New Socks |
Today, I spent a relatively quiet day. The morning was cloudy, but, it didn't rain. In the afternoon, we had brilliant sunshine. After I woke up, I responded to blog comments. The majority were friendly comments from all of you who read my blog on a regular basis, but, there was one rather virulent one about baby boomers, which I deleted.
Today, I walked in my driveway for about 15 minutes, waved hello to a couple of my neighbors and the trash truck driver, brought the trash cans in, checked on a couple of my cousins and friend R, and watched news. I started knitting a scarf with another skein of leftover yarn, but, didn't like it and unpicked the whole thing. I also read a bit and took a brief nap on the sofa.
Brunch was leftover milk rice and onion sambol, followed by a fresh orange. Later, I had an egg salad sandwich with my evening cup of tea. For dinner, I reheated some of the roast beef with onions and potato. I was going to cook carrots and green beans to go with it, but, while I was cooking the onions and potatoes, I got one of those eye aura/visual migraines, so I curtailed the cooking and rested in a darkened room for a while. Then, I ate the roast beef and potato with cucumber slices. I will cook the carrots and green beans to have with the leftover beef and potatoes, tomorrow. I had some fresh grapes and a piece of chocolate for dessert.
Later in the evening, I exchanged emails with a friend and video chatted with my daughter.
Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to walk in my driveway and garden
- My daughter's work colleagues have been checking on her
- Phone calls, texts, emails, and video chats
- Afternoon naps
- All the people who are performing work deemed essential
Today's joyful activity was napping!
How was your Tuesday? What are your plans for Wednesday?
The socks must be so comfortable yo wear, so cute! For today for me is more cooking of course, sourdough bread in the making☺ Have a lovely day!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Natalia. Oh, sourdough bread! That sounds delicious! Do you make your own starter? One of the things I forgot to buy when I was stocking up was yeast! I have one packet, which has expired. I guess I should proof it to see if it is still any good.
DeleteMy daughter is makingh a sourdough loaf every day. She has just sent me the link to her goto recipe https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2007/nov/24/foodanddrink.baking8
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angela. Bread making still intimidates me (I've only done so a couple of times), but, I am going to give it a try!
DeleteI'm glad the migraine disappeared reasonably quickly. They really are miserable things aren't they.
ReplyDeleteThe socks look very comfy. Are you keeping them for yourself or will they be gifted?
The shops were all out of bread flour and yeast the last time I went shopping, so I am using up the bread in the freezer for now. Once that's gone I will have to manage without for a while ... I'm supposed to be cutting down on carbs so every close has a silver lining!
Take care x
Thank you, Eileen. I used to get the full blown migraine, several years ago; these days, I only get the optical ones, with the "dancing lights" as I call it. Even so, they are not pleasant.
DeleteI think I'll keep the socks for myself, to wear when I sleep. I accidentally felted an earlier pair I knitted, so, these are to replace them.
I have flour, but, forgot to even look for yeast! Oh, well, I still have about half of the loaf I bought and a package of three 1-lb. loaves of bread dough in the freezer. So, I won't lack for bread for at least a few weeks. Plus, as long as I have flour and grated coconut (I've both frozen and desiccated), I can make roti (flat bread) to have instead of bread. Or, I'll learn how to make what they call biscuits, over here, with baking powder - a little like scones. :)
Beautiful socks! Sounds like a quiet day, compared to what you are used to! Andrea
ReplyDeleteThank you, Andrea. Yes, it was a fairly quiet day. Somehow, I'm finding it hard to get back into the swing of things!
DeleteYou have a skill in knitting that I wish I had. My mother could sew and knit nearly everything we wore growing up, but I didn't have the patience or desire to learn. *sign of regret* Those socks are lovely.
ReplyDeleteI am still finding it difficult to drag myself away from the news. It keeps drawing me back like a moth to the light. I wanted to keep it down to the one update at noon by our Federal ministers, but YouTube brings me news from other countries trying to deal with the crisis. I need to distance myself with distraction. I will try harder today.
Thank you, Susan. Maybe you can learn to knit as a distraction from watching the news! Although, I knit while I watch the news! LOL. There are lots of good tutorials online that teach knitting, etc.
DeleteI read the news headlines online in the morning, just to make sure there is a world still out there! Then, in the afternoon, I turn on the TV to watch the news - I watch a few different news broadcasts from Japan, Germany, and Britain, in addition to our network news. It's something I've been doing for a long time, now, because I am a news junkie! I usually knit or crochet while I watch news. :)
I like the socks, those colours will go with anything. It is so nice being able to get outside & breath deeply. My Wednesday plans are to pick up (curbside) from a lady at our church who has sewn face masks for all of us in the congregation. We all have time slots so there's no gathering happening. Glad to hear that your daughter has a network of friends to check on her. Staying apart doesn't mean we cannot connect.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Patio Postcards. To be quite honest, I bought this particular skein of yarn only because it was on clearance (100% wool for under $3); I wasn't keen on all the colors, but, I figured it will keep my feet warm! :)
DeleteThat's nice of that lady to sew the face masks. A friend suggested that I sewed some, myself, but, I've read that regular fabric won't keep the virus out. Still, it might be a case of something is better than nothing.
