Crocheted Blanket |
Close Up of the Stitch |
It was another sunny, warm, and windy day, today, although the wind gusts were not as strong as they were yesterday. According to the news, yesterday's wind gusts knocked down several trees and at least one power pole. I was happy that the only things that were knocked down in my garden were some potted plants.
I hadn't planned on going to the pharmacy, today (running errands is scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays), but when they texted to let me know that a refill was ready for pick up, I decided to go to the pharmacy, especially since I didn't need to run any errands on Tuesday. While I was there, I redeemed a $5 Extra Bucks coupon and bought a 4-roll package of toilet paper that was on sale for $4.99 (according to the package, the four "mega" rolls are the equivalent of 16 regular rolls!). Then, since the dollar store is right next door, I went in there to see what they had that I might want (although I didn't actually need anything). I bought two tomato plants for $1 each. And, I went to the grocery store in the same shopping mall and bought 10 cans of wet cat food for $5.50. I almost bought a package of whole wheat bagels for myself, but put it back.
After I came home, I rested a bit and then, rather reluctantly, I might add, I got the vacuum cleaner out and vacuumed the house. This time, I didn't get an asthma attack! I also cleaned my bathroom - just the one, because the second bathroom hasn't been used at all after I cleaned it last week. Then, I watered the peach tree (it has dropped almost all the tiny peaches that were forming!), the orange tree, and the newly divided and transplanted lemon grass clumps.
I didn't do any decluttering or organizing in the spare room, today, however. Running errands tired me out! Instead, I pulled out some of the yarn to start a new project. My cousin who is visiting from Australia revealed that her daughter was expecting her first child later this year. I thought of making a baby quilt to send through my cousin, but, when I checked my fabric stash, I saw that I didn't have any fabric that was appropriate for a baby quilt, in terms of color and pattern. I am debating whether to go to the fabric store to buy some suitable fabric, but haven't decided, yet. I thought that, instead of a quilt, I could make a baby blanket with some of the yarn in my stash. A blanket would take less space than a baby quilt in my cousin's suitcase, as well. I am planning to crochet the blanket and use white yarn as it is a neutral color, suitable for either a boy or a girl, as my cousin said they didn't know the sex of the baby.
My joyful activities for the day included buying tomato plants for the garden and playing with yarn!
Today, I am grateful for:
- Another drama-free medication refill!
- No damage to the house or garden from the wind
- Daughter had an opportunity to interview for a promotion
- A sunny and warm (if windy) day
- The yarn stash

What a lovely blanket and a great way of using up leftover bits of yarn. I think it is a shell stitch. It looks very much like the stitch I used for my last blanket and works up nicely. X
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jules. Yes, either a shell stitch or a variation of it. I don't know crochet as much as I know knitting. :)
DeleteYour dollar store is different than mine. You can buy tomato plants!?
ReplyDeleteYes. They usually have a couple of stands of plants - flowers, vegetables, herbs, etc. - at the entrance to the store. Often, the vegetables are tomatoes and peppers. I figured, for $1 each, I couldn't go wrong!
DeleteI'd make a quilt, but I'm a sewer and not a knitter! If you have the yarn to make a blanket I'd do that, rather that buying fabric. That way you are using up some of your stash! Do you have fabric that is suitable for making a soft toy for the new baby?
ReplyDeleteA soft toy is a great suggestion! I shall take a look in the fabric stash. My cousin sews well, but, I don't think she knits or crochets, so, maybe the blanket is the way to go. Just to use up the yarn stash! BUT, I still might go to the fabric store, now that I have an excuse to do so! :D
DeleteI received a crocheted baby blanket for one of my sons that I used all of the time. For the reason you stated, it could pack up quite small and was easy to grab and take with me anywhere. It would take the baby from the house to the car and cover him in his car seat. It would lay on the floor for tummy time and it was a blanket for the playpen. He dragged it everywhere like Linus' blanket from the Charlie Brown comics. It washed up like a rag, and believe me, it was washed ALL the time. When he went off to Kindergarten, he kept it in his cubby for nap time. Maybe you will want to make him a quilt later on for an occasion like a birthday or Christmas, or when he moves up to a big boy bed. Just my two cents. Ha.
ReplyDeleteGreat job maintaining the schedule...and I already said, I love the flexibility in it. Have a wonderful day.
Sounds like your son's blanket was a much loved and used item, Susan. When my other cousin's daughter had a baby, that's exactly what I did - I knitted a blanket for the baby shower and, later, when he was 1 year old, I made that quilt I showed in one of my posts, last year, using fabric I had in the stash. I think I shall go with the blanket for now and make a quilt for later.
DeleteThank you! I am hoping to keep the schedule going, but I need that flexibility, too. The real challenge will be next week, when I have to report for jury duty! Not sure how tired I'll feel after I come home and if I'll be up to cleaning. But, we'll see how it goes.
Wednesday was my birthday. It was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteToday, Thursday less enjoyable. Typing this and dribbling and drooling as I do [just back from dentist and my mouth is numb!]
Happy birthday, again, Angela. I'll be singing that same song, myself, this November! :D
DeleteOh, I hope your mouth won't hurt when the numbness wears away! Rest and take it easy! I hate going to the dentist's!
Your blanket is lovely. I have either never had the dexterity or the desire (not sure which or if it is a combo of both) for knitting or crochet, and am awed by anyone who can make beautiful things so easily.
ReplyDeleteI think for a gift that has to be transported a blanket would be a much better answer than a quilt.
Thank you, Anne. I enjoy both knitting and crocheting, although I think I am better at knitting than at crocheting!
DeleteYes, I think you are right - I shall go with the blanket. It will be easier to pack and take, and won't need to match any nursery decor, etc.
Love your scrappy blanket.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy crocheting baby blankets and I look forward to seeing what you make. I'm sure it will be great.
Thank you! Yes, I remember you saying you do baby blankets for Project Linus. I will post the photos as soon as I finish the blanket. :)
DeleteWe have one just like that from the 1970’s that is bright orange! Same stitch I believe
ReplyDeleteThey were very popular in the 70s and orange was a popular color back then. :)
DeleteYour blog always inspires me to clean my cottage. You get so much housekeeping done. I gave my neighbor a crocheted baby blanket, and her little girls still play with it. They use it to make a fort. She sent me a photo, which I thought was sweet. Yesterday i looked at four houses in Ojai, and today I did a lot of weeding and housework.
ReplyDeleteActually, I am trying to get some housekeeping done! Especially now, that I am retired. I still have a lot more to do before I get the place looking how I want it to look, but, I am making some progress.
DeleteIt's nice when things you make and give are appreciated and used, isn't it? How nice to know that your neighbor's little girls still play with the blanket you made!
Are you looking to buy a house and move to Ojai? I know you said you liked that area. If so, I hope you find a house you like. Sounds like you had a busy day, today. Now who is doing housework? :)
I love this blanket, looks so incredibly pretty ☺
ReplyDeleteThank you, Natalia. Thank you, too, for stopping by and leaving a comment.
Deletelovely scrappy blanket...
ReplyDeletehave a great day
Thank you. Hope you have a good day, too.
Delete❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteVery pretty quilt. A baby quilt would be nice and cozy! Andrea
ReplyDeleteThank you, Andrea. I think I will go with the baby blanket - I can use yarn I have on hand and it won't be as bulky for my cousin to take in her suitcase. :)
DeleteI like to crochet (very basic treble design) and make blankets but they don't look as good as this pattern. I love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Eloise. Sometimes, I think I should crochet more than I do, but I seem to knit more than crochet. The baby blanket I am making now is crochet, though.
