Heat Wave!

Temperature Inside the House at 6:60 p.m. on Friday

Late in the evening, yesterday (Friday), there was a roll of thunder which surprised me, followed by a sprinkle of rain!  Just a light drizzle which lasted only a few minutes, which really didn't do much because it was still 90F outside, but, there was a breeze, afterwards, which was very welcome!  Of course, the rain just made it more humid, but, I didn't care!  It rained, even just a tiny bit!  I had already spoken with friend R, earlier in the evening, but, she called to ask me if I had any rain because it sprinkled a bit where she lives, too!  LOL!  We southern Californians go a bit crazy when it rains!  There is even more rain in the forecast for next weekend (a 35% chance), but, we shall see if it actually rains then.

It was so hot, last night, that, I turned on the a/c in the bedroom and stayed up, reading a magazine, until it had cooled off.  Then, I brought in a stand fan from the living room and set it up so that it was focused on me, turned the a/c off, opened the doors just enough so Dancer didn't complain, and slept!

Today, we had a day time high of 108F and the temperature inside the house went up to about 92F.  It's 10:30 p.m. as I type this, the temperature outside has cooled down to 86F, but, the house is still at 90F.

I did a load of laundry in the morning, then, because the 'clean washer' indicator light has come on twice now, I ran a cleaning cycle, too.  The laundry was hung up inside the house to dry.  It added to the humidity, but, with it being so hot, things dried in no time at all.

In the afternoon,, the heat got to me, so I retreated to the bedroom and switched on the air conditioner.  Dancer was not happy and we went through the "I want to be on the other side of the closed door" routine a few times until he eventually decided that on the bathroom floor just outside the closed bedroom door was an acceptable spot, with the occasional meow to let me know he was there and not entirely pleased with the situation.

In the meantime, I dusted the bedroom, remade my bed with the already dry sheets, moved the small folding side table from the family room into the bedroom, set up the sewing machine on it, and sewed some patchwork pieces for about half an hour.  I had to sit on the edge of my bed to sew and without a back support, half an hour was about as long as I could sit and sew.  Afterwards, I turned on the laptop and watched some videos and played sudoku games.

Around 6:30 p.m., I turned the a/c off, opened the windows in the other rooms to air out the house (although it was still quite hot outside) and stayed in the cool bedroom with the fan on for another hour or so.  After that, I came out of the room, although the rest of the house felt like an oven after the coolness of the bedroom.  I folded and put away the dried laundry and decided that the next time I retreat to the bedroom and put the a/c on, I will sort through my closet.

Later in the evening, I did the dishes, doing some by hand and the rest in the dishwasher.  I chatted on the phone with friend R and video chatted with my daughter.  She had decided to do a painting this evening:

Daughter's Painting

Brunch had been a slice of bara brith with butter followed by the last of the fruit salad.  Later, at tea time, I had some cream crackers and a glass of cold chocolate milk instead of tea.  Later, I ate some grapes.  I cooked some frozen gyoza/potstickers for dinner.

Today's decluttering included an old teacup.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A daughter who cares if I take my medicines or not
- Working appliances
- Electricity to run them
- Clean water for drinking, for cooking, for washing clothes, for washing dishes, for washing myself
- Phone calls, emails, video chats, etc.

Today's joyful activity was keeping cool in the air conditioned bedroom.

It's just after midnight - it has cooled down to 84F outside, but it is still 88F inside the house!  The forecast for tomorrow says it will be 105F.  Plans for tomorrow include starting the car and letting it run for a bit, sorting through my closet, and keeping cool!  LOL.

How was your Saturday?  What are your plans for Sunday?

  1. Oh Bless I do feel sorry for you in that heat, those high temperatures are worrying and I'm so glad you are able to keep cool in your home. It makes me so happy that you are enjoying a slice of buttered bara brith. Your daughter's painting is lovely, i like the reflection from the window, she is very talented. It's quite dark and raining this morning we certainly need the rain, I wish I could send some over to you.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; it's 110F/43C right now. :) I currently have both the ceiling fan and a stand fan on in the family room (around 91F inside the family room), debating if I want to go to the bedroom and switch on the a/c in there.
That bara brith with butter is addictive! I'm looking forward to a slice, this evening. :)
Thank you, I thought my daughter's painting was very good, but, she was not quite satisfied with the foreground. :)
I am glad you are getting some rain and would be very happy if you could send some over to me! :)

  2. Your daughter's painting is lovely. She is very talented.
It's drizzly and grey here this morning, so I've hung my washing indoors as well. Xx

  3. Hot here too! Yesterday I did lots of laundry - the bed linens dried quickly outside. Today will be church - then getting ready to travel to Manchester tomorrow. I do hope there's working A/C on the train!

