My eye doctor's appointment on Monday went very well. Cousin N got to my house by 11:00 a.m. and we left soon after that. We went in my car, with me driving us to the clinic and cousin N driving us home, afterwards. My appointment wasn't until 12:40 p.m., but I had been asked to arrive 10 minutes before that, and I wasn't sure how congested the freeways (I had to take two freeways) and the surface roads might be, so thought it best to leave early. We got there shortly after 12 noon, much earlier than I had anticipated. I thought we might have to wait, but the technician was very pleased that I was early, because it gave her plenty of time to perform the peripheral field vision test and other preliminary tests in good time before the actual doctor's appointment. Everything was pronounced to be fine - good eye pressure, no retinal damage due to diabetes, the cataracts are negligible, and the peripheral vision was good! Yay! I am to return in 1 year and we made the appointment before I left. My copay was $20 and parking cost $14 (higher parking rates at this clinic because it was located in Beverly Hills).
As my cousin drove us home, we passed by the Petersen Automotive Museum with its distinctive appearance, and I was able to take a couple of photos to share.

We got home shortly after 2:00 p.m. I offered N some lunch, but she declined. She also didn't want to take her birthday card, because, her mother, Aunt C, had told her not to accept anything until they can both come with their Christmas gifts (no, we haven't exchanged our Christmas gifts, yet!). I told cousin N that it was just her belated birthday card, not a Christmas gift, but she called Aunt C and was told to leave it until they could both visit! So, I just gave her the fish curry I had cooked and two jars of jam (a jar of strawberry jam and a jar of apple/cranberry jam). She asked Aunt C about them, too, and was told that it was OK to bring the food! LOL! Apparently they will come to visit and exchange gifts, next week! I am to prepare a nice meal, I was told, by my aunt! LOL! She is so funny!
Cousin N looked around the house, when she was here, today, and told me that the house is looking nice! It made me feel very happy. Not that she would have said anything if it had been messy! In fact, she has seen it messy, many times, and when I was undergoing chemo and didn't have the energy to clean, she used to sweep the house for me. But, it made me happy that she noticed my recent efforts at keeping it maintained.
I had my lunch (red rice, fish curry, green beans curry) after cousin N left and then, took a nap on the family room sofa, since I needed to rest my eyes (it was darker in the family room). Later, I took the trash cans out to the curb, helped neighbor T with her trash, and handed her the emergency contact information she had requested from me. Then, I did dishes and made a batch of yogurt - at least, I boiled the milk, added the last bit of yogurt from the container I bought, as the starter, and put it in the prewarmed oven to set, overnight. I might warm up the oven, once more, before I go to sleep, to make sure the yogurt has a warm enough place in which to set.
I called cousin R, in the evening, to check on her mother, Aunt T. Aunt T fell on the Sunday after cousin P's surprise party and had to be hospitalized for a few days. She is now recovering in a nursing home. I plan to visit her one day, this week; I'll ask cousin P if she'd like to go with me.
Today, I am grateful for:
- Good results from the eye examination
- Cousin N making herself available to drive me back
- Cousin saying the house looked nice
- Another afternoon nap
- Daughter helping me with paying a bill online
Today's joyful activities included spending time with cousin and playing the piano in the evening. I even croaked out a song or two as I played! LOL!

Great news about the eye appointment! Sounds like you had a really busy day.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sharon; it was very good news about the eyes. It wasn't too busy a day, but I got a few things accomplished.
DeleteWonderful news on your eye exam! And, look at you go ... you had a very productive day even with being away from home a portion of the day. Your cousin and aunt are too funny ... the dialogue you relayed regarding whether or not to take the items was hilarious! They make quite a comical duo. And so sweet of your cousin to comment on your home. You’ve worked hard and it’s evident to others!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Carolyn. I am so happy with the eye exam results. :) My cousin and her mother do make a comical duo! My daughter and I are often in stitches when we listen to them interact. But, both have hearts of gold and have been there for me and my daughter when we needed them.
