This Week's Groceries |
Daughter went grocery shopping this afternoon. She bought:
2 packages of coffee @ $5.99 = 11.98
1 can baked beans = $1.99
1 - 8 ct. hamburger buns = $.87
1 Half & Half = $2.59
3 corn on the cob @ $.33 = $.99
2+ lb. bananas @ $.69/lb = $1.48
1 cucumber = $.50
1 8oz. package ham cold cuts = $2.00
2 14oz. smoked sausages @ $2.50 = $5.00
1 deli roast chicken = $7.99 (+ $.72 tax)
She also bought a bag of cat food for $9.99 + $.90 tax, but I don't include it in the grocery budget.
Today's grocery total came to $36.11. There was also $1.59 for a loaf of French bread that we bought last week.
This Week's Receipt |
The deli roast chicken isn't really a very frugal choice, as it is a very small chicken (under 2 lb.!) and whole roasting chickens are on sale for $.99/lb. this week. However, one of my aunts called this afternoon, wanting to visit on Saturday, but since daughter has planned to go out with friends on Saturday, I asked aunt and cousin to come tonight, instead. So I told daughter to buy an already roasted chicken for dinner, since I don't have time to thaw something and cook. I'll make some rice (daughter's preference), mashed potatoes (my preference), broccoli, and open the can of baked beans and that will be a nice dinner, I think. Fresh fruit for dessert.
May grocery spending total to date: $51.51 + $17.08 + $36.11 + $1.59 = $106.29
Amount left in May grocery budget: $150 - $106.29 = $43.71
You're doing very well with your budget! Aldi charged me $1.99 for 4 ears of corn and I see that Publix (which is significantly more expensive than Aldi) had it on sale for 5 ears for $2 so Aldi isn't always the cheapest. Hopefully we'll be able to get 8 ears for $2 soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you Nathalie. I might have daughter do one more grocery trip for me before she returns to Berkeley at the end of the month.
DeleteThere was a grocery store called the Piggly Wiggly when I was in Florida; I loved that name! Do they still have stores by that name?
LOL, I used to love driving by Piggly Wiggly supermarkets back when I first got here because I would giggle like crazy! I haven't seen one in years but I had heard they still survived in other Southern states, not sure if it's true. Update: I looked them up and they still have 600 stores, but in Florida they seem to be mostly in the Northeast part of the state, it sounds like. It's hard to tell because I haven't heard of most of the towns they're located in. http://www.pigglywiggly.com/
DeleteThe funniest thing is one day, back in the early 90s, a "Hoggly Woggly" mom-and-pop supermarket! I wonder how long they were able to operate under that name, lol.
Hmm, part of my comment was eaten by the internet so it doesn't make much sense! I was saying that back in the early 90s a friend and I drove to Panama City by taking the back roads and in a tiny town, we passed a "Hoggly Woggly" mom and pop supermarket. We laughed so hard because Piggly Wiggly is already enough of a funny name for a supermarket, but Hoggly Woggly really took the cake!
DeleteToo funny! :D
Deletetooo funny...Hoggly Woggly..lol
DeleteWe have a Piggly Wiggly. I have seen it for so long, I never think anything about it.ha
I love these imaginative names. There was a Red Owl grocery store in Wisconsin when I was there; my mother kept calling it the Grey Owl because she said owls weren't red!
DeleteThe most recent roast chicken I bought from the deli was a nice size. It gave us 3 dinners for 2, 2 lunches for 2 and soup for 3 servings!
ReplyDeleteBushlady
Now that's what I call a "rubber chicken"! :D You really stretched that chicken!
DeleteYesterday's chicken was enjoyed by the 4 of us and there is still half the chicken left! I am planning to have some for my dinner tonight, with the leftover mashed potatoes and broccoli. I'll keep a record of how many meals it provided!
Good prices on your groceries.
ReplyDeleteThe roast chickens are higher than cooking your own..But.. It is so nice to be able to pick them up. for those unexpected times , we need them.. Well worth the $7.. Have a great weekend.
Thank you, Judy. A bit of a splurge, but you pay for the convenience and that's OK on occasion.
