Friday Hydration

Today, I went for my hydration session, in the morning.  I didn't have a long wait before they called me in.  Pressure was OK, blood test results were good, I had lost another 1 lb.  The hydration went smoothly, as well.

It was 88F when I came home afterwards.  But the house was quite cool.  In fact, I opened a couple of windows hoping to warm up the house a bit!

I worked on office stuff in the afternoon and evening.  I called the office and spoke with a colleague and she sent me some additional documents I needed.

I challenged myself to do a 10-minutes declutter, today!  10 items in 10 minutes!  It took a bit longer, however, because I kept wavering on a couple of the items.  But I managed to find my 10 items:

June 17 Declutterings
- 1 animal print pleated skirt
- 1 matching scarf
- 5 old nightdresses
- 3 bundles of bangles

The skirt, scarf, and bangles will be donated.  The old nightdresses will be tossed.  I was shaking my head at myself about the old nightdresses.  I had sewn myself 4 new nightdresses, last year, to replace them because they were so old and worn (to give an idea of how old they are, one was sewn by my mother and she's been dead 10 years).  Plus I was given a new cotton nightdress and robe set over Christmas.  But, instead of getting rid of the old nightdresses, I stuffed the new ones in the dresser drawer alongside them!  And complained each time I did laundry because the drawer was too full.  I am back to having 5 summer nightdresses.  That should be plenty.  If I need more, I've fabric in the stash to make them.

Today, I am grateful for:

- A safe drive to the clinic and back.
- Hydration went well.
- Blood test results were good.
- Pleasant and helpful staff at the clinic.
- Helpful colleagues.

Today, I spent:
- $15 copay at clinic
- $8 for parking

Hope your Friday was good.  What have you planned for the weekend?

Thursday: Blood Test and June Grocery Shopping Week 2

Thursday, I had a blood test to see how my white blood cell count was, etc.  Results will be made available at Friday's hydration session.

After the blood test, I stopped by the grocery store!  This is the first time I've gone grocery shopping in person since I started chemo therapy in December!

June Week 2 Groceries
I only needed bread, ham cold cuts, and bananas, but I also bought a few extra groceries (it felt so good to just look around and decide to pick up a couple of items just because the were either on sale or I just felt like having it!) and some non-grocery items such as cat food, toiletries, and an air freshener!  I spent a total of $26.39, but the groceries only came to $11.16.

Receipt

Instead of bread, I bought 2 bagels and 4 whole wheat bolillo rolls.

Juice = $2.49
1 can tuna = $1.00
1 individual frozen pizza = $1.29
1 yellow cake mix = $1.00
Bananas, @ $.69/lb = $.80
1/2 lb. ham cold cuts = $2.00
2 bagels, @$.79 = $1.58
4 bolillo rolls @.25 = $1.00
Total = $11.16

Total spent on groceries so far in June = $9.78 + $11.16 = $20.94

I had a bolillo roll sandwiched with some ham cold cuts for brunch, along with a glass of juice.  Normally, passion fruit juice is a favorite, but my taste was slightly off and I didn't enjoy it as much.  The ham sandwich tasted slightly bitter, as well. But I ate it all!

I spent the rest of the morning and most of the afternoon doing office work.  I did manage to sneak in an afternoon nap!  In the evening, I put water to the back garden using the sprinklers and took out the trash.  Then, I did my decluttering for the day:

June 16 Declutterings Part 1
- A jewellery box with a saying about grandmothers that I had bought for my daughter to give to her grandmother.  My mother had kept it, along with its outer box, and two "necklaces" a pre-school daughter had made with beads strung together.

- A CD my daughter had received, which she didn't want, still in its wrapper.

- A bunch of pens/pencils/markers.

- 3 staple removers

- A partial card of sponge animals (drop in water to make them "grow")

- Some scrapbooking items

June 16 Declutterings Part 2
- Craft supplies - mostly packets of beads (11 packets), a packet of feathers, two "necklaces" of strung beads

I am going to count this lot as being 10 items.  The jewellery box, scrapbooking items, and craft supplies will be donated; other items will be tossed.

