Colorful Monday

Coloring Book and Pencils

Yesterday, two of my cousins and their mother visited me.  One cousin brought me a plate of food (which daughter and I enjoyed for both lunch and dinner) and the other cousin brought me the coloring book and pencils shown above.  Well, of course, daughter and I enjoyed the coloring book, too!

Daughter calls this her "sunset" rose:

I love how vibrant her colors are.

My attempt is a little more pastel:

Pastel Flowers

It has been a relatively quiet day.  I spent most of the day doing office work.  Daughter went back to Berkeley, today (but she'll be back again on Thursday).  Later in the evening, I took the trash cans to the curb, watered the front garden, and washed the dishes that had piled up in the sink.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Daughter had a safe flight back to Berkeley
- Phone calls from cousin
- Emails from a friend
- Pictures to color
- The start of a new month

How was your Monday?  Have you tried coloring, lately?

  1. I'm happy that you had a nice quiet day- those are my personal favorite kind of days! :)
I have always found coloring to be very relaxing. When I was a preschool teacher I had several super-hyper children in my class and I started to have "coloring time" during the day to bring a sense of calm when I needed everyone to wind down a bit. I would put on soft music and we would chat and I would get to know the kids better- it was very nice and some of my sweetest memories. I found the activity just as calming for me, and my students' parents told me they started taking out coloring books at home when needed. I remember buying each child a coloring book and a box of crayons for Christmas and by their gleeful reactions you would have thought I gave them a huge bag of candy! Haha.
I have seen those coloring books that are geared more towards adults and many times I have been tempted to buy one for myself. Usually I just borrow one from one of my kids because they have a stack of them- they used to want one every time we went to the dollar store until I declared "Enough is enough!" :)
I try to use coloring activities at times when I need my kids to settle down a bit and we like the time to be together and chit-chat with each other. Some of our deepest Mother/Son/Daughter conversations have taken place over Mickey Mouse and Strawberry Shortcake coloring pages, crayons in hand! :)
    I hope you have a lovely rest-of-the-week, Bless! :)

    1. Thank you, Dawn. I learned something new today - didn't know you had been a preschool teacher!

I've always enjoyed drawing and coloring, but this is the first time I've had one of these adult coloring books. It is very relaxing and, yes, meditative, too.

  3. I color with my son on occasion. We have somehow lost all the crayons so it's just when we come across one. Sometimes he is interested, sometimes not. I color with the kids at work when we have coloring sheets even though coloring sheets are no longer allowed. Child cares are not supposed to have them because coloring in lines do not allow for free expression. I think it (along with a lot of regulations) is a load of crap. Some kids just aren't artistic and giving them a blank sheet of paper is not fun, but they will color in pictures. I am one of those people.

    1. Sometimes it is nice to draw your own picture and color it. But, it is equally nice to be able to color in a pre-drawn picture. Especially for younger children who might not be able to draw yet. I hope you continue to color with your son. I remember doing a lot of that with my daughter. :)

  4. I like your pictures! I've always like coloring but nowadays I get too distracted by other activities to do it. I did enjoy the coloring "class" that I took with my daughter because we chatted and she showed me the shadowing technique.

I hope you continue to enjoy your coloring activities!
