Sunny Sunday

Smoke from a Fire in the Distance

Sunday was sunny and warm, with an afternoon high of 82F.  I went outside for a short walk (still walking up and down my driveway and in front of the house, as I feel I can do that without a mask; I'd need to wear a mask if I walked around the block).

That's when I noticed the grey smoke from a fire in the distance.  I couldn't see quite where it was coming from, but, the smoke was obvious.  Later in the evening, when I watched the local news, they mentioned a fire in the neighborhood which involved hazardous materials.  They were telling people to stay inside if they could smell the smoke.  Well, the fire had been put out by then and although I had been outside, walking, while it was still burning, fortunately, I couldn't smell the smoke!

I had a fairly productive day on Sunday.  I tidied the kitchen counters, ran the dishwasher, scrubbed the kitchen sink, and did a load of laundry.  I also took the bags of recently decluttered items out to the garage, where I am keeping them until I schedule a pick up.  Then, I checked on the garden and picked the last ripe persimmon and a couple of lemons.

On Sunday, I was grateful for:

- The sunny and warm day
- Working appliances
- Not being able to smell the smoke from the fire
- Phone calls and emails from family and friends
- The garden is showing signs of recovering from the summer scorching

Sunday's joyful activity was being in the garden.

The Lantana Bushes are Flowering Again

Plans for Monday include doing the vacuuming I didn't do on Sunday, a bit of general pick up and tidying, cleaning out the fridge, watering the garden, and taking the trash cans to the curb.

How was your Sunday?  What are your plans for Monday?

    1. Yes, thankfully it was far enough away. I don't think anyone was hurt; it happened at a storage yard. There was a commercial building across from it, but, it was not damaged.
Thank you; the lantana bush does look lovely, doesn't it? I'm glad that you still have some color in your garden; enjoy it while it lasts. :)

  2. That smoke looks pretty close. It's fortunate that you didn't smell anything. There are more blooms on your lantana than I've ever seen on any around here. That may be because it's an annual here and doesn't survive the winter.

    1. Yes, the fire was a few miles away, but, close enough. The lantana bush is several years old and is quite well established, I think. What happened to the plant you overwintered last year? Did it survive?

  3. I heard that the fire was caused by a meth lab exploding in someone's basement, homemade meth is a dangerous project to do out of one's home. The authorities don't want the public to know, because they are afraid of property values going down.

    1. You might have heard some misinformation, Anonymous.
According to the news sources, which gave the address of the property, the fire was at a storage yard, in a commercial area, opposite a commercial building which was not damaged.

  4. I'm glad the smoke didn't get bad enough that it affected your area.
Where was the fire from? A manufacturing business? Just wondering what type of material had been burned to cause the hazardous material warning.
    Another productive day for you.
That lantana is amazing; bouncing back beautifully.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Apparently, the fire was at a storage yard. If there were any type of treated wood or paint or tires, they would have been considered hazardous materials. There was a commercial building across from it that they were worried about, if the fire spread, but, apparently, it was not damaged.
Yes, it was a productive day and the lantana is doing great!
And look at you, all caught up with your blog reading! (I'll reply to the other comments in a minute.)

  5. I'm glad that fire was nowhere near you and it seems the smoke never came your way at all. I love the Lantana bushes.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Yes, I'm glad that the fire was far enough away from me. The lantana bushes are making a nice splash of color in the otherwise rather drab garden. :)

  6. The Lantana bush is beautiful. There isn't a lot of colour remaining in my garden now. And even less since Storm Ashley snapped my last sunflower.
I'm so relieved that you managed to avoid the smoke. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules. I'm sorry the last sunflower was snapped by the storm. I didn't plant any sunflowers, this year.