I had a phone call from one of my aunts and a friend, today, and I called a cousin and left a message.  Plus I've been video chatting with my daughter.

Tomorrow, I have to go in for hydration in the morning and I need to call and schedule my bone density test (forgot to do it today).

Today, I am grateful for:

- More items being decluttered.
- Being able to do my own grocery shopping again!
- An afternoon nap.
- The blood test got done without any problems.
- Sprinklers to help water the garden.

Today, I spent:

$2 for parking at the lab when I went for the blood test
$26.39 at the grocery store for groceries, cat food, toiletries, and household items.
$160.58 for the phone bill (house phone, daughter's cell phone, my cell phone).

How was your Thursday?  What have you planned for tomorrow?

Wednesday's Happenings

I had a rather disturbed night of sleep, last night.  I slept, but kept waking up, practically every hour!  Not a very restful sleep, at all.

Office work kept me busy most of the day.  I did manage a short nap in the afternoon.  But I got my work assignment done and updated my supervisor.

Afterwards, I washed the dishes that had accumulated in the kitchen sink, decluttered a bit, and video chatted with daughter.

June 15 Decluttering
Today's declutterings included:
3 skirts
5 blouses
2 books

Midway through the month, decluttering just 10 items a day, I have already tossed/recycled/set aside for donating a total of 150 items.  Another 150 items to go to meet this month's decluttering goal!

Today, I received the authorization for the referral for a bone density test.  Need to call, tomorrow, to schedule it.  I also received the paperwork to take to my consultation with the radiation oncologist, next week.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Being able to complete my work assignment in good time.
- Medical insurance.
- An afternoon nap.
- Video chatting with daughter.
- Phone calls from a cousin and an aunt.

Plans for tomorrow include going for another blood test.

How was your Wednesday?

Catching Up on Tuesday

I didn't post, yesterday.  Monday wasn't such a good day for me.  I woke up at 6:00 a.m., after going to sleep at 2:00 a.m., and couldn't fall back asleep.  So I got up and checked my office emails, emailed back and forth with my supervisor a bit, did some office work, etc.  But I felt nauseated and not quite up to it.  Finally, I took one of my anti-nausea pills and took an afternoon nap.  Felt better after the nap, but was tired, still.  I was not very productive, yesterday.

Monday's declutterings included 10 more items of clothing:

June 13 Decluttering

I went to sleep fairly early, last night and slept for almost 12 hours!

I feel better, today.  But will continue to take it easy.

Today's decluttering included 5 items of clothing and some other bits and pieces:

/
June 14 Decluttering
5 items of clothing
1 instant camera
1 bag of party supplies (birthday banner, matching candle, party favor bags, table decoration, etc.)
2 play tiaras (count as 1 item)
1 purse
1 packet of markers

These will all be donated.  There were a few other items that were tossed, which I didn't count (2 inflatable beach balls, Halloween costume accessories, etc.)

I now have 8 bags of items set aside to be donated.  Once I have about 20 bags, I will call for a pick up.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Anti-nausea medications
- Afternoon naps
- A good night's sleep
- Being able to work from home around my crazy sleep patterns
- Being able to declutter and share the abundance!

How was your Monday?

Hope you are having a good Tuesday.

Sunless Sunday

Went to sleep after 3:00 a.m., so slept in till 10:00 a.m., Sunday morning.  Another, overcast, "June Gloom" day.  But the morning was spent pleasantly enough, chatting on the phone with a friend, first, and then, my neighbor.

Later, it was time to take my daughter to the airport.  Even when I know I'll be seeing her again in approximately 10 days' time (she'll be coming down to accompany me when I go for the consultation with the radiation oncologist), it's hard to say goodbye.

I felt a bit nauseated in the afternoon, from Friday's chemo session.  But I took a nap and felt better, afterwards.

