I put in a grocery order on Thursday afternoon and picked it up in the evening.
I needed bread because I had used up the last two slices of bread in the morning, for my brunch. I also wanted more vinegar, sugar, garlic, and ginger for more chutney making now that the tomatoes are ripening.
In addition, the store was having some good deals on a couple of items I wanted, including beef with boneless beef chuck roast on sale for $3.99/lb. I had stopped buying beef (other than ground beef when it was on sale for $3.99/lb.) for the past couple of years because the prices had gone up so much (the regular price on the chuck roast was $8.99/lb., per the receipt). Trimmed tri tip roast was on sale for $5.99/lb. last week and I thought that was still too expensive. This week, however, chuck roast was on sale for $3.99/lb. and since I've been paying that price for ground beef, I decided it was a good price for beef. I ordered two packages of beef and I will cook them in two different ways.
I bought:
1.74 lb. chuck roast @ $3.99/lb. = $6.94
1.7 lb. chuck roast @ $3.99/lb. = $6.78
1 doz. large eggs = $2.99
1/2 gal. milk, with digital coupon = $1.69
1 container (32 oz.) plain yogurt (reg. price) = $4.39
1 Loaf white sliced bread (I ordered store brand, but they were out of it and substituted a loaf of Wonder Bread which sells for $4.29 per the store website, for the price of the store brand) = $1.79
1 cucumber = $0.79
2 pieces ginger root (0.35 lb. @ $1.99/lb.) = $0.70
5 bulbs garlic = $1.99
1 bottle (64 fl. oz.) cranberry juice cocktail, with coupon (reg. price $3.69) = $3.04 + $0.10 deposit fee
(CRV - California redemption value)
1 gal. distilled white vinegar = $3.99
10 lb. white granulated sugar = $7.99
Pepsi, 2 x 6 packs @ $2.99 (reg. price $5.49@) = $5.98 + $0.60 CRV + $0.50 tax
1 box (16 oz.) pound cake mix, reg. price $4.99, free with coupon! = $0
Total spent = $45.26
According to the receipt, the original value of the items I bought was $78.70. I will take their word for it!
My July grocery budget is $100 (+ $64.38 carried over from May, if needed)
I spent $45.26
Balance left in the July budget = $100 - $45.26 = $54.74
Ricky, the same person who brought the groceries to my car last time (when the loaf of bread was left out), brought the groceries to the car today. When I got home, there was a phone call from an unfamiliar number on my cell phone, but, I didn't answer it, because I didn't know who was calling and I was wary that it might be a spam call. So, I let it go to voice mail. I put away the groceries (the loaf of bread was there!) and then, I realized, my jug of vinegar and the bottles of soda were missing! Not again! This was getting annoying.
So, I called the store and spoke to someone named Steve and asked to be transferred to the pick up department. My call was transferred and someone picked up the phone and said the store name, so I started to explain that part of my order had been left out. The young woman at the other end couldn't understand what I was saying and I was getting a bit frustrated. Turned out that I had been transferred to the bakery department! No wonder the young woman didn't know what I was talking about! I asked her to transfer me to the pick up department, but, she hung up on me! She was probably thinking I was a crazy woman!
So, I called the store again and Steve answered again and I said I had been transferred to the bakery department, but, I wanted the pick up department! I was transferred again and this time, it was to the pick up department and Ricky answered the phone. He apologized and said he had called my cell phone and left a message that items had been mistakenly left out. I said I hadn't checked the message because I didn't recognize the number - it wasn't the store number. No, he had called from his personal phone. He was very apologetic about it and said I could come over then or tomorrow morning if that's more convenient. Well, I figured I might as well go over right away and get it over with. It's not that the store is very far, it's just the hassle of closing up the house and driving over, again. I asked him if I had to go into the store again, as last time, I couldn't get through to the pick up department once I was at the parking lot. He said I could call him on his phone and he'll bring the items to the car for me.
So, I went back to the store. I was no longer irritated that I had to go back a second time, again. Ricky is fairly new, I think, and he's probably trying his best. It was probably an honest mistake. Picking up in the early evening is probably not the best time of the day, anyway, as they are probably quite busy. I shall switch back to morning or early afternoon pick ups.
Anyway, once I got to the store parking lot, I called Ricky on his phone and he brought the items out and apologized again. I told him we have to stop meeting like this, otherwise people might notice and start talking. I don't think he expected me to joke about it, because he looked startled at first and then, burst out laughing. He looked very relieved that I was not angry; I think I might have made another new friend!
