In the afternoon, we went shopping. We both had a list of items we wanted to buy. Daughter wanted black leggings (the ones she has now are starting to tear, she said), a pair of sneakers (her current pair is looking rather worn), and a new pair of fall boots (the soles are coming off her current pair). I wanted a pair of black flat shoes (my current pair is several years old and looks shabby), a pair of boots (my old pair cracked across the toes and I tossed them), an iron (my present iron no longer steams and the temperature can't be regulated, it heats up when it is plugged in, even if the setting is turned off) and a rice cooker (my present rice cooker goes off before the rice is cooked; I have been forcing the button to stay down with a spoon handle jammed in there to prevent it from going off and have ended up burning the rice a couple of times because I misjudged the timing). So, yesterday, we went to Walmart to do our shopping.
Daughter didn't find the leggings she wanted and she couldn't find a pair of sneakers that she liked and which fitted her; but, she found a pair of black, calf length boots that she liked for $24.98. I found a pair of black shoes that I liked, but, they didn't have a pair in my size. I did, however, find a pair of boots I liked, for $19.98 :

I also bought a steam iron with a retractable cord and a small (2-4 cups) rice cooker. I haven't tried them out, yet, to see if they work, but, I'll do that, in the next couple of days. I have saved the receipt, in case I need to return them. I also bought some printer ink, a packet of copy paper, moth crystals, coffee filters, some bread, a coffee cake, half and half, and bananas, as well. Everything came to $163.21. with tax.
On the way home, we picked up some Chinese food for a late lunch.
After lunch, we rested a bit and then, we went to the pharmacy to pick up my refill that was ready. I offered to buy daughter an ice cream from the nearby ice cream shop, but, there was a bit of a line and she decided she didn't want any ice cream, after all. So, we came home without any ice cream.
Daughter had brought down two items of clothing for mending. A coat that had a button missing (she didn't have a replacement button) and a sweater with a sleeve that was unraveling. The coat had two rows of buttons to give it the appearance of being double breasted, but, one row was purely decorative. I just removed that row of buttons and took one of them to replace the button that was missing. The resulting look is slightly asymmetrical, but she's fine with that! The other alternative was to replace all the buttons with new buttons. I teased her about not being able to sew on a button, but, she claimed that it never occurred to her to remove the decorative row of buttons to get a button. She was ready to give the coat to be donated, but, now she gets to wear it a bit longer.

She brought down some other items of clothing to be donated as they no longer fit her. Some of them are what she took up, with her, when she originally moved up to Berkeley, as a college student. I haven't gone through what she brought down, but, I will do so and offer friend R first choice of the items for her granddaughter. The rest will be donated.
Yesterday, I was grateful for:
- Having daughter home for the entire day
- Being able to go shopping with her
- New boots for the season
- The pharmacy refilled my medication without any problems
- Sewing skills
Today (Monday), my daughter goes back to Berkeley, but, that's another post!
How was your Sunday? How likely are you to mend clothing? What are your plans for Monday?
You had a very nice visit with your daughter! And you got some good buys, but not so, your daughter...but you both will be happy with your boots. Andrea
ReplyDeleteYes, we had a nice visit. :) Looking forward to her next one! My daughter said she'll try a different store for her shoes and leggings. Or, we will try again, when she comes down, next. :)
DeleteThe off-set buttons look very fashion forward (said as if I even know what that is). :) Anyway, I like it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Live and Learn. Ha, ha, we are trend setters! :D
DeleteI spent most of Sunday doing lesson plans. But I also did some gardening and crocheting. So it was a productive day.
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of boots purely for style. :) Sometimes I miss wearing winter clothes.
I remember the hours my mother spent, making lesson plans and correcting tests, etc. I'm glad you were able to get some gardening and crocheting in to relax.
DeleteYou'll just have to go to a cooler part of the country to have an opportunity to wear your boots and winter clothes, Nil. A winter holiday, somewhere. :)
You had a good solution to the missing button. I generally mend clothing if possible, but it might take me a while to get around to it! I did some clothes shopping today, too, and found a pair of black pants, a striped top and some sneakers. I had a $5 voucher for the store so that was good as I wanted to make sure I used it before it expired.
ReplyDeleteGood idea to take advantage of your $5 voucher, Bushlady. I have a couple of additional items to mend; maybe I'll tend to them, tomorrow.
DeleteI love the boots.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Akasha! I can't wear heels, so I was happy to find a pair that were flat.
