Saturday: Day 3

Today's outfit was inspired by a Pokemon named Espeon, who has lilac fur, a forked tail, tufted ears, and a red jewel on its forehead:

Day 3 Costume
She bought the dress using a gift card she received for Christmas (she will wear it as a regular dress, as well) and made the ears out of an empty cereal box and hot glued them to a hair band that came in a package of 5 from the dollar store.  She did buy the fabric to make the tail, which I sewed for her and attached to the dress with a few stitches (I will remove the stitches and tail, so she can wear the dress at other times).  It is another very low cost costume.

We "slept in" a bit, today, and woke up at 8:30 a.m.  However, we didn't leave the house till after 10:00 a.m.  This time, I drove her to the convention center, itself.

The Convention Center
I took a couple of pictures of the convention center and some of the attendees while I was at a stop light, waiting for people to cross the street.

Anime Expo Attendees

It was already hot (in the 90s) when we left in the morning!  On my way back, I put gas to the car ($3.45/gal; I put $40 worth of gas), went to the bank, went to the pharmacy, and did some grocery shopping at the dollar store (I will do a separate on that).  It was 106F outside, when I came home just before noon.  But, only 86F inside the house; a 20 degree difference!

86F at noon (inside the house)

I ate a banana and made some tuna salad and ate that on crackers for lunch.  Later, I snacked on grapes and then, I had a little ice cream.  By that time, it was getting hotter inside the house:

92F

When it is 90+F inside the house, it is time for a little ice cream!  I was also drinking plenty of ice water, as well.

After that, I took a nap!

In the evening, around 7:30 p.m., I watered the front garden.  It was getting cooler, by then, so it was pleasant.  It was still hot inside the house, however, as it takes a while to cool down (I can't open all the windows and the sliding glass door to help cool out the house faster, because I don't have screens on most of them and I don't want Dancer to go outside through open doors and windows; fixing screens is yet another thing on my to do list that I haven't got around to doing!)

Scorched Grape Vine

My poor grape vine didn't fare too well in the heat!

I took a shower to cool off after I came inside and then, did a load of laundry.  Friend F called and I chatted to her for a bit; she mostly called to ask for a ride to the monthly prayer gathering, next weekend.  She doesn't drive on the freeway, so she will drive to my house and go with me.

Daughter texted a little after 10:00 p.m. to say she was heading to the shuttle pick up area.  She got to the hotel a little before I did, but she was able to wait inside the lobby until I got there.  We chatted for awhile and she showed me the pictures she took, etc.  Then, she headed off to bed as she was very tired.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter had another wonderful day at the Anime Expo
- Safe drives to and from
- An afternoon nap
- I didn't lose power at my house (several thousand households were without power, today)
- Cooler temperatures in the evening.

It is 2:30 a.m. now and the house has cooled down to...86F, again!  Time to close up the windows and get ready for bed.

How was your Saturday?  Is it a bit cooler where you are or is it as hot?

  1. It's midway through Sunday morning and currently only 78F with a bit of a breeze, do nowhere near as hot as yours. I'm hoping it doesn't get any hotter as the band is playing in church later this afternoon and it will be a bit if an ordeal if it gets too hot.

I like your daughter's costume. The dress and colour suit her.

    1. Eileen, I hope it doesn't get too hot by afternoon so the band will be comfortable when they play. Stay cool and hydrated!

  2. I definitely understand why you aren't showing us your daughter's face. I do the same thing. But she looks so cute, I'd like to see her face to complete the picture.

    1. Thanks, Live and Learn. Imagine a little round face with glasses. :)

  3. Just curious, but what do the attendees DO at the convention centre all day? They cannot just be milling about on their feet every day for four days. Are they listening to lectures? Watching movies? Twelve hours is a very long day no matter what you're doing.

You ran a lot of errands before noon. Good thing you ran them in the "cooler" hours of the day. *laugh* I think it is warm enough to have your a/c installed this summer. Will your neighbour do that for you automatically, or will you need to ask him? It was good that you had an afternoon nap. The heat has that effect on people. I am relieved you didn't lose your power, but feel sorry for all those people who did.

