Happy First Day of Summer!

First Green Beans Harvest

Wednesday was Summer Solstice!  I celebrated by harvesting the first green beans!  Flat Italian bush beans and round French bush beans.

M and I picked the last of the peaches, today.  There weren't many and the birds had got to most of them!  But, there were a few good ones and I gave a few to M and I'm hoping to send the rest to my daughter.  Two of her friends (my late friend A's two daughters) are planning to drive up to spend the weekend with her and celebrate one girl's birthday.  They have offered to take a few things up to my daughter and I am sending a care package - the peaches, a small container of blueberries, a couple of jars of peach jam, a couple of jars of peach chutney, and a couple of jars of canned peaches.  I have a jar of jam and a jar of chutney set aside to give to the girls, too.

Later, I cut up a few more peaches and canned them, too.

In the evening, neighbor S called and asked if I'd like to have a few fruits and vegetables that she has in her refrigerator as she and her daughters are off on a nearly month long trip to Europe and she didn't want the food to go to waste.  I said I'll take them.  She and her daughter N brought me a bag filled with apples, carrots, onions, a bell pepper, celery, some individual containers of ready to eat overnight oats, a lemon, a small carton of milk, and one egg that they hadn't been able to use up!

Groceries from S

I will not need to go grocery shopping for fruits and vegetables!  I cut up the bell pepper and froze it.  I will probably freeze the celery, too.

I did a load of laundry, too, and cleared the dining table (I had kept all the items I was using for jam and chutney making on the table for easy access).  All went well until I accidentally dropped a jar of honey on my toe!  It smashed my toe and it hurt!  It could have been worse, though, because it was a glass jar!  Thank goodness it didn't break and cut my toe!  Even so, I felt very sorry for myself, with a painful toe!  I iced it, but, it still throbs!

Today, I am grateful for:
- A sunny, warm way
- The peach harvest
- The first green beans
- Neighbor S giving me more food!
- The jar of honey didn't break and cut my foot!

Today's joyful activity was picking the last of the peaches!

Plans for tomorrow include tidying up and organizing my kitchen cabinets so things don't fall on my feet and smash my toes when I go to get something out!

How was your first day of summer?  Did you do anything special to celebrate summer solstice?  What are your plans for Thursday?

  1. Lucky for you that the glass jar didn't break but your poor toe, I hope it feels better soon. What a nice gift of fruit and vegetables from your neighbour and a lovely crop of green beans from your garden. I'm sure your daughter and her friends will be pleased to receive your home made jams and chutney.

    1. I'm very thankful that the glass jar didn't break, Eileen, or we could have had more than a smashed toe!
Wasn't it a nice gift of fruit and veggies? I am sending the green beans to my daughter - I will have more beans to harvest in a few days and I will enjoy those.
One of my daughter's friends stopped by, today, and picked up the items I'm sending to my daughter. I gave her a jar each of jam and chutney and the three individual pots of overnight oats as she said her dad eats them.

  3. Ouch, your poor toe! I hope it's not broken and recovers quickly. Good thing the glass didn't shatter. Your garden is very prolific this year! And how nice of your neighbor to give you the food. Rest today and keep your toe iced and up!

    1. Thank you, Celie; I think the toe is just bruised, not broken. I'm very glad the jar didn't break!
The garden is producing well, isn't it? All that rain earlier in the year helped!

  4. Oh, know a honey smashed toe. I hope it is feeling some better now. Maybe you can look at your free-to-you-groceries and forget about it for a little while. How nice that your daughter's friends are driving up to spend some time with her.

    1. It's all shades of blue and purple, today! I was wearing my new knitted socks and I think that helped (it would have been better if I had worn shoes, but, I generally don't wear shoes inside the house). I took it relatively easy, today. Yes, my daughter and her friends are looking forward to spending some time today. One of them picked up the items I'm sending to my daughter and there are a few treats for them to enjoy, as well.

  5. That is a very artistic arrangement of beans on that blue background! I didn't know that you can freeze celery, I learn something new every day!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Yes, I freeze celery and it is good for adding to stir fries, soups, casseroles, etc. I cut the stalks into short lengths or slice them up, and freeze them in small baggies (or, you could freeze them in a single layer in a tray and then, put them in bags after they are frozen to make it easier to take out just what you need. I don't blanch them before I freeze them.

    1. Thank you, Jules. Wish you the same! I sent the beans to my daughter, when I sent her a care package through two of her friends who went up to visit her. :) And planted more beans for the summer!
My toe is feeling better, now, thank you. :)

  7. Oh my, I bet dropping that honey on your toe really hurt. Like you said, thank goodness it didn't break but it's hard to think of the bright side as you're dealing with the pain. Hopefully it's starting to feel better.
What a nice food bounty from neighbor S before she goes away for a month. A nice variety of fresh food that you will surely use.

    1. It was very painful, Debra, and I felt very sorry for myself, afterwards! But, it's getting better, now.
It was a nice selection of food from S, wasn't it? Especially as I had come to the end of the stock of celery and bell peppers I had in the freezer! Now, I have enough to last me the rest of the summer (both are vegetables I use very sparingly to flavor some dishes as both cause some digestion discomfort if I eat them raw or in any quantity).