Anyway, I now have my groceries and am set for at least another two weeks.
By the time I came home, I didn't feel like cooking dinner (brunch had been French toast and bacon). The sausages I had taken out to thaw in the fridge will keep another day. I opened a can of tuna, gave Dancer a spoonful, and made tuna salad with the rest. Tuna salad sandwich for dinner with yogurt for dessert. Grapes and almonds for snacks. There's leftover tuna salad for brunch, tomorrow.
Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to order groceries on line
- Same day pick up only a couple of hours later
- Safe drives to the store and back, twice
- Being able to take advantage of sales
- Working appliances and electricity to run them
Thursday's joyful activity was enjoying a long phone chat with one of my cousins in Sri Lanka. She had tried to call me earlier and had left a message asking me to call her. I completely forgot the 12 hour time difference and called her at what was 5:00 a.m. her time! She was very gracious about being woken up by my phone call!
Have you grocery shopped in July, yet? Are you finding good sales?
I had to look up what chuck roast is called here in the UK and it's braising steak, I'm glad you got a good price for it. That's good you were sympathetic to Rick's honest mistake and the fact he used his personal phone to call you says something about him.
ReplyDeleteMy grocery order will be delivered this morning and Tilly's dog food was on offer so I have stocked up with that. It's expensive because I spoil her so a £1 off per pack was an offer too good to miss. I hope Dancer is doing OK on his new higher dose medication.
Yes, chuck roast and chuck steak are cut from the shoulder muscle and needs long, slow cooking to be tender. It is often used to make pot roast.
DeleteI was irritated at first that I had to go back again to collect the rest of the groceries, but, poor Ricky was sincerely apologetic and I didn't want to give him a hard time. This is still a difficult time for us all and we need to remember that and be appreciative of what others do.
Oh, I hope you receive all the items you ordered, Eileen, and how nice to have Tilly's dog food on offer so you can stock up! We all need to take advantage of those sales and offers, don't we?
Dancer seems to be doing OK. I'll find out for sure when I take him in, next, for a check up.
I think you were very patient with Rick - and the outcome is all good. I'm NOT making chutney this year. Still plenty left from last year! I was very amused about the Sri Lankan phone call (my dad did that once, to his brother in Australia. Uncle was not amused, woken at 3am by a call from England, he assumed it was bad news!!!)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angela. I was a bit annoyed at first, but, we all make mistakes. He did what he could to make amends by calling me and apologizing. I had the choice to either continue to be annoyed and be remembered as the grumpy old woman or make a joke and be remembered as the nice old woman. I'd rather be remembered as the nice old woman. :D
DeleteMy daughter and I go through chutney at a rapid pace. At least a 16 oz. jar a month. So, 24 jars a year for the two of us and more if I want to give as gifts. :)
I need to be more aware of time differences when I call people! Your poor uncle; hope he recovered from that rude awakening in the wee hours of the morning!
Oh dear what a bother about the missing grocery items, but as you say Ricky is probably learning the ropes & he did seem genuinely sorry for the mixup. I think many grocery stores are at some of their busiest times is around 4:30-5:30 as many people are rushing out of the office to get a few things & get home. How lovely that your cousin was willing to wake up & chat. Blessings every where for you :)
ReplyDeleteIt was a bit of a bother to go back to the store, Mary-Lou, but, it worked out OK. It was one of those things - the store was probably busy and the staff doing the pick up services were probably rushing around. Ricky said there was some confusion - maybe ordered got mixed up. I was annoyed, but, his apology went a long way and anyway, I had the choice to continue to scowl or make a joke and lighten the mood. I chose the latter. :)
DeleteMy cousin assured me that it was fine, that she normally gets up around 5:00 a.m., anyway (I didn't believe her for a minute! :D) But, it was good to catch up with her. She's one of the few cousins from my mother's side that I still address as "older sister", rather than by name; the one time I didn't, on her last visit to Los Angeles, she told me that she was very disappointed that I didn't call her "older sister", so I switched back to calling her older sister. :D
It's so good that you were able to turn an irritating situation around. I know you made Ricky's day. My good find for the week was a dozen eggs for 92 cents.
ReplyDeleteThank you, June. Yes, I'm glad I was able to turn it around. I could have been yet another angry customer, but, I chose not to be. Ricky looked much happier when he wished me a good weekend and waved me off. :)
DeleteOoh, you found a great bargain on those eggs! Did you stock up?
