Today's Grocery Haul |
I did part 2 of this week's grocery shopping this afternoon. Today's shopping, too, was to take advantage of sales to stock up. I've included the few non-grocery items I bought, too, because I know some of you include these items in your grocery budget. I generally include only food items in my grocery budget; toiletries, household products, and pet food are all different categories in my budget. I should have been an accountant!

So, deduct the $5 for the toothpaste and toothbrush (toiletries) and the $4.14 for the tuna (pet food) and the $.45 tax on the toiletries from the total and the cost of today's groceries comes to $16.47.
I bought:
12 boxes of pasta, $.49@ = $5.88
3 cans of chicken broth (fat free/reduced salt), $.49@ = $1.47
3 cans of cream of chicken, $.49@ = $1.47
2 packets frozen bread dough (3 loaves each), $2.99@ = $5.98
1 container of salt = $.79
bananas, @ $.39/lb = $.42
yams, @ $.50/lb = $.46
Total = $16.47
Grocery spending to date: $9.36 + $29.48 + $16.47 = $55.31
The problem with stocking up is that it can really take a big chunk of the budget!
I cooked the beef and the chicken I bought yesterday; I had some of the beef for tonight's dinner and I will keep some of it in the fridge for the week and freeze the rest. I'll portion out the chicken and freeze that, too.

Today, I had brunch, instead of breakfast and lunch: a scrambled egg with a slice of turkey cold cuts mixed in, a slice of toast, a slice of papaya, and orange juice. I went grocery shopping after I ate my brunch.
Later in the evening, I had a cup of tea and a snack of an apple and cheese:

For dinner, I had some of the beef steak (cooked with onions), with broccoli and corn:

I was too full for dessert immediately after dinner, but I'll probably eat some grapes before I take my last dose of antibiotics for the day and go to sleep. It isn't difficult for me to get my daily servings of fruit, I love fruit, but vegetables are a different matter! Since the corn is considered as a starch for diabetics, the broccoli is my only serving of veggies for today. I guess I should have eaten a salad for my tea-time snack, instead of the apple. I shall strive to do better, tomorrow. :)
Anyone else having a difficult time getting all the recommended servings of veggies each day?
I know it's not relevant but I really, really love your placemats. As for getting my recommended veggies - not unless chocolate counts lol! Sybil xxx
ReplyDeleteSybil, thank you, glad you like them. I sewed the placemats with fabric a neighbor gave me. I made them so that they are reversible and I could use either side as the "right" side. I even did a blog post about making them: http://www.bless2cents.blogspot.com/2015/06/sunday-more-sewing-down-stash.html.
DeleteAs for being able to count chocolate - I like your way of thinking! After all, the cocoa bean comes from a plant! :D

DeleteOh BLess, I too love fruit and have no problem eating them.. But really don't get the veggies in very well. I had rather have the starches.ha
ReplyDeleteMe, too, Judy - love the starches (not to mention the sweets!) But this is my month of grace to get my body ready for the rigors of chemotherapy. So, I really need to try and eat a better balanced, more nutritious diet.

ReplyDeleteI love kale, but it always seems to be more of a bother to prepare than broccoli or frozen peas. Kale is good with a little grated raw ginger sprinkled on it while cooking.

Bushlady, when I was a little girl and couldn't swallow big pills, my father, who was a doctor, would crush the pills, put them in the middle of a piece of softened chocolate (pretty easy to have softened chocolate when you live in a tropical country!), and give to me to eat! It was an easy way to get me to take medicines! :)
DeleteWe shred the kale and cook it with coconut and turmeric and other spices in what is called a "mallung", but then, the problem is, I don't much care for mallung, in the first place. :p
I don't know of any good ways to disguise dark vegetables that are so nutritious. Maybe you could coat them in chocolate, LOL!

Now that is a very good suggestion! They do dip fruit in chocolate, don't they? Wonder how chocolate dipped kale will be? ;)