In the evening, my cousin who lives across the street from me called and came over for a visit.  Later, one of my aunts called.  So, it has been a good day for phone calls and visits, for family and friends.  :)

June 12 Decluttering
I decluttered 10 more items of clothing from my closet.  Once again, the majority of them were items given to me by a relative who was clearing out her closet.  She gave me several bags of clothes and I gratefully accepted them.  Some items have become favorite pieces that I wear all the time.  But others have not been worn at all for one reason or another and it is time for me to release them so they can bless someone else.

On Sunday, I was grateful for:
- Daughter had a safe flight back.
- Phone calls and visits from family and friends.
- Afternoon naps.
- Being able to share the abundance of clothing I've received.
- Relatively mild side effects from the last chemo session.

I didn't spend any money on Sunday.

Monday's To Do List:

- Office work
- Personal paperwork
- Clean the kitchen
- Take the trash cans to the curb
- Water the front garden
- Water the house plants
- Declutter 10 more items

Saturday's Update and June Grocery Shopping Week 1

Oops!  I didn't get around to posting the update for Saturday until now (1:00 a.m. on Sunday morning!)

I never did knit on Saturday afternoon.  Instead, daughter and I went out to run a couple of errands.  I drove, but stayed in the car while she went to the pharmacy to pick up my medication refills and to the grocery store for a few items.  I neglected to take a picture of what she bought, but she bought:

1 container half and half = $1.79
1 loaf of bread = $1.88
bananas @ $.69/lb = $1.07
grapes @ $.99/lb = $2.05

Total = $6.79

Saturday's Grocery Receipt

I have finally been given the OK to eat grapes and other fresh fruits that can't be peeled!  Yay!  I love grapes and I haven't been able to eat them for over 7 months!  The bread is for her to take back with her, so she'll be able to make a sandwich for her lunch for Monday (she won't have time to go grocery shopping when she gets to Berkeley on Sunday evening).

Earlier on Thursday, before she left Berkeley, she bought me a loaf of bread, a multi grain batard, that she wanted me to try:

Thursday's Grocery Receipt
I gave her the money for it and I will add the $2.99 for the bread she bought on Thursday to Saturday's grocery total:

Total spent on groceries so far in June = $6.79 + $2.99 = $9.78

It was 64F and drizzly when we went to do our errands on Saturday afternoon!

On the way home, we picked up some French fries and two soft serve ice cream cones from a fast food place!  Spent $4.59.

Later in the evening, I baked some banana bread with the over-ripe bananas I had left from the last time we bought bananas.  And while I had the oven on, I also baked two of the stuffed potatoes that came with the frozen steaks my supervisor had sent and cooked two of the steaks for our dinner.  I couldn't finish my portion of the steak and potato, so that will be my dinner on Sunday, along with a salad.

Saturday's decluttering was from my closet: 10 items of clothing.

June 11 Decluttering

They are mostly items that were given to me when a relative went through her closet.  I didn't wear them enough, for one reason or another, to continue to keep them.  All will all be donated.

Saturday, I was grateful for:

- Being able to eat grapes, and other fresh fruits which can't be peeled, again!
- A little bit of drizzle.
- Soft serve ice cream cones.
- Phone call from an aunt.
- No co-pay for my medication refills because I've exceeded my deductible for the year!

Saturday's spending log:
$9.78 for groceries
$4.59 for fast food

Well, it is 2:00 a.m. on Sunday.  Time to say my nightly prayers and think about going to bed!

Hope everyone has a lovely Sunday.

Random Thoughts on a Saturday Morning

It was 3:44 a.m. when I last looked at the clock, last night/early this morning, before I fell asleep.  I woke up shortly after 8:30 a.m. (helped by a certain cat who came to see if I was up and ready to give him breakfast).  Stayed in bed until 9:00 a.m.  Then got up and fed the cat and had a cup of tea.  I've been off coffee since I started chemo!

We are having what is called "June Gloom" weather.  It's when the low clouds form over the oceans overnight and move inland bringing fog and overcast cloudy skies, cooler weather, etc.  Usually, the fog burns off and the clouds clear by mid-afternoon.  But it was cold enough for me to turn on the heater when I woke up this morning!

