parents of the couple. That's my cousin V seated to the left. This was the only picture that showed the least amount of faces!
