Weekend Review

Saturday dawned sunny and warm.  I opened the windows to air the house and, on a whim, tried the heater, again, and it came on!  Yay!  At least the pilot light hadn't gone off!  That was a big relief for me to know that, because I was worried if the pilot light had gone off, then, that meant that the gas might be leaking!  I didn't smell any gas, but I'm glad to know that the pilot light was still burning.  So that meant, it was the thermostat that wasn't working properly - it doesn't always register that I've turned it on.

Sandy Expat had asked me about my space heater - it is a gas wall unit:

Space Heater
One side faces the living room, the other side faces the hallway which leads to the kitchen and bedrooms.  There is no fan to circulate the warm air - the heat diffuses and spreads throughout the house.  The warmest spot is directly in front of the heater, the coldest spots are the family room and the bed rooms.

So, early Saturday afternoon, I went to the nearby home improvement store (Home Depot) and bought a replacement thermostat.  Then, I wandered around their garden center and eventually bought two pink flowered zonal geranium plants for the front garden.  For now, I placed them in terra cotta pots that I already had and placed on the steps leading to the front door.

After that, I did the grocery shopping that I posted about, earlier.

All the shopping tired me out a bit.  After I came home, I ate a late lunch (bread and meatball curry) and rested on the sofa for about an hour or so.  I wanted to take a nap, but I didn't allow myself to do so, although I might have dozed a bit.

I had a cup of tea after that and then, took down the Halloween decorations.  I decided to wait on the Thanksgiving decorations until closer to the day.

Then, I started to cook the chicken chili.

Later that evening, my aunt and cousin came to dinner.  After they left, I video chatted with daughter and changed the clocks before going to bed.  I was able to get the heater to come on again, in the night, so I was happy.

Sunday, my daughter's phone call woke me up.  She was going to volunteer at a fund raising event and was waiting for her colleague who was giving her a ride there and back.

After her phone call, I got up and had a cup of coffee, replied to blog comments, read blogs and commented on them, etc.  Sometimes, I read blogs during my lunch breaks at the office, during the week, but, usually, don't post comments from the office and I don't always have time to post comments during the evening, either.  At least, if I take the time to comment, then, I might not get anything else done!  So, often, even if I keep up with the reading, I get behind in my commenting.

My neighbor T called me in the afternoon and we chatted for a bit.  Last time I visited her, she showed me a figurine of an angel which her dog had knocked off the table and she was so upset about it, I told her I will buy some super glue and glue it for her.  But I haven't had time to buy the glue.  When she called me today, she said she bought a tube of crazy glue, so I went over in the evening and glued the figurine for her.  She asked me if I needed to rush back or if I had time to sit and visit awhile, so, of course, I sat and chatted with her for about half an hour.

After I came home, I started to cook the rest of the chicken breast strips - I made a sort of teriyaki chicken.  First, I marinated the chicken strips in a little teriyaki sauce (about 1/4 cup):

Chicken marinating in teriyaki sauce

Then, sauted the marinated chicken strips in a little sesame seed oil  and vegetable oil mixture and added some freshly grated ginger and a couple of cloves of garlic (also grated):

Grated garlic and ginger
I added a little (about 1 teaspoon) of honey to the chicken mixture and cooked for about 15 minutes.  Then, added a little cornstarch to thicken the sauce.

Teriyaki Chicken
I wanted to sprinkle a little sesame seeds on top, but the jar of sesame seeds I had in the cabinet had turned rancid!  So, I tossed the sesame seeds!  Next time, I will store the seeds in the freezer!

In the meantime, I cooked some rice and sliced some cucumber:

Dinner: rice, teriyaki chicken, cucumber
Dessert was yogurt with brown sugar.

Breakfast had been a banana.  Lunch had been a cold cuts sandwich.  I also had an apple for a snack.

There were 9 chicken strips; I ate one for dinner and kept 2 in the fridge.  I froze the rest in two packages with 3 pieces each.  Just enough for a meal for daughter and me or for a couple of meals for me.

My aunt and cousin who visited me yesterday, called me today, too, to check on me; aunt in the morning and cousin in the evening.  They both said I had looked tired, yesterday, and they were concerned.  I also spoke on the phone with a friend (she called me on Saturday evening when aunt and cousin were visiting, so I told her I'll call her back, but it was too late to call her last night, so I called her today, instead).  Later, I video chatted with daughter.  She was tired after her day of volunteering at the fund raiser.

I cooked the pork trimmings, too - or, at least, started the process:

Pork Trimmings Being Boiled

I put the pieces in lightly salted water with about half an onion sliced, 3 cloves of garlic, and a few pepper corns.  Then, I covered it and boiled it for a good hour and a half, until the meat was very soft and the fat had rendered out.  Then, I put it in the fridge!  Tomorrow, I will decide exactly what I want to do with it!  Some sort of braised pork, maybe, or a stew, or broiled with a glaze.  I'll probably freeze half for later.  It's not meal planning, exactly, but knowing I have options in the freezer is a good thing.

This weekend, I was grateful for:
- The pilot light in the heater hasn't gone out
- The heater works (sometimes)
- Aunt and cousin visiting
- Friends calling
- Being able to help my neighbor by gluing her figurine together

How was your weekend?  Did you have a nice weekend? How are you doing with the time change? What are your plans for Monday?

