Happy Independence Day!

Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July, everyone!  Independence Day here, in the USA.

A certain very hungry kitty woke me up at 6:00 a.m., loudly complaining about the lack of a proper breakfast (he has access to his dry food at all times).  I muttered a few complaints of my own about being woken up after just 3 hours of sleep, but, I got up and gave him a serving of beef pate which is his current favorite (he's been turning up his nose at the other flavors), and went back to bed!

Once I woke up for the second time, a bit later in the morning, I texted my late friend A's daughters, letting them know that I was remembering their mother on what would have been her birthday (we had a running joke that all the 4th of July fireworks were to celebrate her birthday) and thinking of them with a special prayer.

I did a couple of loads of laundry in the morning and hung everything up to dry.  I made American style pancakes for brunch to celebrate it being the 4th (even though I ate them with chicken curry gravy and lentil curry!  Fusion food!  I did have the last pancake with syrup!  LOL.)  I've planned to have a hamburger for dinner.

No special plans for the rest of the day.  I'll probably repair my Log Cabin quilt and watch videos.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Celebrating the Independence Day of my adopted country
- Another sunny and warm day
- Working appliances
- Almost all the internal doors in this house having a door frame from which I can hang laundry, on clothes hangers, to dry!
- Phone calls and texts with family and friends

Today's joyful activity is sewing.

How is your day coming along?

  1. So that's how you dry your clothes. I imagined that you had them draped over everything. :)

    1. Ha, ha, well, I have a fairly large folding drying rack and two smaller drying racks, as well, for things like towels, pillowcases, socks, etc., but, the clothes are put on hangers and hung from the door frames. The bed sheets, too, are usually folded in half and hung up on two skirt/pants hangers. I used to have a clothes line, outside, but, I no longer hang laundry outside. Ants used to use the clothes line as a highway and the dried laundry would be full of ants!

  2. Happy 4th to you! My inside door frames are not useful for hanging hangers. They'd slide right off. I am taking it easy today. I've had an upset stomach since yesterday, but it seems to be settling down now. I've eaten bland today, dinner was just a boiled potato! Your pancake with curries sounds an interesting combination!

    1. I'm so sorry to hear that you are having an upset stomach, Celie, and hope you feel better, tomorrow. Eating a bland diet is good for an upset tummy - the BRAT (Banana, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) diet is what is often recommended.
There is an Indian food item known as dosa which is made with a mixture of fermented rice and urad dal (or fenugreek) batter - it has a different taste than regular pancakes, but, a similar appearance and I often substitute pancakes for dosa. No need to soak the rice and urad dal, then, grind them and leave to ferment, etc. :)

  3. Dancer seems to be recovering well having a good appetite and being fussy too. I'm having a problem with ants too and hopefully they won't climb on my washing which I hang outside to dry :-(

    1. Dancer is being a very fussy, spoiled cat! At one point, yesterday, he had 4 different bowls of wet cat food set out in front of him in a veritable cat buffet, because he refused the first three flavors of cat food I gave him! My daughter was laughing at me because I was catering to him so much, but, I felt sorry for him because he's been ill. I think he's taking advantage of me being such a softie, though!
I hope you don't get ants in your dried laundry, Eileen. I think the ants in my garden found the clothes line to be cooler to walk on that the hot soil, that particular summer! Sometimes, I find them coming inside the house when it is super hot outside.

  4. Happy belated 4th of July wishes. Were the noisy neighbours quiet on the holiday weekend? I would like an outside clothes line but alas bird poop not ants is my bain! Glad to hear Dancer is feeling better enough to request/demand his breakfast :)

    1. Thank you, Mary-Lou. Yes, the neighbors were quiet! Yes, bird poop is another problem and also, I'm worried about fleas from the outdoor cats! Dancer has access to his kibble 24/7, but, he wants his wet food in the mornings. If I ignore him, he will eat his kibble and then, come into my room and throw up right next to my bed! He's mean! This morning, my pillow had fallen down on top of what he regurgitated and I've had to wash my pillow!

Poor Dancer. He must have been starving ;)

    1. Thank you, Jules.
Oh, yes, if you ask him, Dancer will definitely agree with you that he's starving! :D It's not like he doesn't have access to his kibble 24/7! :D

  6. Dancer just wanted to start the day of celebration early! In contrast, our outdoor critters seem to get up late. I have sometimes left a few peanuts on the porch and they have stayed untouched for an hour, and we don't get up all that early!

  7. Happy Independence Day. Was the official weekend the one just past, or this coming one? I thought it was yet to come, but only reading between the lines from Laurie's mail. She does use a kind of shorthand, though!

PS Sounds as if Dancer is taking you for a ride! Tut, tut!

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella. There is no official weekend for the Independence Day celebrations, unless it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case, workers get the day off on Friday (if July 4 falls on a Saturday) or on Monday (if July 4 falls on a Sunday). But, if it falls on a Tuesday, as it did this year, then, the holiday day off is taken on Tuesday and any special celebrations such as parades and fireworks displays take place on the day.
Dancer is becoming a spoiled brat!

  8. Happy 4th July! Glad Dancer is hungry! I'm glad it's over though. I've had enough of the fireworks going off late at night!

    1. Thank you, Sharon; hope you had a good day, too. People are still setting off fireworks, here! But, not as many as they did, yesterday!

  9. I'm glad you were able to go back to sleep after your early morning alarm cat came to call. It's good he has a new favorite. At least he's eating.
I laughed when you had on your grateful list framing around your door frames sufficient for having laundry. Did you search hard for that one or are you always mindful of it as you do your laundry?
I think that's a perfect entry for a grateful list. Small things add up to a sense of wellbeing.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, at least he's eating (we are back to tuna, now, after refusing to eat it for a couple of weeks!)
The door frames are one of those random things I'm grateful for every time I do laundry - a working washing machine (remember the old one, when I had to wring out the water by hand because the spinner didn't spin that well?), a working dryer should I decide to use it (the old dryer would tumble the clothes, but, wouldn't heat up to dry the clothes), and the door frames which allow me to hang the laundry inside. :)
