Replenishing the Stash!

Guess What's in the Box!

A box was delivered the other day...what could be inside?

Here's a peek inside:

Goodies!

Oh, my!

Yarn, Replacement Rotary Cutter Blades, Embroidery Thread

I have used up most of my yarn stash - I have a few balls of novelty yarn and some odds and ends of wool and acrylic yarn left, but, not enough to make any of the things I want to make!  In the meantime, my daughter's friend V is expecting her first baby (a girl) in June, my cousin's daughter is expecting her first baby (a boy) in September, and one of my friends has been hinting that another pair of knitted socks will be very welcome!  I usually make neutral colored baby blankets - lemon yellow or mint, for example, but, all the yellow yarn was sold out and mint looks more blue than mint, but, it will work.  I ordered some blue 100% wool yarn, too, for a sweater for me, but, so far, it has not been shipped!  I'll probably need to call about it, because the tracking information simply says it's waiting to be shipped.

Even without the wool, my yarn bin is quite full, again, and my stash has been replenished!  But, the difference is, this time, I bought the yarn with projects in mind and not simply because it was on sale!  I am looking forward to some knitting and crocheting in the evenings when I watch the news, etc.

The black and pink embroidery thread is to replace the embroidery thread that I used up and the replacement blades for my rotary cutter are much needed because the blade on my rotary cutter is too blunt to cut anything!

Do you have a yarn stash?  Do you buy yarn simply because it is on sale, knowing you can always find something to make with it?  Or, do you buy yarn because you have a project you want to make?

  1. Well done. I tend to buy yarn without a project in mind. I have 2 drawers full of he stuff and no projects in mind.

    1. That's what I used to do, too, Anne! Whenever there was a good sale on yarn, I'd buy a whole bunch to have on hand! I knew I could always make something - sweaters or scarves or blankets - as long as I had the yarn! Maybe time to start knitting or crocheting scarves or blankets to give as Christmas gifts?

  2. Apart from my Weather Scarf, for which I bought the yarn specifically, I don't think I've bought any yarn since 2016 when Rosie was a baby - I just keep knitting the stuff in my stash. And that is mostly yarn other people have given me when they are decluttering!

    1. Lucky you to receive yarn that others are decluttering! :)

  3. I don't knit or sew anymore as my eyesight is poor but I do have a box full of wool ready to be decluttered to the charity shop.

    1. Sorry to hear that you have had to give up knitting and sewing due to poor eyesight, Eileen. But, your donation of wool will be appreciated, I'm sure, especially as wool is so expensive these days.

  4. I don't have a yarn stash. I don't knit or crochet and whenever I've had a funny five minutes and attempted it, I end up passing everything to my sister when I finally admit defeat!

I like the colours you've chosen, especially the pink!

    1. Ha, ha, good for you, having no yarn stash to maintain! I thought the pink would be a softer pink, but, it isn't! But, it will knit up nicely, I'm sure. :)

  5. I didn't realize that you had used up most of your yarn. When I last remember you talking about it, you had quite a stash. Good for you. You'll have fun with that new box.

    1. Yes, I used up most of the yarn stash when I made the granny square blankets, last year. :) All the yarn I have left from that stash fit into two 1-gallon sized ziplock type bags with room to spare (sorted by type - all the wool in one bag, the novelty yarn and acrylic in one). I'm looking forward to getting started with the new yarn. :)

  6. Here's another post that needs a warning - yarn photos. They had me yearning to go out and buy yarn but I still have some to use up and two UFPs on the go! I'm sure you can't wait to get started on your new projects. Have fun.

    1. Ha, ha, yes, indeed; "yarn warning"! I thought long and hard about ordering more yarn, but, I have been missing having something to do while I watch TV in the evenings. :)

  7. I can't imagine not having an overflowing yarn stash. I can't imagine very getting to the end of mine! I buy yarn when I'm upset, or need distracting, or should be doing something else, or see a bargain, or get caught by pretty colours...

    1. I worked hard to get the yarn stash under control, Lyssa. I put myself on a yarn diet! I didn't allow myself to buy any more yarn unless I needed it for a specific project or to finish something I've already started. I'm doing the same with fabric, too! I'm sewing from the stash and will buy only if I need it to finish a project.

  8. I think you're a very special person who had let her stash go near to empty!! I'm sad to say I have so much yarn I could be squashed by it! I love the colours you've bought especially the aqua colour. Happy knitting!

