Saturday: Yard Sale Goodies

Yard Sale Buys:
Two New Sets of Kitchen Towels and Box of Stationery

Neighbor T's daughter and son held their yard sale, on Saturday.  It started at 8:00 a.m., but, I waited until 11:00 a.m. to go over to have a look.  Before I went over, I decided I would look for any kitchen towels as I could always use some kitchen towels or share with my daughter (I tossed one of my old kitchen towels that had been used as a rag to clean the patio set, yesterday; it was already torn and wouldn't have withstood being washed another time) and maybe one or two other items if they were something I could actually use (no decorative items).  I took $5 with me and that was my budget for the day.

I am glad I had decided what I wanted to get, beforehand!  There were so many items to tempt me!  I found not one, but, two sets of kitchen towels, still in their original packaging and I picked up both.  I debated with myself over the box of stationery, but, in the end, I decided to get that, too, if only for the envelopes!  None of the items had any price tags on them and when I asked K how much she wanted for the kitchen towels and the box of stationery, she said $5 and I was happy because that was the amount I had planned to spend!

K and her brother said that they've had a steady stream of people stopping by, which was good to hear.  I told them that if any of their customers needed additional parking, they could park in my driveway and they thanked me, but, no one parked in my driveway.  I guess they found adequate parking on the street.

In the afternoon, I sewed on the quilt I'm mending and watched some videos.  Later, I mended one of my old knitted socks; it's one that I had mended once, already, but, it had a gaping hole in the heel, again!

On Friday, when M was here, we pulled up the snow pea vines as they have more or less finished their season.  But, there were some mature pods on the vines and they had formed peas.  I picked them all off the vines and shelled the peas, on Saturday.  There was about half a cup of peas and I boiled them to have as part of my dinner:

After dinner, I ran the dishwasher and tidied the kitchen.  I might have baked a cake, too!

Chocolate Cake

On Saturday, I was grateful for:

- A sunny and warmer day (the high was 73F)
- Finding two sets of kitchen towels at the yard sale
- Fresh peas from the garden
- Being able to video chat with my daughter
- Working appliances

Saturday's joyful activity was attending the yard sale!

No firm plans for Sunday.  I'll probably do a little tidying and decluttering.

How was your Saturday?  What are your plans for Sunday?  Do you like to go to yard sales?

  1. You did well buying things you needed from the yard sale and wise to set yourself a budget. I have been to plenty of car boot sales, organised events in fields but don't think I've ever been to a yard sale. I'm like you now, no need to buy other people's clutter I have enough of my own :)

    1. I had $10 to play with, as they didn't charge me for the file cabinet or the patio set. I was saving the other $5 for today, although I didn't spend it. I'm supposed to be decluttering, not adding to the clutter! :D

  2. Here in France we have Vide Greniers (Empty Your Attics) in villages, rather than individual Yard Sales - although they do exist from time to time. I'm not keen on them, as quite often it's just tat. I'm not very good with Other People's Tat - it makes me feel a bit squirmy!! But it sounds like you got what you needed, so that was good!

    1. I think there are community yard sales, here, too, and swap meets, but, otherwise, it's mostly individual yard or garage sales. I enjoy going to yard sales, etc., but, I am now trying to declutter and not add more stuff! :)

  3. Good pickings at the yard sale! I probably would have come back with something like that, too. How nice to have fresh peas with your dinner. I wonder how much of that lovely chocolate cake will make its way on the "food-go-round"? Always useful to have something to share.
It has cooled right off here and was only 50°F outside this morning. I can see needing a light jacket when I go out as it will not be much over 70°F later on.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. All useful stuff, I assure you! I resisted the unopened box of Christmas cards, when I went over today (to give them some of the chocolate cake! Ha, ha, you know me so well!) but, came back with a board game!
Wow, that's quite a dip in the temperature, to go from 90F to 50F! 71F is supposed to be our high, here, too!

  4. The first Village yard sale for the year is next Saturday, and then every Saturday in June, one village or another is holding one . I love looking, but I am strict about spending. Bob looks for 2nd hand tools , I go for haberdashery and kitchenwares

    1. I like the idea of a village yard sale! Will you be participating in your village's yard sale?

  5. How lucky they had just what you needed, and for the price you wanted to pay! I'm glad that your neighbours had a successful sale. Hope they managed to shift a lot of their mother's stuff and make a bit of money back too. No doubt the envelopes will come in handy.

    1. It all worked out well for me, didn't it? Last Christmas, I made cards to send out and didn't have envelopes! I cut out and made my own envelopes, but, that took a bit of time (eventually, I gave in and ordered a pack of envelopes). Today, I saw an unopened box of Christmas cards, but, I resisted the temptation to buy it. Instead, I acquired a board game and at the end of the sale, when they were putting some items by the curb for bulky item pick up on Tuesday, I rescued a bookcase and a small stool. There was a cabinet, too, that I considered taking, but I don't know what I'd do with it/where I'd keep it, so I didn't get it. I hate to see stuff go to the landfill.

  6. New kitchen towels are always a treat because they tend to get stained so quickly. Good job with self-control at the sale.

    1. Thank you, June. Yes, having new kitchen towels mean I can "retire" at least 4 old, very threadbare kitchen towels to the "cleaning cloths" category. I have microfiber cloths, too, for dusting and stuff, but, sometimes, you need a towel to wipe up a mess and I used and tossed the very last one of my old cleaning cloths after M cleaned the new patio set (the cloth was too torn to survive another wash).

  7. Those peas look tasty. I love to eat them fresh from the pod.
They were lucky finds at the yard sale. And you were wise to set a budget, it can be easy to get carried away :)

    1. The peas were a treat!
I'm happy with my yard sale finds! I acquired a board game, too, on Sunday and a couple of other free items. It's so hard to resist all the lovely things that were being sold!

  8. Good job getting those towels -and the writing paper will come in handy.
I hope K and her brother were able to get rid of quite a bit which will help them in their effort to clean things out. It's quite the job.
A person's life is a lot to be dealt with and then their's the emotional side of things. Did K and her brother grow up in that house?

    1. Thank you, Debra. The kitchen towels will definitely come in useful and I'm set for cards and notepaper for the rest of the year!
I think K and brother R did well and got rid of quite a bit. Some of the bigger pieces of furniture like the living room sofa set, was put out for bulky item pick up, but, I think quite a bit of it got picked up by people who were passing by. I took a small bookcase they were putting out and saved it from going to the landfill! At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :D
I spoke with T and she was a bit upset about some of her things being sold or given away and we talked about that. K said she felt very emotional about some of the items, too, while her brother didn't seem to mind so much. They moved into that house when they were children and lived there until they moved out as adults.
I didn't think T had a lot of stuff in her house on the few occasions I've been there (nothing like what I have!), so I was surprised at how many things there were when I attended the yard sale. Now, I'm looking around my house and shaking my head! My daughter will have to hire a dumpster!
