June Grocery Shopping: Part 1

I put in an order for groceries last night and picked up the items, today.  Besides Dancer's cat food, which came to $3.27 with tax (which doesn't come from my grocery budget), I bought:

1.12 lb. shrimp, on sale with digital coupon for $6.99/lb. = $7.83 (splurge item!)

1 doz. store brand large eggs = $2.99

1 plain yogurt, 32 oz., with digital coupon = $2.99

1 loaf (20 oz.) store brand sandwich bread = $1.99

2 bulbs of garlic, @$0.50 = $1.00

1 piece ginger root, 0.29 lb @$2/lb. = $0.58

1 lb. jar store brand roasted peanuts = $3.49

2 bottles store brand apple juice, 65 fl. oz. @ $1.69 with digital coupon = $3.38

5 lb. bag russet potatoes = $3.99 (in lieu of a bag of potato chips!)

2 packets chocolate wafer cookies @ $1 = $2.00 (treats!)

My total, with Dancer's cat food, came to $33.51, but, since his cat food isn't part of my grocery budget, my groceries total was $30.24

Plus what I spent on groceries at the dollar store on Tuesday = $5.00

Total spent to date on groceries in June = $35.24

June grocery budget = $100.00

Balance left in the June grocery budget = $100 - $35.24 = $64.76

In addition, I also have $64.46 carried over from the May budget, since I only did one grocery shopping pick up in May, on the 18th.  I'm keeping that money in reserve for stocking up, later, for when I'll need to replenish my stock of sugar, for example, after I use what I have on hand for making jams and chutneys, this summer.

Have you gone grocery shopping in June, yet?  Are you staying on budget?

  1. It sounds like you're doing really well with your food budget! I am definitely not. I am sticking to menus though so that is a plus. I just find some things really expensive right now. I need to look for alternatives.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Things ARE expensive! I just look at the prices of some items and decide I don't need them! I am mostly buying whatever is on sale that week, with the occasional splurge item (like the shrimp, which was on sale). I do realize that it is easier to do that when it is just one individual and you are not trying to feed a family.

  2. I paid the equivalent of about 2.60 USD for plain yogurt yesterday. Bread is about the same or 2.99 USD. I remember buying a small piece of ginger root in England as I was going to make a dish for my parents and they were amazed as they would never buy such an item!

    1. Sounds like you got a good deal on the yogurt, Bushlady. The store brand bread I bought is the cheapest; all the other loaves of bread were more expensive. I like to use fresh ginger and garlic when I make my curries, etc. But, the ginger I bought today is specifically for the chutney I am planning to make when the peaches are ripe (if they will ever get ripe - the weather is so cold that the fruits are not ripening!)

  3. You have a healthy budget left for stocking up now and it's how I shop, wait for items to come on offer. Your eggs are less expensive than ours here I have to say. I'm doing smaller shops now and using what I have in the freezer as items tend to stay frozen for too long :)

    1. Thank you, Eileen. Yes, I can now stock up when something goes on sale/on offer without worrying about the regular groceries, as well. The egg prices have come down! Maybe the chickens are laying more eggs now that it is summer? Sounds like you have a good strategy to stretch the grocery budget - buying less and using up what you have in the freezer, etc. :)

  4. Did you see Jennifer (that was her name, right?) when you did your pick up?

    1. Yes! I did see Jennifer after a long time! I had been asking about her in my previous visits and they must have told her. She said she's still at the store and she sees my name come up on the order lists, but, we've missed each other at pick up times. It was good to see her again, although she's stopped giving me discounts. :)

  5. Your prices seem to be holding steady. Do you find that? I'm wondering if the increases have slowed down. I know inflation has dropped. But I'm not sure if food is in the number I just heard.
For some reason, I don't think it is.
I was out of potatoes and got 10 pounds for $5.49 the other day. It wasn't a sale price, just the price at Aldi's.
You do so well sticking to your budgets.

    1. I think some items, like the bread and the wafer cookies, have remained steady, and I know I've bought shrimp at that price with a digital coupon, earlier, too. Other items, like the eggs, have actually come down. But, other items, like the peanut butter I bought last time, have gone up. I know that the 10 lb. bags of sugar have gone up - I'm using what I have in the pantry for the jams and chutney I am making now, but, replacing that sugar will cost me more. My strategy is to buy the items I need on sale with digital coupons or multi-buy deals, when I can.
