July Grocery Shopping Part 1 and Other Happenings

Dancer Looking Pensive

Dancer's 17th birthday came and went, earlier this month.  He has decided he likes his canned cat food, after all, as long as it is the chicken pate.  I am relieved he is eating his food, again.

On Thursday, I had an appointment with my tax accountant in the afternoon.  Afterwards, I went into the Hispanic grocery store located in the same shopping center because they had a sale on canned condensed milk ($1.99@) and I wanted to stock up (I bought 6 cans).  I also bought two bolillo bread rolls (2/$1.00
) and some Manzano bananas (also known as apple bananas) for a treat.  They were more expensive than the regular bananas at $1.79/lb.., but, they remind me of a type of banana called "kolikuttu" that I grew up eating.

Manzano Bananas

My grocery bill came to $14.82.

My July grocery budget is $100 - $40 overspent in June = $60
I have approximately $45 left in my July grocery budget.  I am determined to stick to that amount, too.
My grocery budget will be increased once daughter comes home and I am fully prepared to do that.

On Friday, I paid some bills, tended to the garden with M (we planted okra and he watered the garden) and did a few things around the house.

Plans for Saturday include buying (or making) three sympathy cards to send to family in Australia (one of my cousins passed away earlier this week), doing a load of laundry, and doing some housework.  I also plan to catch up on my blog reading!

I am grateful for:
- Everyone's kind comments on my previous blog post
- M's help with the garden
- Dancer has started to eat his canned cat food, again
- Being able to pay my bills
- The internet

Joyful activities have included planting more vegetables in the garden, watching online videos, and relaxing.

What are your plans for the weekend?

  3. Glad to read that Dancer is eating his food again. My cat has decided that all she'll eat is fancy feast chicken mousse pate. For now, eventually she'll switch to something else. I'm impressed that you can manage on such a small grocery budget! You do shop some very good deals.

    1. Thank you, Celie. Ooh, I think Dancer might like that chicken mousse pate, too! He is on the regular chicken pate by the same company.
I think I can manage on the much reduced grocery budget this month because I can use up some of the things I have in the pantry and freezer. I will definitely need to increase my grocery budget once my daughter comes home. But, that's fine and I'm prepared to do that.

    3. Thank you, Celie. I shall buy one to try and then, if he likes them, order more. Today, he ate the fancy feast chicken pate and turned his nose up at the beef pate.

  4. Dancer is very handsome with his markings and his brown nose. Wish him a happy birthday from me! I see your special bananas come from Costa Rica. Just lately, all our regular bananas are coming from Guatemala.

    1. Dancer says thank you for the birthday wishes and for saying he's handsome. :D
Yes, these particular bananas are from Costa Rica and I'm sure that added to their cost. But, I have had a couple of the bananas, already, and they are so tasty.

  5. I'm glad Dancer is eating again. Those bananas look very nice. I used to drink Avocado juice in Bali made with condensed milk and water - so tasty!

    1. Thank you, Kezzie. Dancer has gone from 16 lbs. a few years ago to a low of 7+ lb. when he was weighed last month. Partly due to his thyroid issues that we are currently treating. So, when he refuses to eat, I worry.
      The bananas are delicious.
Ooh, we tend to make a pudding with avocados, mashed with condensed milk and sugar. Most delicious. In fact, I tend to view avocados as a fruit and don't much care for them in salads or on toast, etc.

    1. The bananas are very tasty. Thank you; I plan to stick to this month's budget. I will need to buy some chicken or meat to cook towards the end of the month, but, otherwise, I don't need much.

  10. Happy Birthday, Dancer!
I look forward to seeing how you stretch your budget once it increases to two folks instead of one. I need to just stop going to the store unless we actually need something. My freezer is overflowing.

I am going to increase my grocery budget once my daughter comes home. It's hard not to shop for those bargains, isn't it?