  4. You had a productive day, especially considering the heat. Your daughter's painting is very good. She was able to do that in one evening? Wow!

    1. Thank you, June; I was pleased with what I was able to get done, yesterday. Thank goodness for working appliances! They did most of the actual work! :D
My daughter said it took her about 2 1/2 hours to do the painting, but, she needs new paint brushes, because the ones she has now were shedding bristles as she painted and she had to pick them out of the paint!

  5. I don't envy you managing in those temperatures but your excitement at the drizzle made me smile. We're expecting rain every day this week so I am hoping that they have the forecast right for once. Is Dancer bothered by the heat?

I like your daughter's painting. Did she take another class or is this one from her imagination. Whichever it is, the end result is very good.

    1. I do get excited about a little drizzle, don't I? :D I hope you receive the rain that is in your forecast. Dancer sheds like crazy in this heat and you can usually find him stretched out on the cool ceramic tiled bathroom floor for the most part, poor kitty.
Daughter followed an online tutorial. By the way, that is supposed to be Hogwarts in the background! :D

  6. Your daughter is incredibly talented. It's not just the painting, it's the arrangement and ideas that go with it.

I am fascinated by your weather. It's so much warmer there, and I think that it informs the way you look at it. It seems that your house is designed to keep heat out. Ours is designed to keep heat in. And poor Dancer has a fur coat in all that.

    1. Thank you, Lyssa; she followed a tutorial online and added a few extra touches of her own (the parchment, quill pen, etc.) because she thought the foreground looked too empty. :)
It is 110F right now (and they are saying it might go up to 112F, today) and 92F inside. The humidity is around 21%, so it doesn't feel quite as sticky. I am in the family room with the ceiling fan and stand fan on; haven't decided to go to the bedroom and turn the a/c on, yet.
The house does stay about 10 degrees cooler during the day; it's a good thing during the summer, but, not so good during winter! Then, again, I tolerate heat better than I do the cold!
Dancer is shedding his fur like crazy!

  7. Hi my friend, I am not going to complain of heat here in central Indiana after reading about your 108..omg. I have my AC set at 73...and it comes on still. I try to mow on a day that is not going to get too hot, and always before the heat of the day. I like your daughter's painting. It is great to have kids who care about us. Blessings to you and yours, xoxo, Susie

    1. Hi, Susie! Oh, it's so good to hear from you! 73F is too cold for me! LOL! It's 110F here, today, and the forecast says it might go up to 112F! Our humidity is low, which makes it easier to bear the heat. Hope you stay cool out there and take care of yourself. (((HUGS)))

  8. Thank goodness you have one room with A/C to sleep and relax in. A pity about not having a back support. I hope you get more rain. We had a torrential downpour just when I was about to leave and go to the Saturday Vigil Mass and there was thunder, too, and I just couldn't see going out into it. By the time it stopped, it was too late. Funnily enough, the creek is very low, also the river, but we haven't been short of rain really. The family arrived in time for supper and we watched some videos in the evening. We had some brief power outages that were so fast we almost missed them. They just disrupted the internet and made the outdoor light come on, which went off again during the next blip! Very strange!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady; I'm very grateful that M set up the a/c unit for me. I haven't yet slept with it on, but, will cool the room down a bit before I go to sleep.
Good idea not to go out in that rain storm! Glad the family arrived safely and the power outages were only for brief periods of time. Hope you have a lovely weekend, Bushlady. :)

  9. My goodness, this is really dangerous with these temperatures this high. I am following in the news about the heat you are experiencing. I couldn't believe how high it got even up in the northern parts of your state.
I'm so glad you have the option of retreating to your bedroom.
Good idea moving the fan in there. You are managing and that's what we all do when circumstances are difficult.

I really like your daughter's painting. She's very talented :)

    1. Yes, we are having a rather sustained heatwave, this year. More of the "new normal" I suppose. As long as the electricity holds out to run the fans and the a/c's, but, the problem is, there is a lot of stress on the electrical power grid and we are being asked to conserve as much as possible to avoid power outages and rolling blackouts, etc. I am managing and am not complaining too much! You know I'll miss this heat when winter comes! I have a fairly high heat tolerance, but, a very low cold tolerance!
Thank you, Debra; I like her painting, too, and at the back of my mind, I can still see a little girl, crying because her 1st grade teacher wanted her to paint a picture (she wanted the students to enter an art competition) and, "I can't draw or paint" (what she meant was she couldn't draw or paint the way she wanted to; of course not, because she was only 5 at the time). The theme was an underwater scene and eventually, after the tears ended, she did a painting and it placed in the final 10 and received an honorable mention. I still have the painting (she hates it) and the award she received. :)
