On the First Day of Autumn

Garden Lizard

Our daytime high was 88F and I loved it!

Last night, around midnight, I baked a cake - just a yellow cake from a boxed cake mix; but, I added some freshly grated lemon zest to it and mixed some powdered sugar with lemon juice to drizzle over it.  Then, I had a slice of still warm cake before going to bed!  This afternoon, I took a piece of cake over to neighbor S.

I spent most of the day sewing the backing for the quilt - I don't have enough of the fabric I chose for the backing, so, have to "piece it out" with other fabric I have in my stash.  I don't mind that, but, Dancer apparently needs to do quality control checks at every step!

More Quality Testing In Progress

In the evening, I called friend A to check on her, called friend R to chat with her, and received a call from aunt C.  I also emailed and messaged two cousins for their birthdays.

Later, I video chatted with my daughter and she helped me to put in an order of groceries.  She went into the office, today; earlier this week (on Tuesday), there had been a shooting during the middle of the afternoon, just two blocks from her office.  It was in the news and daughter had received an emailed notification from the office about it, too.  I am glad that she needs to go into the office only once a week for now.  She treated herself to some sushi for lunch, from a nearby restaurant (just down the block and across the street from her office, she said) that does take out as well as dine in; the lunch special was enough for both her lunch and dinner, she said!

I had a salad for brunch and ramen noodles with chicken, broccoli, and corn for dinner.  There is more of the ramen noodles leftover for tomorrow.  There might have been a slice or two of cake, as well!  LOL!

Today, I am grateful for:
- My daughter had a safe commute and day at the office and a safe walk to the sushi restaurant and back!
- A sunny warm day
- My own special quality control officer!
- Phone calls and emails, etc., with family and friends
- The fabric stash!

Today's joyful activity was eating cake playing with fabric!

Plans for tomorrow include picking up my groceries, taking a piece of cake to friend R, and tending to the garden with M (there's a piece of cake for him, too).

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

    1. Thank you, Angela; it was the 4th shooting this week in that town. :(

  2. A shooting close to your daughter's office sounds very scary. Your cake sounds nice and enough to share, you've made me want to buy a packet cake mix now and liven it up with some lemon, hubby doesn't like lemon but that's okay :)

    1. It was the 4th shooting for this week, in that city, but it was the closest to her office. Every day, I say a prayer for her safety.
I didn't add a lot of lemon zest and I think I should have added more - the lemon flavor was not very pronounced. You could mix up the cake batter, divide it in half, and add the lemon zest to just half of the batter - that way, you'll have some cake for you with lemon and some for your husband without lemon. You could either bake in two smaller cake tins or make cup cake or, even, make a barrier with some kitchen foil in the middle of a regular baking tin with the two types of batter on either side. :)

  4. The thought of your cake is making me feel hungry. It sounds delicious.
Hearing about the shooting must have been such a worry for you. X

    1. It was just what I wanted to have, Jules, and it was the last cool night to bake, before we warmed up, again. We are supposed to go up to 100F early next week. :)
I was concerned when I heard about the shooting - when it happens so close to offices in the middle of the day, it is scary!

  5. I love your little lizard! He reminds me of warm places and we are likely to get a frost tonight. But we already have some leaves changing colour so we have beautiful scenery to look forward to. I like your upgrade of the boxed cake mix, it sounds delicious and adds variety to the ongoing "food-go-round"!
We are getting ready to leave for our trip on Sunday and trying not to forget any details. At least DH has made a trial run in August!

    1. I am seeing quite a few of these lizards around, this year. I am thinking it is because I have fewer garden cats to catch them! I hope they are ridding the garden of lots of unwanted insects!
You are experiencing Autumn and we are having Indian Summer, I guess; it was 95F today and the weather forecast says we will be going up to 100F next week. :)
I was able to share pieces of cake with S, and friend R, and gardener M and I was happy to do so. :)
Oh, I hope you have a wonderful and safe trip, Bushlady.

  6. Hearing about the shooting must be a worry. I love how Dancer 'helps' you with your projects. When we had our cat as soon as I picked up a project he would decide that was the time to sit on my lap!

    1. Yes, it is worrying to know that there had been a shooting, in broad daylight, so close to daughter's office! But, there have been shootings in my neighborhood, too. Life in the big city, I guess.
Dancer is not much of a lap cat, but, he is a wonderful "helper"! :D

  7. We as parents tend to worry about our kids whether they are close or far. There's not much we can do in many situations except pray for their safety and realize that, by and far, things do go well.

    1. Yes, you are right, June; we tend to worry, but, there isn't much that we can do about their safety and well being other than pray! Yesterday, she came down with another migraine headache, so she's recovering from that, today.

  8. I'm glad your daughter is safe, Bless. That is a scary situation to have so close to her,
Your lemon cake sounds very good. I am sure you slept well after a slice of that on your way to sweet dreams.

    1. Thank you, Debra. There is nowhere that is 100% safe, and there have been shootings within a few blocks of my house, too, but, it is a little disconcerting when it happens.
The cake turned out well; I managed to share a good portion of it, but, I had planned on doing that in the first place. :)

  9. Gosh - a shooting rather too close for comfort. I sincerely hope that we aren't going the same way here - although certain cities seem to have a distinct, emerging problem...

    1. It's the "wild, wild, west", Lady Ella. I hope it doesn't get that way over there, too.

  10. Thank heavens your daughter was safe. Crime is simply out of control; very few places are exempt, although some are much worse. I keep asking myself -- have we lost our collective minds or what!

    1. Thank you, Susanne. There seems to be so much crime in our communities, these days.
