Road Trip: Part 2 - Returning Home

Rest Area
Today, daughter and I set out on the second part of our road trip - the return trip home.

First, I had daughter run down to the bakery around the corner to buy some croissants.  I made sandwiches with them, with slices of roast chicken breast, to take with us for our lunch.  The rest of the roast chicken was frozen for daughter to have when she goes back at the end of the month.

Then, we packed the car with all the things we needed to bring back, closed up her apartment, and set off on our return trip home.  Just before we got on the freeway, we stopped to put gas to the car ($2.75/gal.); it takes 3/4 tank of gas each way.  I would have preferred to have left a bit earlier, but things took time and it was 10:30 a.m. when we left.  We encountered the tail end of the morning rush hour traffic, but the traffic eased up once we left the more built up areas.

Around 12:30 p.m. we pulled into one of the rest areas to have our lunch of croissant sandwiches and fruit and to use the rest rooms.  Once again, it was our only rest stop.

It was a warm day, with temperatures in the 90s for the most part.  At one point in the afternoon, the temperature reached 100F and I asked daughter to try and take a picture, but she really couldn't focus the camera from the passenger seat.  One of the reasons why I prefer to start out very early in the morning is to avoid having to travel in the heat of the afternoon, especially in the summer.  It's quite common to see cars overheating and pulling off to the side.

But we made good time and got home, without incident, by 4:30 p.m.  My neighbor had collected my mail for me and brought it over; I still have to look through it, though.  Daughter unpacked her stuff right away, but I rested a bit (I did all the driving, again) and haven't unpacked, yet.  Later, daughter got me the fast food hamburger I had been craving since a couple of weeks ago!  I had that for my dinner and the craving has been satisfied!  One of my cousins called to check if I had reached home safely and we chatted a bit.  I am off to unpack, now.

Tomorrow's To Do list:

- Go for blood test in the morning
- Put gas to the car
- Do office work
- Do a load of laundry
- Clean out the fridge
- Have daughter clean the litter boxes
- Water the garden
- Go through the mail

Today, I am grateful for:

- A safe, incident-free return trip home.
- A good road trip!
- Pleasant rest areas in which to stop and have a picnic lunch
- My neighbor collecting my mail for me
- Being home, again!

Have you been on a road trip, lately?

    1. I was a little tired, yesterday. So, took it easy and rested. A nice, hot shower helped, too, as well as a good night's sleep. I feel fine this morning. I agree; it was definitely worth the trip!

  2. Glad you made it back alright :)

I had been hoping to drive to Vermont with my daughter this summer but since she'll be in California for 95% of the summer, that plan has been scratched. How far does a drive have to be to qualify as a road trip? My next road trip will probably to one of our state parks or gardens in Florida, there are a couple of them that are about 2 hours away that I would like to visit. I probably won't drive much farther than that.

    1. I think just about any fairly long drive that's not a routine commute can qualify as a road trip. :)

  3. A nice road trip! Too bad you couldn't take the scenic route on your way home. But as you mentioned, it's a much longer route. Your daughter's purple sari was so pretty!

    1. Yes, the scenic route would have been a nice option, but it's about a 10 hr. drive; longer with stops en route. A bit too long and tiring for us.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Cravings are funny, aren't they? It didn't taste quite as good as I remembered, but I was expecting that, since I can't taste salt/cheese. But it tasted better than I expected. :)