I have now lived in Southern California for 38 years!  My mother, stepfather, and I moved here in early June, 1978.  That's the longest I've lived anywhere!  More than twice as long as I've lived in my country of birth (I left when I was 17).  I traveled around Southeast Asia for a year after I left my country of birth with my parents (mother and stepfather), then, I came to the U.S. to attend university, in Green Bay, Wisconsin!  People often ask me why Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The answer is simple: they gave me a tuition-waiver scholarship!  It was also the only university I applied to!  LOL.  My parents were in the process of emigrating and  I never intended to come to the States on my own!

My parents emigrated to the US while I was at university.  They lived in Wisconsin for a year, found it too cold, and moved to Florida.  I lived in Wisconsin for a total of 6 years, doing both my undergrad and grad studies.  At the end of my undergrad studies, my parents drove up, we packed the car with my belongings, and moved down to Florida. I lived in Florida for 1 year.  Then, we packed the car with whatever belongings would fit, and drove cross-country to California!  It was the ultimate road trip!  It took us 3 days and 2 nights!  And Southern California is where I've stayed since then (except for when I went back to Wisconsin to do my Master's degree), and put down roots.  Why So. Cal.?  We had family and friends living here, they said to come, the weather was good and there were jobs.  So, why not?

Our first apartment in So. Cal. was a studio apartment (under $200/month rent!), furnished with other people's cast offs.  It was a step up from our first apartment in Florida where we had practically no furniture (we slept on the floor on quilts and covered reinforced cardboard boxes with fabric and table cloths to make tables; our landlady felt sorry for us and gave us her extra patio table and chairs which we used as a dining table!)  I still have a small wooden side table I picked up off the sidewalk when I was in the studio apartment.  It was varnished brown, I refinished it once, and then, painted it white several years ago.  I keep it in the hallway and use it as my telephone/answering machine table.

Picked Up Side Table - another item to declutter!

We stayed in the studio apartment until I finished my grad. studies, came back, and got a job.  Then we were able to afford to upgrade to a two bedroom apartment!  $400/mo. rent!  We stayed in that apartment for over 12 years!  Until I bought my house.

It's the first house I looked at! I only looked at it because it was 2 doors down across the street from my cousin's house, it was for sale, they were having an open house, I was visiting my cousin, and she suggested we went and took a look (she loves going to open houses!)  Then, she sort of jokingly said, "You should buy it" and I said, "OK"!  And that was that!  LOL.

The real estate agent did take me to look at a few other houses in the neighborhood, but I was set on this house.  I bought it at the end of December, 1991 and I moved in at the end of the 1st week in January, 92.  I've lived here since then, and my cousin is still across the street.  It's the only home my daughter knew until she went away to grad. school and got her own studio apartment.  I'm still less than 20 miles from the studio apartment where we lived in when we first moved to So. Cal.!

It was a 1,040 square feet, 3 bedroom/1 bathroom house with a detached garage when I bought it.    Later, I added a 2nd bathroom, and a family room with a laundry closet (prior to that, the laundry facilities were in the garage) and remodeled the kitchen.  It is now just around 1,400 square feet.  Just the right size to fill up with all my clutter, um, belongings!  :D

I am making milkrice for brunch, today.  It is rice cooked with milk - a bit like rice pudding, but it isn't sweet.  We eat it with curries or a spicy onion relish or with juggery (palm sugar).  My daughter likes it with regular sugar.

Later...well, I made the milkrice, but when I went to eat it, it wasn't to my taste.  :(     So I ate a piece of bread with some of the meat curry, and daughter ate the milkrice I had served for myself.  I froze the rest of the milkrice and curry for her to take back with her.

I've had a nice chat with one of my aunts who called in response to my text to her daughter to inquire after her health.

It is 1:45 p.m. now and the June Gloom hasn't cleared yet.  The temperature is in the low 70s and both daughter and I are wearing cardigans/sweatshirts.

I am off to spend the afternoon knitting.  I'll be back, later in the evening, to post about my declutterings, gratitude, etc.

Hope you are all having a lovely Saturday.