❤️❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you, Regine. Hope all is well with you. (((HUGS)))
DeleteYour socks look so warm and comfy.
ReplyDeleteThe other day you mentioned that you were thankful for your yarn stash and, I have to say, me too!
Perspective can sure change things from. "Oh my goodness - I have too much yarn, what is wrong with me always buying more yarn"
to
"Thank God I have all of this yarn to keep me happy during the quarantine"
Life changes on a dime sometimes.
Take care.
Thank you, Debra. You are right about our perspective changing, from feeling a bit guilty about the stash to feeling grateful for it! My stash was acquired when I saw things on sale and now, I can create from what I have on hand and still have fun. :)
DeleteToday we have been celebrating baby Jamie's 3rd birthday- fortunately we had shopped early for this little milestone, so,she got many wrapped boxes to rip into as well as cake and ice cream, although her 'guest list' consisted of family living here in lockdown- it is great seeing her happy and totally unaware there is anything worrisome or sad going on-
ReplyDeleteYour socks look so comfy- I have several pairs in various stages of incompletion that I should consider finishing- it is just always so much more fun to start things though!
Prayers for Whitney are definitely in order- she is at the moment fairly comfortable ... and she is her usual brave self, but every good and kind intent will be most appreciated-
Take care ... and the usual fond wishes to you and yours-
Barb
Happy birthday, little Jamie! I'm glad she got to enjoy a little party. :)
DeleteThank you; I tried on the socks, yesterday, and they are a little loose, but, I think they will work out fine. I am the same way as you with starting new projects and not finishing them!
I will post a prayer request for Whitney. Thank you for permitting me to do this, Barb.
Take care and all the best.
The socks are lovely and will be cosy for bedsocks or even in boots or round the house if your feet get cold. You were wise to take a break in the dark when your migraine symptoms started. I hope you are completely well now.
ReplyDeleteI used up all but the last crust of our last loaf of bread, but there are buns and bagels in the freezer. I think I will try proofing the expired yeast I have and if it works I will try to make bread, although I only have all-purpose flour (unbleached) in the house. Otherwise for a change I could make muffins for breakfast, or oatmeal scones (biscuits).
Thank you, Bushlady. I plan to wear them as bedsocks. :) Yes, I'm feeling well, now, thank you.
DeleteI hope the yeast will still be good and you'll be able to make another loaf of bread with it. I've used all purpose flour for bread, before, and have had good results. All the other alternatives you suggested are good, too. I made waffles for brunch, today. :)
I think several people had that comment. I don't know why people do that or what kind of pleasure they get out of it.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you are okay. The socks look great and at a bargain price!
I hope your daughter is doing well. I have often thought of her as I know she was in one of the areas that had to stay home first. My daughter is working from home but I think she is slowly going crazy from being in all day! The dogs are all a little confused!
Yes, I read that others had the comment appear in their in-boxes, too. Obviously, someone or something trying to make trouble.
DeleteI'm well, thank you. The socks are nice and warm and that was a great price on the wool, too, wasn't it?
My daughter is doing well, too, thank you, Sharon. She is starting to feel a little bit of "cabin fever" since she lives in a small studio apartment. She is trying not to go out at all, not even for groceries, so feels a bit cooped up. But, she's doing OK. I'm glad to hear that your daughter is keeping well. I can imagine the dogs are wondering what is going on! They'll get used to her being home and then, when she eventually goes to work, they'll miss her, I'm sure. :)
Hope all is well with you, too, Sharon.
I love the socks.
ReplyDeleteThe new normal it taking some getting used to, but there is nothing we can do about it. I need to get to the hardware store and buy some veggie seed. Spring is in full force here and I have a lot of time to work in the yard.
Thank you, Anne. :)
DeleteWhat this reminds me of is when I had to stay at home while undergoing chemo. I'd go to the clinic for treatments, but, other than that, my daughter begged me not to go anywhere! She was so worried that I might set sick because my immune system was compromised. So, I stayed home and didn't go to the stores, visiting, etc. There were visits from family and friends, though, and that's what is different, this time, around. Enjoy planting your garden; it'll be a victory garden of sorts, won't it? :)
The socks look good and cosy, and the colours are lovely. I'm glad you deleted that comment without giving it any thought. X
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jules. :) There's a reason why we have comment moderation on, isn't there?
DeleteOh, those socks are gorgeous! I love the yarn and all of the colors. Sorry to hear you had a migraine. Hope you are feeling better now.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stephenie. Just the colors on the socks will keep my feet warm, if the wool doesn't! LOL!
DeleteI'm feeling well, now, thank you. :)
