On Friday the 13th

Orange Iris

On Friday the 13th, the orange iris bulb that M planted in my garden last year, flowered for the first time!  Actually, as if to make up for not blooming last year, it produced two flowers:

Two Orange Irises

This is the area of the garden we are calling the "bulbery" since M planted it with various flowering bulbs, for the most part.  There are some succuments growing among the bulbs, too, to provide some interest when the bulbs are done and the plants get cut back.

The Second Orange Iris

The temperature on Friday went up to 91F and it felt like summer!  But, the spring blooming flowers are a little confused, I think.

Daughter had the day off from work on Friday and she did quite a bit of household stuff, including doing her laundry and tidying up.  Then, she picked quite a few lmons and juiced 15 of the Meyer lemons.  I have a recycled 56 fl. oz. container of pure lemon juice in the fridge now and I made some fresh lemonade with it, sharing some with M when he came to tend to the garden in the evening.  Daugher also zested some of the lemons and I am dehydrating the zest to use in baked goods, later.  Much later, she printed out a free dress pattern and cut out the pieces; she wants to try her hand at sewing herself a dress.

I cut out some paper hexagons to use for my paper piecing, cleaned up the kitchen after daughter finished juicing the lemons, texted with one of my cousins who is caring for her mother who has dementia, and did a few other things.

For brunch, we had bananas with peanut butter and I had half a ham sandwich, as well. For dinner, I cooked rice, breaded butterflied shrimp (bought frozen in January and cooked in the air fryer), and green peas, with sweet chili sauce:

Dinner: Rice, Breaded Shrimp, Green Peas

On Friday, I was grateful for:
- A lovely warm day
- Flowers in the garden
- Fresh lemonade
- M's help with the garden
- Daughter's help around the house

Friday's joyful activities included spending time in the garden.

Plans for the weekend might include a shopping trip to look for a dress for daughter.

What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. The iris is beautiful. I had quite a variety of iris colors at my previous house, but mostly one color here. Last year, I added a row of irises that used to be in Ward's grandmother's yard. They are all purple.

    1. Oh, those purple irises will be so pretty when they flower and they'll be special since they came from Ward's grandmother's garden. I hope you'll post a picture of the flowers when they bloom. :)

    1. The lemon trees are laden, this year. I'm loving the irises, too. Daughter has sewn a pleated skirt, before, and some cosplay items, but, this is the first dress she's making. We shall see how it works out. :)

  3. The iris is gorgeous, and the entire tableau with the lilies and other plants is lovely. I do not think I've seen an orange iris before. Some fresh lemonade right now would be delicious! The storm is moving more to the north of me, so snowfall predicted has been revised to only 6-8 inches. A huge relief! I used to sew dresses for myself when younger (and much thinner!) . I'm sure your daughter will do a fine job. She's very skilled at crafts and art details.

    1. Thank you, Celie. Credit for the plants in the tableau goes to M who shared and planted the bulbs and plants with me. Just the other day, he was talking about rooting a cutting from one of his plants for me.
Fresh lemonade is wonderful. Especially when there is a mini heatwave going on! I'm glad the predicted snowfall will be reduced. Hopefully, you can still attend the concert tomorrow.
My daughter cut out all the pieces for the dress, today, and I managed to find some matching thread in the stash. She might try sewing it, tomorrow. :)

    1. It is a striking color, isn't it? I looked at the price of iris bulbs/rhizomes online and they are expensive! I am hoping these irises will multiply over the years.

    1. Thank you, hannah jane. I, too, like the color of the orange irises. We didn't go dress shopping, after all. Well, not in person, anyway. Daughter shopped online and ordered a dress. :)
