July Grocery Budget: Week 1

July Week 1 Groceries: Bread, Dairy, Meat, Nuts, Beverages
I went grocery shopping today.   It was the first time I went grocery shopping since picking up some milk ($1.99) on 6/22 (the milk put me $3.78 over budget in June).

I went to two stores - the Armenian grocery store and the regular supermarket.

The Armenian store carries these bottled drinks which have basil seeds in them.  We use basil seeds in a drink we call faluda, which is made with rose syrup and milk.  I have been wanting to try this drink because it has the basil seeds in it, so I bought two bottles (one for me, one for daughter).  A bit of an indulgence at $.99 each, but worth a try.  They had other flavors, too, including mango, peach, lychee, and pomegranate.  But I thought the passion fruit flavor would be good for a first try:

Passion Fruit Flavored Basil Seed Drink

At the Armenian Store, I bought:
2+ lb. chicken drumsticks @ $.69/lb = $1.56
1 packet raw whole cashews @ $8.99/lb = $3.69
1 lb. bag carrots = $.39
Broccoli crown @$.49/lb = $.36
1 cucumber = $.50
Zucchini @$.39/lb = $.37
Okra @$.99/lb = $.37
Peaches @ $.69/lb = $.61
Bananas @ $.49/lb = $.59
Grapes @ $1.19/lb = $1.90
2 Basil seed passion fruit flavored drinks @ $.99 + $.05 deposit = $2.08
Total = $12.42

Fresh Produce
At the regular supermarket, I bought:
1 package (6 count) bagels = $1.99
1 loaf multi-grain bread = $1.99
1 flavored coffee creamer = $2.69
1/2 gal. milk = $1.99
Cherries @ $1.47/lb = $3.51
Green beans @ $.99/lb = $.64
2 packages (@ 8 oz) ham cold cuts @ $.99 = $1.98 (discounted because sell by date is 7/11)
Total = $14.79

(I also bought 4 cans of cat food for Dancer, which is not part of my grocery budget)

After I came home, I realized that I had forgotten to write down lettuce on my grocery list and, therefore, hadn't bought any!  Oops!

Total spent on groceries = $12.42 + $14.79 = $27.21

July Week 1 Groceries: Receipts

In June, I went over budget by $3.78  (I am not including that variety cake I had bought in my grocery budget; it was covered from my Miscellaneous account!).

In July, my daughter will be here for 5 days this week and another 9 days later in July.  Therefore, I am increasing my grocery budget by $25 to make it $100.

July Grocery Budget = $100 - $3.78 over spent in June = $96.22
Spent to date = $27.21
Balance left in July grocery budget = $96.22 - $27.21 = $69.01

I plan to make a curry with the drumsticks, I bought.  Daughter doesn't like okra, so I bought just enough for myself for a couple of meals.  She won't be home for lunches when she comes down this week, but she can take bagels or cold cuts sandwiches with her, if she likes and there will be rice and curries for dinner once she comes home from the Anime Exposition in the night.  I will be taking a ham cold cuts sandwich for my lunch, tomorrow.

In addition, there is smoked sausage and fish in the freezer, as well as some cooked ground beef and another cooked chicken breast half.  I can see myself making a stir-fry with the smoked sausage, some curry puffs with the ground beef, and making the fish for dinner, one night, when daughter is here.  It's not meal planning, exactly, but just listing options works for me!

Have you gone grocery shopping for July, yet?

  1. I've done my big shop for the month, from a local supermarket which I order online and have delivered. I've cooked up some meals and frozen them in portions so am set up for the next few weeks. All I need to do for the rest of the month is a couple of top up shops for fresh fruit and veg. I have a dairy allergy so don't need to worry about fresh milk and only have some in the house if I'm expecting visitors, and I don't eat much bread so I keep a small supply in the freezer and just take out what I need that day.

    1. Sounds like you are well organized for the month ahead, Eileen. Well done on cooking ahead and freezing! A great time saver!

  2. Except for a couple of things, everything on your list is cheaper than we can get it here. Actually, I don't know about the basil seed milk because I've never heard of it.

    1. Most of the items I bought were this week's specials. The cucumber, broccoli, and zucchini were all $1 or higher at the regular grocery store. The green beans were the same price at both stores, but the ones at the Armenian store didn't look too good, so I didn't buy them, there. The bananas were $.10 more at the supermarket. The cherries were a little cheaper at a different grocery store, but I hadn't planned on going there, so decided to buy them at the supermarket. Sometimes, they go on sale for $.99/lb., and that's usually when I buy them, but daughter loves cherries and since she's coming down this week, I went ahead and splurged, a bit. :)

I tried the basil seed drink, yesterday, and it was good, but not as good as when made with fresh fruit juice. The next time I go to the Sri Lankan store, I need to buy a package of the basil seeds.

    2. I do almost all of my shopping at Aldi's which has great prices, especially compared to the regular grocery stores. Your prices even beat those. Looks like you did some good shopping for the best prices.

    3. There isn't an Aldi's in my neighborhood; the nearest one is some 30 miles away, and I will not drive 30 miles to grocery shop (unless it was a specialty store, in which case, I just might). The grocery ads came out, today, and the Armenian store is selling cherries for $.99/lb! Oh, well, I might buy some on Sunday, to send home with daughter.

  3. As you know, I have already done my first grocery shop for July. I spent $125 which is more than your monthly budget for two people. My diet does account for most of the high cost, but I could make some savings IF I bought less dairy. I don't "meal plan" either; but like you, I have in mind some options for how I will use what I buy. I love the prices you pay at the green grocers (Armenian store). As Ontario fresh produce becomes available, our prices will drop significantly.

    1. When daughter was living at home, I budged $150 for the two of us. That was 4 years ago, so, if she moves down again, then, I might have to increase the budget to at least $150 or more, since prices have gone up.

You need to buy what you do, Susan, because you are on a special diet. I should cut down on my starches, myself, but I'd have a hard time doing that!

    1. Yes, pomegranates are one of the best fruits around, aren't they? Unfortunately, the basil seed drink is not made with 100% fruit juice. For that, I'd have to buy the fresh fruit or a bottle of the 100% juice. I think you've given me enough reasons to buy some, though! :)

  5. Great as always, Bless! The produce prices you find at the Armenian store are really something. I've been grocery shopping but have been quite lax about the budget this whole year, really, as my final months of grad school have been hectic. I'm looking forward to feeling a bit more balanced once I graduate in July.

    1. Thank you, Laura. The Armenian store has spoilt me for produce prices, that's for sure! Although the Hispanic stores are equally good! I just don't frequent them, as much as I used to.

You have a perfectly valid reason for not trying to hunt the best bargain when it comes to groceries. Just do what you can to get through this time-crunched period!
