| May 18 Groceries |
I had an order of groceries delivered on Monday. .
I needed half and half for my daughter's coffee , a loaf of bread, some chicken, some vegetables, ginger and garlic for the chutney I am planning to make, and I wanted to stock up on rice. I also wanted bottled water that was on sale, but, apparently, they were out of stock. So, that will have to wait for another time. Also, the store was out of the half gallon of half and half I had ordered and out of the quart size I had listed as a substitute; instead, I was asked if a pint size would do and I said yes. We will definitely have to buy more half and half before the end of the week, though. Without the bottled water, everything I bought was the regular price; that's the first time in a long time that has happened.
Here's the receipt:
Order Summary
Item Details
10 Items
Other Fees
$0.60
My total came to: $37.37
My May grocery budget is $250 + $19.09 carried forward from April = $269.09
I spent $150 of that at the Sri Lankan store on the groceries such as red lentils, mung beans, chick peas, barley, curry powder, tea, chili for chutney making, etc.
Which left me with $119.09 in the May grocery for the rest of the month.
Balance remaining in the budget after Monday's grocery delivery:
$269.09 - $150 - $37.37 = $81.72
I will be stocking up on a few things, including bottled water, with the balance remaining in the May grocery budget.
As always, I am grateful for:
- The availability of groceries
- Daughter's gift of the membership with enables me to get groceries delivered
- Freezers and refrigerators that enable me to store groceries for longer periods of time
- Electricity to run the freezer and fridge
- Being able to stock up
How are you coming along with your grocery shopping?
We had tuna salad sandwiches for brunch on Monday; for dinner, we had rice, chicken curry, sauteed curried green beans, peach chutney, and peach pie for dessert.

Can you believe we are past halfway through May? Your remaining budget won't have to stretch too far!
ReplyDeleteYes, I should be able to make the remaining budget stretch for the rest of the month! :) I would like to use $50 of the remaining budget to stock up on some meat or fish.
DeleteWhenever I do a weekly shop, I think of you, Bless, and remind myself how lucky I am for the availability of groceries, and for having the ability to buy them. Shopping for groceries can sometimes feel like a chore, but I try not to take it for granted.
ReplyDeleteI have all my meals planned for the rest of this week, and my fridge is nice and full. Xx
Thank you, Jules! So nice of you to think of me when you shop for your groceries! Yes, we are blessed to have a variety of groceries and be able to buy them.
DeleteWell done with having your meals planned for the week! And what a blessing to have a fridge that is nice and full, too. :)
You've got some great ingredients there. It must be getting tough when you can't get a bargain as you have had some wonderful hauls in the past.
ReplyDeleteAre you going to be making peach chutney? My mother sometimes made it if we got cheap peaches, and I always loved it.
Thank you, Lyssa. Yes, I usually try to buy the sale items, but, this time, everything I bought was regular priced. Unfortunately, I know that these regular prices are going to be the new "sale" prices in the not too distant future. So, I am not holding out for basic produce to go on sale to buy them.
DeleteYes, peach chutney is in the plans! Today, we made peach jam.
I'm trying to do better shopping sales and working menus around them. I seem to be doing better that way.
ReplyDeleteIt's what I do, too, Sharon. I buy what's on sale and plan my meals around them (or stick them in the freezer for another time). I've heard that there are online sites where one can put in the ingredients you have and find recipes for them (haven't actually tried those, myself).
DeleteI always buy what is on sale. I have been doing it for so long , it is just second nature to me.
ReplyDeleteI try to do the same, Anne, and I try to stock up on the sale items to see me through until the next time it goes on sale. But, there are a few things I'll buy even if it is not on sale, such as my daughter's half & half, although, today, we did discuss what would be a good alternative if half & half becomes unavailable.
DeleteI buy things on sale and purchase several items at a time so that I can stock up and save money at the same time.
ReplyDeleteIt's the best way to shop, Linda, if one wants to keep costs down. Shop the sales and stock up! :)
