I did the month's first grocery shopping on August 1st, choosing to do an order and pick up. I selected a pick up slot of 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., but, I received a text around 6:00 p.m. that my order was filled, followed shortly by a phone call from Rose at the pick up department letting me know that their department was closing at 7:00 p.m. that evening and they wanted to make sure I had plenty of time to pick up my groceries before they closed.
So, I quickly closed up the house and left to pick up the groceries before my allotted time. They brought my groceries to the car and put everything in the trunk as usual, except for the bag with the milk and half-and-half, which I requested to be placed in the passenger seat (I had the a/c on in the car as it was a warm day). I thought that the person placing the items in the car placed more bags that I would have expected given the size of my order, but, sometimes they pack the items separately and I just assumed that that's what they did.
My phone rang again, while I was on my way home and I let it go to voicemail. Once I got home, I checked the message and it was Rose at the grocery store, calling to let me know that they had placed some extra items in my car, but, I was not required to return them to the store and I could either keep them or toss them and if I had any questions, to call the store. So, I called the store and spoke with Rose and she basically told me the same thing. They had placed someone else's items in my car, but, she was not going to make me drive back; I could keep the items or toss them. I verified that I would not be charged for the additional items if I decided to keep them. I had no idea what they were, though, because I had just pulled into my garage and not unpacked anything.
By then, M had arrived to tend to the garden, so I related what had just taken place to him and took my groceries inside.
I bought:
Order Summary
Item Details
21 Items
Other Fees
$0.50
I spent: $38.17.
In addition, I received:
- 3 x 2 lb. bags of broccoli florets (@ $6.00)
- 3 x 12 oz. packages of bacon (@$5.99)
- 2 x 12 oz. bags of dried cranberries (@$4.79)
- 1x 11 oz. container mayonnaise (@$4.49)
- 1x 10 oz. container of natural sunflower seed kernels (@$3.49)
-1 "jumbo" red onion (@$1.49/lb. and the one I received was huge; I assume it would have come to about $1)
From the items, I am assuming that someone was planning to make a big broccoli salad! I hope they received their order once the store realized that they had given the items to me! I went on the store website, later, to see how much these additional items came to and it came to about $55 depending how much the onion might have weighed
I gave one bag of broccoli florets to M and offered one to my neighbor S (she wasn't home when I called so I'll give it to her later today). I froze the bacon and we will enjoy them, along with the other items over the upcoming weeks. What a blessing to receive free groceries!
With my daughter being home, I am going to increase my grocery budget to $250 per month, or $125 per person. Primarily because, despite campaign promises to the contrary, grocery prices have increased and I expect them to continue to increase. I am able to increase my grocery budget by reducing what I put into savings.
I am grateful for:
- Being blessed with free groceries at the expense of the store's mistake
- Being able to share some of that with friends and neighbors
- The availability of groceries
- Being able to increase my grocery budget
- The blessing of having enough food to eat
that was such good news for you getting those extras for nothing. Our son does the same as you and one time they put in 3 extra tubs of Becel margarine, so he gave us two of the tubs as that is a brand we use. I agree we are blessed when we have enough food to eat.
ReplyDeleteHi Gill, yes, it was good to receive the extra groceries and I am happy I am able to share some of the extras. Once before, this same grocery store gave me three boxes of croissants when I ordered only one and I shared them, too. That's nice of your son to share the extra margarine with you. :)
DeleteNow I want broccoli salad. :)
ReplyDeleteYou might have to make some, June. :)
DeleteThis makes me want broccoli salad also!
ReplyDeleteMaybe add it to your meal plan?
DeleteThe extra goceries were a blessing, and it was very kind of you to share. I need to go shopping later today, but I'm completely out of any routine at the moment, which means that I find meal planning more of a challenge :)
ReplyDeleteThe extra groceries were definitely a blessing and I was happy to be able to share. I hope you are able to put together some easy meal plan options based on what you buy when you grocery shop, Jules. I haven't made a meal plan yet, this week, myself.
DeleteThat turned out to be a very satisfying shopping trip. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt did, didn't it? :)
DeleteI've never made broccoli salad but the ingredients in the mistake bag sound good. I can imagine a certain kitty giving a thumbs up or at least a paws up for the tuna cans!
ReplyDeleteI haven't made broccoli salad, myself, Bushlady, but, I have been enjoying snacking on the dried cranberries and the sunflower seeds. I splurged a bit and bought Dancer's favorite tuna and he's been enjoying that (he's off his canned cat food, again).
DeleteIt looks like you did very well in your grocery shopping, you got some good deals! Here in Montreal, Canada, sandwich bread is $3 to $4, depending on the type! Some may be even more than that, but it will be a fancier one or something like that. Here we use the metric system (well, it is not what I grew up with...I am 68)...I am assuming that one half gallon is 2 liters? (milk). I think a pint is half a liter. Gee, I hate the conversions! LOL! I believe our 2 liter of homogenized milk is $4 to $5, not 100% certain, because I usually buy the 2%.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, Canadian prices will definitely differ from the U.S. prices.
Thank you so much for sharing. :)
Thank you, Linda. I was pleased with my grocery shopping. I buy the store brand white sandwich bread which is really the cheapest bread. Other bread tend to be priced higher.
DeleteThe US gallon is legally defined as 231 cubic inches or 3.785 liters. So, half a gallon would be 1.89 liters. The US gallon is a little smaller than the Imperial gallon and our pints have 16 fl.oz.and not 20 fl.oz.; the US pint is a little less than half a liter at 0.473 liters. A gallon of store brand milk (at the store where I tend to buy my milk) is $3.99, whether it is whole milk, 2% or 1%. I usually buy 1/2 gal. because I can't finish a whole gallon before it goes off.
That was a nice unexpected windfall. Luckily it was things you like/can use. Had it been nappies and dog food, or a crate of wine, that might have been a different matter! Then again at least wine could have served as Christmas gifts or whatever. I have never heard of broccoli salad but I would try it if the ingredients fell into my lap! (Not sure about the cranberries in that combination, though.)
ReplyDeleteElla
It really was a nice windfall. I will admit to wondering what I had received, before I opened the bag! If the items were anything I couldn't use, I would have offered them to neighbors or friends. But, I was happy that the items received were things I could use. I haven't tried making broccoli salad, myself, but, I did cook one of the packets of bacon the other day and I might just make a small salad just to try it.
