| The Front Garden in June, 2023 |
I tried to take some photos of the garden, yesterday, but, the afternoon sun was very bright and the photos didn't turn out well, at all, and I tried again, today. Today's photos aren't that good, either, but, they'll have to do! I need to try to remember to take pictures in the morning during the summer!

It's hard to tell from the photo above, but, some of the succulents are flowering!

This patch of aeoniums has spread well beyond the edge of the planting bed! I love the way things look when they spill out of their planting beds, but, it might be time to cut them back and plant the cuttings somewhere else! It's hard to tell from this photo, but, I've planted succulents all along that side wall, as well.
Do you remember the refrain from the song, Scarborough Fair? "Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme".*

I don't have parsley or thyme, anymore (both plants died), but, I have sage and rosemary growing next to each other, and the sage is flowering.
Most of the lantana bushes are not flowering, right now, but, this bush is in full bloom!

And the red climbing rose is flowering, too:

And in the same planting bed as the climbing rose, the asparagus ferns are thriving:

There are a few other plants in that same planting bed, including osteospermum seedlings (they'll probably bloom, next year), gladioli, the pomegranate tree at the other end, and these alstroemeria (also known as Peruvian lily or parrot lily)

That is the tour of the front garden in June! The temperatures have remained unusually mild, so far, and I'm still watering at least twice a week, so things are still relatively speaking green. But, it will heat up in July and the garden will turn brown!

So many pretty things are blooming in your garden. I am looking longingly at the lantana and asparagus fern. We had both in Houston that looked lush like yours. Lantana is an annual here, and it will be the end of the season before it grows very big. But I have planted some, and I will wait.
ReplyDeleteThank you, June. I love flowers and I'd fill the garden with them is water was not a concern. I think I might buy some more native wildflower seeds for the front garden, next year, and see how they do.

Your garden is lovely. I do remember the song Scarborough Fair. The herbs in the song that I have growing are sage and thyme. (Plus oregano, mint and basil). your lantana is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Celie. I have a mint plant at the back, growing in a container, but, something is eating the leaves! The lantana has been flowering well this year.

DeleteThose succulents look in great shape, also that Lantana. I have a pink rose that has started flowering. I think it is a Rugosa Rose, double petals and very scented. I remember decades ago taking a walk in the early evening and finding that the flowers around had a glow about them. I'm wondering now if that is the best time to photograph them.
ReplyDeleteDH's eye drops routine is getting easier today, which is good as we are in this program for about 4 weeks! At least the number per day gets less after a while, and one type stops altogether after a week or two.
Thank you, Bushlady. Your pink rose sounds lovely. I might try taking pictures in the evening! My cell phone is not a high quality one and it doesn't take the best pictures, anyway, but, it was a free upgrade through my phone company, so I'm not complaining. :D

ReplyDeleteThank you, Jules. I've used the rosemary from time to time, but, I haven't used the sage, yet. They are not herbs traditionally used in curries, etc.

DeleteYour garden is lovely and it's interesting to see the different plants that fare well in your conditions. I think lantana is an annual here; it's pretty but I don't grow it because there are other annuals that I prefer, i.e. cosmos. Your red rose on the trellis is beautiful and I hope mine ends up looking as good.

Thank you, Eileen. Lantana is supposed to be a drought resistant plant and it tolerates the afternoon/evening sun in the front garden. I didn't get any cosmos, this year, unfortunately.
DeleteI have parsley, sage and rosemary. I used to have thyme but was thinking only the other day that it seems to have disappeared. I am not surprised lantana does well for you - it thrives in Southern Japan too.

DeleteOne lantana plant died out, completely, over the winter; I'm debating whether to replace it or not.
That Aeonium really looks nice. I don't have any succulents (maybe I need to change that) I always enjoy seeing yours. They really do like your yard don't they?

Thank you, Debra; yes, succulents do like the climate and conditions in my garden. I think you'll be able to have some succulents in containers in your patio area - you might need to bring them in during the winter, though.