DeleteGood news about your eyes, although seeing that building was enough to distort your vision!
ReplyDeleteYou mention quite a few of your cousins ... do you all live fairly close to each other? Hope your enjoy your belated exchange of Christmas gifts ... the longest I had to wait for one was two years!
Thank you, Eileen; very good news, isn't it? That building is quite eye catching, wouldn't you say?
DeleteYes, I have several cousins living fairly close to me, with cousin P living across the street, just one house down the block. I'm sure we'll enjoy our belated Christmas gifts. I shall probably add a spring gift, or two, as well. :)
Is aunt T’s nursing home close by? If so, please visit her often. Remember, I’m a CNA, and I generally believe nursing homes are horrible. I work helping people in their own homes, though.
ReplyDeleteNursing homes tend to have 90-95% CNA’s who are terrible, and 5-10% who are good- but the good ones get pushed out by the bad ones creating hostile work environments for them when they start reporting stuff. I hope she recovered soon
Thank you, Akasha; yes, many nursing homes leave a lot to be desired, don't they? Aunt's nursing home is not that far from me and is very close to where her daughters live. Aunt had a live-in caregiver, but, after this latest fall, it was discovered that the caregiver had been giving aunt the wrong medications/dosages! According to my cousin, the stay at this particular nursing home is a temporary thing, until aunt recovers from her fall. I'm not sure what they plan to do for longer term care. I have my opinions, but I shall refrain from voicing them!
DeleteOh nooooo. CNA’s/home caregivers are not allowed to give medications. We can give from those weekly planners, but not directly from the bottle unless it’s OTC. A family member or an RN has to do it once a week, for whenever the pill box will hold. Eek that’s a liability.
DeleteThanks, Akasha. That's good to know! I don't know if my cousins knew that; I certainly didn't. But, one cousin has a daughter who is an RN and her other daughter is a pharmacist, so, I suppose they were aware of the do's and don'ts?
DeleteYou have some fantastic modern architectural buildings where you live. I have seen some great examples in photos you have shared. Not only buildings, but I have seen some wonderful architectural gardens.
ReplyDeleteWell, that is the second compliment you have received on your home in recent history. You must be doing a great job maintaining your space. All that cleaning and organising has paid off. All that purging just shows me that I need to do the same. Less is definitely MORE.
There are certainly some interesting looking buildings in this city! And lovely gardens.
DeleteI was so happy when my cousin commented on the state of my house, Susan. I know that we should keep our homes to our level of satisfaction, not to what others think, but, my house hasn't been kept to my own level of satisfaction for some time! I think that keeping the horizontal surfaces cleared for the most part is helping! :)
That's great news, Bless. Yesterday I did some laundry, online banking, and work on my pension requirements. Today I watered the front garden, washed my sheets and towels, and made a batch of Mexican rice and chicken broth. I plan to knit this afternoon. That must have felt wonderful that your cousin noticed how well you are keeping house. It really makes a difference in the vibe.
ReplyDeleteYou have had a couple of productive days, Stephenie. We are getting to the point where we need to start watering our gardens, aren't we? It did feel good to have the house "company ready" so to speak. For the first time, in a long time, I wasn't apologizing or asking someone to ignore the state of the house!
DeleteI'm glad it was good news, and thank you for sharing a pic of that amazing building! Aunt C sounds a bit of a character.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lyssa. The building was originally a department store and was remodeled in 2015. The metal ribbons remind me a bit of the movement of the air stream as a vehicle moves through it, although, I am not sure if that's what it is supposed to represent.
DeleteThat's great news about your eye exam, Bless.
ReplyDeleteHehee your aunt is adorably funny. :)
Thank you, Nil. I was very relieved and glad to hear the eye exam results.
DeleteYes, this aunt is quite a character. Strong willed, but, very sweet. :)