    1. Yes, having already prepared food in the freezer is helpful on days when I feel like getting fast food - I can tell myself, "You have this and that in the freezer, all you have to do is warm it up in the microwave". Or, for those days when I don't feel like cooking or relatives call and say they are coming to visit! :)

Hope you had a peaceful weekend.

  3. Your gas wall heater looks like is dies the job for the climate where you live. Do you use flannel sheets? They make a world if difference in a cool bedroom.

You got a great deal done so a successful weekend. I know sometimes you get only a few hours sleep and you really are not a morning person. I wonder if you were able to start your work day later than what you now do that it might allow you to sleep a little more and suit your natural body click or would that be frowned upon where you work.

Cleanup of our leaves has begun. I am working on getting the bedrooms ready fior our visitors. I have dusted and vacummed, laundry caught up and made a long grocery list. Shopping day tomorrow. Weather changed back to on the cool side and we had a little rain.

    1. Sandy, yes, it does keep the house quite warm, when I have it on. Takes a little time, but it does a good job.

I do have a set of flannel sheets for both my bed and daughter's bed. I haven't used them yet, this year. I usually start using them in December. What I did do, the other night, was use a 2nd quilt on my bed. Top sheet, blanket, and 2 quilts! Plus socks! Then, I am so nice and warm, I don't want to leave my warm bed in the morning! :D

Sandy, I am already starting about 2 hours later than my usual starting time (I make it up in the evenings by working for another 2 hrs. from home, at night). I don't dare to ask if I can come in later than I do! I really need to work on going to sleep a couple of hours earlier so I can wake up a little earlier! Or...retire! LOL.

Sounds like you've had a very productive weekend, yourself and are busy with preparations for your visitors. :) I know you are looking forward to seeing your son and grandsons. I'm sure the time will pass quickly and they'll be with you before you know it! Have a lovely day, Sandy, and a good start to your week.

  4. Your chicken looks really delicious.

Keeping up with blogs is hard sometimes. I'm always amazed when I pop by to see what people have been up to just how many days have passed since I last visited, when it really only feels like a couple of days since I was reading.

Do you think your Aunt and cousin are worrying unnecessarily or do you feel tired? I hope you're saving enough energy to be able to hold your almsgiving in December. I know how disappointed you were at having to pass last year. Take care of yourself :) xx

    1. Thank you, Suzanne.

Yes, it takes time to do the blog rounds. :) But I enjoy reading them and I know how much I like it when people comment on my blog, so I try to comment on their blogs, as well. Otherwise, how will they know I visited? But I can easily spend a couple of hours a day, on blogs!

I feel tired. I wake up feeling tired, I go about my day feeling tired, I go to bed feeling wide awake, but knowing I am tired. I can do one or two things a day, that's all. Anything more and I am tired. But, some days, I have to do more than one or two things, so I push myself. Because I don't want to make my tiredness an excuse not to do things...does that make any sense?

But, I am determined to hold the almsgiving, this year. The monks have told me to scale back, to make just one or two items and that will be more than enough. I already know I will have more than just one or two items, but I'll prepare them a little at a time and freeze as much as I can and ask my friends to help.

  5. You have a lot of different things going on healthwise that give you plenty of reasons to feel tired, but I've got to believe that a regular sleep schedule would help. Maybe because that would be true for me. Have you always been an irregular sleeper. I know some people are just like that. One of my sons seems to have been born that way and has never outgrown it.

    1. I was always a night owl, which doesn't work too well with getting up early to go to school and work! My daughter is the same!

  6. I am so glad your heater is working for you and that it was just a matter of a faulty thermostat. :) Your teriyaki chicken looked so good. It is a favorite around here. I have stored my sesame seeds in the refrigerator and that helps keep them fresh. That was really sweet of you to help your neighbor and of your aunt to check on you. Have a good night my friend!

    1. Thanks, Debbie. These sesame seeds were more than two years old, I think! I will definitely store them in the fridge, next time. It was a pleasure to help my neighbor and yes, aunt checking on me is very sweet. Hope you are keeping warm and well, Debbie. Take care.

    1. Thank you, Debbie. I am going to start doing my bedtime routine a little earlier, so see if that will help. Turning the screens off (TV, computer) a little earlier might help, too! :)

  8. Your meals look delicious, well done indeed for such making them. I know how hard it is to cook when you are tired but you do so well with shopping, cooking and sharing your meals.
I am from England for most of my adult life I prepared and served three meals a day to family. Its very time consuming. Now I must admit I serve easy to prepare dishes and it is a treat to eat out.
Take care of yourself and rest when you need to.

    1. Thank you, Pam. I enjoy cooking, for the most part, but I am not sure if I can do 3 meals a day, every day! I tend to make a couple of dishes and eat from them all week! By the end of the week, however, I'm kind of tired of eating the same thing all week!

I budget $25/month separately for eating out. A few times a year, however, when my daughter is visiting me, I go over budget, but usually make it up (or use funds from the miscellaneous budget to cover it!)

Thank you, I thought it was fleece, but wasn't sure.
