Reading and a Book Review

The Latest Book Read

I am hopelessly behind with my reading, this year.  I just haven't been in the mood to read, although I looked through a few magazines I'd borrowed from the library.  However, I checked this book out from the library earlier this year.  It took me a while to read it and I renewed it the maximum number of times I could renew it, but, I found it very interesting.

Here is the synopsis from the back of the book:

Description of the Book and the Author

The author traces the family history of his mother, her sister, their parents, and grandparents in Germany and describes how the family relocated to Holland seeking safety during World War 2 and how they hid with the help of their Dutch friends for the duration of the Nazi occupation of Holland. The author provided a detailed history of the war as it pertained to Holland which I found very interesting.

This Frank family was not related to the other, more well-known Frank family who were also in hiding in Holland at the time, but, they had a lot in common in addition to the same last name.  Both families were German Jews who moved to Holland thinking they'd be safe there, both families had two daughters, both families lived in the same neighborhood in Holland at first although they didn't know each other, both families went into hiding with the help of their Dutch friends.  But, they hid in different cities and they experienced different outcomes.

I found this book to be very interesting.

I returned the book to the library on Monday.

Have you read this book?  If so, did you find it interesting?  If you haven't read it, is it the type of book you might be interested in reading?

  1. This does sound like a book I'd be interested in. However, I'd have to be in the right mood to read about the atrocities of Hitler. Sometimes, the emotions of it all are more than I want. I'll add it to my list. Thanks for the review.

    1. You are welcome, June. There was a lot of history to get through, but, it was all very interesting. I hope you'll find it interesting, too, if you decide to read it.

  3. The book sounds really interesting. I enjoy reading the history of people's lives. A local author wrote about their family history in Holland, "The Occupied Garden" by Tracy Kasaboski, and it is gripping and makes one realize the horror of occupation by a pitiless force.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I have read "The Occupied Garden" after you recommended it to me, a few years ago, I believe. I found it very interesting.

  4. I haven't read it, but the book sounds interesting. I think that it's vital that era isn't forgotten and all the lessons that were learned.

    1. I found it very interesting, Lyssa. I enjoy reading about history and I do believe that we are living through historical times, ourselves. Don't some people say that history repeats itself?

    2. I feel that we are in one of the Big History moments!
They do say that history repeats itself, which isn't reassuring.

    3. Yes, they do say that, don't they? And no, it isn't very reassuring.

  5. I have not read it but it sounds like my kind of book. I went through a long phase of reading endlessly about the war. I think it's SO important. At some point many of the testimonies began to merge into one another, and some were not well written, so i haven't read any for a while but this sounds like a new angle.

    1. I think you'll like this book, Lady Ella. There's a lot of history about life before the war and the lead up to it and, apparently, there were two BBC programs based on the family's experiences well before the book was published.

  6. Sounds like it would be a good book to read. It is not available on my Libby app, but I could go to the library once we get home and check it out.

  7. Well done with finishing the book! I've stopped going to the library - at least for now - as I need to work my way through some of the books in the house so I can get rid of them!

  8. This sounds a really interesting story. I heard the book mentioned briefly on the radio and thought they were Anne's relatives. Thank you for explaining!

    1. At first, when I saw the title of the book, I, too, thought that there would be a connection, that this was a different branch of the other Frank family, but, they were different families. But, I found the story quite interesting.

  9. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about this book. ❤️ Even though they are not related to the well known Frank family such as Otto and his daughters Anne and Margo, I love to read non fiction books, especially from the early 1900s to World War II.