    1. Susan, according to my daughter, they attend discussion panels (various anime-related topics e.g., cosplay for people of color, behind the scenes of various shows and video games; how they do voice-overs); attend various watch world premiers of some anime movies (apparently, a very big deal), workshops (e.g. pattern-making for cosplay, how to make various props), go to concerts and performances, dance workshops and competitions (daughter participated in a couple of dance workshop which were recorded), participate in interviews (daughter will be featured in one that will be YouTube), visit galleries of art work, shop for anime-related items such as manga books, DVDs, cosplay and other outfits (such as ponchos, sweatshirts, kimonos, etc.), stuffed toys known as plushies, figurines, jewelry and accessories, posters/wall scrolls. The entire exhibit hall (a huge space) is a shopping mall with individual booths. There are also lounges where you can play video games including virtual reality games demos (which daughter loved), watch anime movies, and read manga books. There are also karaoke singing as well as various comepetitions (costume/dance/talent/singing, etc.) Daughter also met up with some friends and went to lunch and dinner with them. And, yes, people do mill around and take pictures and have their pictures taken. :) So, as you can see, lots to do!

  4. Her costume is adorable. The dress looks really good on her, so bonus that she will get extra wear. I love that she is creative with her looks and willing to recycle items to make parts of her look.
Our house only had screens on the upstairs back windows. I need to make some for some of the front facing windows to get a cross breeze. I am not worried about our dog getting out, but can't tolerate the number of bugs (especially mosquitos) that would come in.

    1. Thank you, Anne. She'll get plenty of wear from the dress - as is for the summer, with a cardigan to the office, with a long sleeved T-shirt or turtleneck and leggings when it gets cooler.

The window screens are important to keep the insects out, here, too. Not too many mosquitos, but lots of flies, etc.

  5. Well it's not 106 so it's cooler here, but it is in the 80s and we are very unused to such heat and don't cope well with it. Very few houses have air con and not that many shops, public buildings either. Sounds like your daughter is having a great time.

    1. Temperatures in the 80s can feel very hot and uncomfortable, especially if it is humid and one is not used to it. I hope you are taking it easy during your heatwave. Hope it cools down soon for you.

  6. That is a very pretty dress, I like the swingy skirt. Such a cute costume.
Sorry your grapevine looks so sad. I wonder if it will pick up eventually.
I think we are getting used to the heat. It was about 94 at least today and I didn't feel I had to hide in the house. I must admit I find a nap seems to be very welcome though.
I counted 19 Monarch caterpillars in the yard the other day. Today I wasn't seriously counting but I easily found 10 just by looking from the side step while fetching in the laundry. One plant had 3 on it!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. It is a cute little dress, isn't it?

I am hoping the grapevine will pick up. I will continue to water it and see what happens.

I am afraid we will all have to get used to unusually warm summers from now on due to climate change. We had record breaking heat, again, today, although it was a little cooler than yesterday.

Your garden is going to be beautiful when all those caterpillars transform themselves into Monarch butterflies, before they leave on their migration south. I'm so glad you are growing the milkweed plants they prefer for their caterpillars.

  7. Oh my goodness, 90+F in the house?! I would be very miserable, as I was when we lost power during the hurricane last year. I don't think our indoor temperatures even reached 90F indoors then and I was already miserable, lol.

I hope it cools off for you soon!

Another great and frugal costume for your Daughter. She really put some thought into this convention, didn't she?

    1. I am usually OK with the heat until it gets to 90F inside the house. It's then that I feel it's too hot to do anything! Of course, it is not quite as humid here, as it is in Florida, so that makes a difference, too, I think.

My daughter only decided on her costumes 2 weeks or so prior to the event, this year. In previous years, she and her friends would get together several weeks in advance and sew their costumes. But, yes, she tries to be frugal with the costumes. Plus, she says that it feels more rewarding when someone compliments her on an outfit she put together rather than one that was bought. :)
