Friday Fun

Pastries and Cakes from a Favorite Cuban Bakery/Cafe

Today, Friday, was daughter's day off (she works an alternate schedule with every other Friday of), although her supervisor called her with a work-related question, anyway.

After a fairly relaxed morning (I did do a load of laundry), we went shopping for a new pair of walking shoes for me.  We went to the same shoe store my daughter's podiatrist had recommended she went to get fitted for her walking shoes, where they scan you feet and have you try on shoes based on what the scan  revealed.  Recently, I've been experiencing pain in my right big toe when I walk in the shoes I currently own.   I am hoping that a pair of better fitting new shoes will make walking pain-free.

Halloween Decorations at the Store

The store was decorated for Halloween.  I especially liked the witches' hats and candles handing from the ceiling:

Close Up: the candles were glowing as if lit

Apparently, I've been wearing the wrong size shoe and needed to go up half a shoe size!  Who knew?  I tried on four pairs of shoes and finally selected a pair that felt most comfortable for me.  They are definitely the most expensive pair of shoes I've ever owned, but, daughter bought them for me as an early birthday gift.  Thank you, daughter.

Afterwards, we stopped by a popular Cuban bakery/cafe that we both love and daughter bought us some treats:

Chicken Empanadas, Meat Pie, Potato Balls
(which have a meat filling)

Guava Strudels and Cream Cheese Rolls

Cakes: Guava Rose (top*)
Parisian Chocolate Cake Slice and
Opera Cake Slice (mocha)

* A percentage of the price of guava rose cakes sold during the month of October goes to breast cancer treatment and services through one of the health care networks in the state, according to a notice at the bakery/cafe

We enjoyed the pastries for both lunch and dinner; there are more of the guava strudels, cheese rolls, and cake left for tomorrow.

Later in the evening, M arrived to tend to the garden.  He bought us several bags of potting soil for the raised bed that my daughter had bought and assembled.  Daughter and M planted part of a packet of arugula seeds in one half of the raised bed and she wants to grow some other vegetables in the other half (M has been asked to buy the vegetable seeds from a particular nursery from where he buys his seeds and seedlings).  In the meantime, I have tomato seedlings popping up all over the garden from when I tossed some spoiled Berkeley Tie Dye tomatoes!  M dug up two of the seedlings and potted them up as they were growing where we planned to put the raised bed.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A lovely, warm, sunny day (high of 91F)
- New shoes
- Treats from the bakery/cafe
- M's help with the garden
- More okra from the garden

Today's joyful activity was selecting pastries and cakes from the bakery/cafe and enjoying them, of course!

We had some tentative plans for the weekend, including a visit from one of daughter's friends, but, her friend called to cancel as she had something else she needed to do.  So, we will probably relax and take it easy and I might do a little crafting and house cleaning (kitchen floor could do with a good mopping).

How was your Friday?  Any plans for the weekend?

  1. As we age, I think our feet change, and properly fitting shoes are important. I have been assessing mine footwear and recently bought a new pair of well, fitting "smart" shoes. I am so pleased with them. And my feet feel better too.

    1. I hope my feet don't change too much in the future! I am hoping that this pair of shoes will last me a long time. I'm glad you bought yourself a new pair of well fitting "smart" shoes. :)

  2. Sounds like a great day! Good shoes are expensive, but very important. It must have been hard to do your walking goals when your feet hurt.
Good thing that Cuban bakery is not close to me. The pastries look delicious.

    1. Thank you, June; yes, it was a very good day. The shoes were expensive to me. I usually budget $120 per year for clothing and shoes, and this pair of shoes cost nearly one and a half year's clothing budget! I walked in them for 20 minutes and my feet didn't hurt, so, I'm hopeful that they will help with the walking goals I've set for myself.
The pastries are delicious! They have sandwiches and soups, etc., too, but, I prefer the pastries.

  3. The candles and witches hats in the store are cleverly placed.
I'm glad I had a good portion of pancakes for breakfast or I would be drooling at the sight of your haul from the bakery! They all look delicious.

    1. I really liked the "floating" candles and hats. :)
The pastries were delicious. I wanted 4 meat pies, but, they only had 1 left!

  4. Good quality shoes that fit well really make a big difference. I hope your new shoes last a long time and keep feeling good. The pastries look delicious! How nice that the store makes a donation to breast cancer treatment. Good reason to eat more of those!

    1. Thank you, Celie. I wore the shoes and walked for 20 minutes today with no foot pain. :) The pastries are delicious. I was pleased to see that the store makes a donation to breast cancer treatment bases on the sale of that one particular cake during October.

  7. Glad the shoes are working, and helping you to exercise regularly. I have intermittent pain in my instep and was wondering why, but I fell a couple of times recently so I think I may have strained something. Ho hum.

    1. Oh, no! I'm so sorry you fell! I hope you didn't hurt yourself. Maybe try an insole to help with the pain? The new shoes are working out well for me. The store assistant did suggest an insole might also help, but, for now, the shoe alone is sufficient.

  9. Well well - This is my kind of post. Just look at all that yummy goodness.
You've got quite a variety there with the savory pastries, sweet pastries and fancy cakes.
If I was your neighbor I would hope to be invited over for a pastry, some tea (maybe I would try it your way with the cream you use) and a bit of crocheting.
We wouldn't laugh too loudly as we talked so as not to disrupt your daughter's work.

    1. Glad you enjoyed seeing all the pastries and cakes, Debra. If you were my neighbor, I would have definitely invited you to try a pastry or two and have a cup of tea and do a bit of crocheting. Wouldn't that be fun? If we arrange to do that on a weekend, daughter wouldn't have to work and we could talk and laugh as loudly as we pleased.😊