Poor you and poor Ricky. What a difference it makes when you can be reasonable and make a joke. He will try harder next time, I'm sure! You will become a favourite customer for not getting mad at him.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was a bit annoying to me and, I'm sure, upsetting for Ricky, but, I was glad that I could make a joke about it and I know it cheered him up. I was thinking of that saying, we can't control what happens, but, we can control our reactions to it (after a short cooling off period). I think he'll be extra careful, next time, to make sure all my items are packed in the car! :)
DeleteI'm sure he was relieved that you were patient. I notice that the younger generation seems to feel it's normal to have to make several attempts for something to work. They are so computer oriented. I'm glad you got your grocery items. You are doing so well, staying on your grocery budget.
ReplyDeleteI am just thankful that the stores still offer this service, that I can order online and pick up a couple of hours later, without the need to pay fees (provided I buy a minimum dollar amount). I need to focus on that and accept that there will be some glitches along the way. At least the service is still available! Our Covid testing positivity rate has gone up above 6% for the second week in a row. I would rather return to the store a couple of times, if needed, to actually going in and shopping in person!
DeleteThank you! I am very glad that I am keeping to my budget. :)
Hope you are doing well, too. :)
I have just returned home from my trip. I spent the last four days with a couple of friends at a cabin in a national forest. It was lovely. No internet, so I read a little using my phone service but couldn't get enough signal to comment. I'm glad to be home and my cat is all over me! I think she missed me. You were very understanding of Ricky's mistake. It was kind of you. This trip drive was long (9.5 hrs home!), a lot of construction and traffic. Many drivers seemed angry and stressed, and not very nice. I decided that I need to be kinder to others, even those that frustrate me. The blessings flow from kindness.
ReplyDeleteWelcome home, Celie! I'm sure your little kitty missed you! How lovely to spend some time with friends in a cabin in a national forest! Too bad the drive home was so long and not very pleasant due to traffic and construction, etc. Yes, everyone seems to be so stressed and at the point of snapping.
DeleteI was a little irritated that I had to return to the store, but, Ricky was very apologetic and after a minute or two of reflecting, I realized that I was still fortunate that he was doing that job, even if he made a couple of mistakes, because it allowed me to pick up my groceries without having to shop in person. And a smile and a kind word or a joke goes a long way, doesn't it?
Glad all ended up well in the end!
ReplyDeleteEgg prices here have gone down and are almost back to 'normal' again. Other things are still quite expensive, though there are some good sales. I think some places just haven't bothered to put prices down and instead run regular 'sale prices'.
Hope you have a good weekend!
Thank you, Sharon.
DeleteYes, the prices of most things are still on the high side; one just has to take advantage of what sales there might be.
There's always some adventure going on in your life, Bless. lol
ReplyDeleteI'm glad everything worked out and you got your soda and vinegar.
I'm sure Ricky appreciated your pleasantness about the whole thing.
I know it's a small thing but the price of vinegar has really gotten high.
I bought white vinegar this week too and it was $3.29 for 64 oz - so that's 1/2 gallon. That's crazy. Plain white vinegar used to be one of the cheapest things around. Not anymore. Everything is dollars instead of cents.
Ha, ha, never a dull moment, is there? :D Yes, everything ended well, thank goodness! I'll probably tease Ricky the next time he brings my groceries to the car and ask him if he was sure that everything was included! :D
DeleteYes, the price of vinegar has gone up! At this store, 64 oz. vinegar was $2.99 and the gallon was $3.99, so I bought the gallon and got double for $1 more. I use vinegar to clean in addition to making chutney, etc. Maybe we will have to start making our own vinegar like the pioneers used to!
I'm glad the situation was resolved in the end. I'm not sure I would have remained as calm as you did. Xx
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jules. I was a bit annoyed at first, but, I had time to cool off before I went to collect the items. :)
DeleteAll's well that ends well! I wouldn't get annoyed about something like that either. Easy mistake to make. I would only get annoyed if the staff member was rude and unapologetic. Ricky seems to have a good attitude and good manners, so he will find customers more receptive to him and his job will be easier and more enjoyable in the long run, as you have proved.
ReplyDeleteIt was annoying, initially, to discover that items were missing, yet again, but, his apology went a long way to soothe my irritation. I know he was trying his best. And, really, going back to collect the last few items was not a hardship, at all. Especially since I got to enjoy some air conditioning during the drive! :D