    1. Thank you, Chris. It took me a couple of years to get through the stash, but, I did it! :D

  9. Hi Bless,
I tried to comment the other day, but it apparently is somewhere in hyperspace! I’m so glad you and your daughter had the extended time together you did. I’m hopeful that in years to come people will look back on this time and find something positive to have come out of it.

I recently discovered a Sri Lanken restaurant has opened near me. I looked at the menu and recognized many of the dishes you’ve talked about preparing and eating. I was wondering if you could recommend something to try first. I love Indian and Thai foods along with Vietnamese.

    Thanks

    1. Hi, Chris,
If you meant your comment about the yarn, I just published it. I don't always get to all the comments as quickly as I'd like. If it was a different comment, then, I'm sorry it went astray!

Spending the extended time with my daughter was definitely one of the positive things to come from this time of Covid! :)

How exciting to find a Sri Lankan restaurant in your area! You couldn't go wrong with rice and chicken curry with any of the vegetable sides they may offer, such as dhal curry (lentils), green beans, etc. If they have stringhoppers/indiappam (a type of rice noodles), that's one of my favorites - it will probably be accompanied by a coconut milk gravy/sauce and chicken or meat curry. If they offer coconut flat bread "pol roti" or "pittu" (which is made with steamed flour mixed with coconut), that's delicious, too. Both roti and pittu will need some kind of curry to go with it. I hope you enjoy it, if you do try it. :)

    2. Thanks, Bless … the previous Chris is someone else. When I get a chance to try the restaurant, I’ll let you know.

    3. Oops! So sorry about that! I should have seen the "M" after your name! If you have a chance, send me a list of what dishes they are offering at the restaurant and I can tell you which ones I might order. :)

  10. Fun! What a great package of goodies. And, like you said, you have plans for your new yarn so it won't languish for years (like mine does - well, like mine did - because I donated most of it to the Senior Center :)
Good for working through your existing stash!
I look forward to seeing the new things you make.

Yes I do have a yarn stash but it is so much smaller than it used to be. I used to have a book case filled with plastic tubs filled with yarn. Personally I feel a yarn stash is an individual thing. If you are happy with the amount of yarn/crafting supplies you have then that is great. It's each person's call. I was not happy with what I had.
It bothered me. I did not want to own yarn just to store it in plastic bins. (Or "clutter coffins" - a term I heard on a podcast the other day lol) So I sold quite a bit on Ravelry and I donated a lot to the Senior Center.
Now I have one medium sized tub of the acrylics I use for my baby blanket donations and a small plastic tub of some nicer natural fiber yarns.
That amount pleases me and that amount works with how I knit/crochet and the things I make.

I need some yellow too! lol

    1. Thank you, Debra. And the good news is, I just received the rest of my yarn order, this afternoon, so I am very happy!

I really like how you dealt with your yarn stash! Selling some of it, donating some of it, and keeping just what you want for your immediate projects. :) Yes, a stash is an individual thing and it's always good to have enough on hand, especially if they were bought on sale, to make something when the mood strikes. My yarn bin is now full, again, and I will not buy more until I have finished the projects I'm planning to make. :)

  11. Ack I wish I had known you were replenishing! I have a whole bunch I am going to get rid of. I hate to let it go but it isn't being used and my craft room is a horrible mess and something has to go! I hope you show us what you make!

    1. If I lived closer, I'd come and take the extra yarn off your hands, Sharon. But, doesn't your MIL knit? Maybe she can make use of some of your yarn? Donate the rest to a church or senior citizen center?

  12. Oh ... yes I do have a yarn stash! And the oddments collection keeps growing. I have just used up three balls of yarn that have been hanging around for ages, on a scarf for the refugee collection. (I'm quite pleased with it, considering I'm no knitter!) Now I am wondering whether to make some sort of baby blanket using some of my larger oddments, or whether it would just look too messy. On the other hand, it is nice to have some oddments in various lengths, for smaller crochet projects - e.g. hats and scarves for the snowmen I made a while back...

    1. Sounds like you are making good use of your yarn stash, Lady Ella. A baby blanket made with some of the larger oddments will be quite lovely, I'm sure, depending on the colors used and pattern. Granny squares are one of my favorite things to make with small amounts of yarn. :)

  13. I might just have a few half used balls of wool hanging around :) but I'm not sure that counts as a stash. How wonderful to have a new baby to knit for. X

    1. Leftover half-used yarn doesn't really count as a stash! :D
