Free Bookcase |
On Sunday, neighbor T's son R, daughter K, and K's friend who had come down from Seattle, Washington to help out at the yard sale continued to hold the yard sale. I took them some of the cake I had baked and took another look at the items for sale, as they had put out items that had been inside the house on Saturday. I managed to resist an unopened box of Christmas cards, but, picked up a board game. I don't have many board games and often, when my daughter is home and her friends come over, they like to play board games and my daughter would usually tell them to bring their own board games because we don't have many. When I asked K how much she wanted for the board game, she said I could just have it as she was not going to charge me after bringing them cake! LOL.
Later, when they were done with the sale, I saw them putting several items by the curb for bulky item pick up, including a bookcase and a small table. I went over to talk to them and asked if I could have the bookcase, I'd give them $5 for it. Once again, I was told I could just have it and R brought it over and carried it into the house for me. What a blessing! Plus, I was keeping things out of the landfill! I picked up the small table, too:
Little Table |
The little table is about 14 inches square and 14 inches high and very light. I guess it would be called an occasional table? My first thought when I saw it was that I could keep a houseplant on it. The legs were a bit wobbly and I tightened the screws and it is fine, now. It's a bit scuffed, as you can see in the photo, but, it fits in with the rest of my scuffed up furniture. I have set up the electric space heater on it for now.
What about the bookcase? It measures 28 inches wide, 36 inches high, and 12 inches deep (14 inches at the middle of the top, as it curves a bit); the height of the shelves are adjustable. Did I need another bookcase? Probably not! Did I want another bookcase? Oh, yes! I had been wanting another bookcase for a long time, but, I thought I should declutter my possessions to fit the storage space I already had rather than buy yet another storage unit. However, when there is a free bookcase and claiming it would keep it out of the landfill, I was more than happy to take advantage of it! I cleaned it up and made room for it in the family room:
New Home for the Bookcase |
All I did was pull out the small dining table away from the wall and center it under the hanging light fixture which is where we used to have the table for the longest time. That left a space under the mirror for the new bookcase.
But, wait a minute, Bless! Weren't you supposed to be decluttering this month? Instead, here you are, adding more stuff to your house!
Yes! My plan is to use the bookcase to store various overflow items that are currently scattered around because they don't have an assigned home. I am hoping that adding more storage will help me with subtracting some of the clutter by keeping the various flat surfaces cleared. Covered storage would have been better, but, the price was right on the bookcase. If I can get some covered containers, that would keep the visual clutter to a minimum.
I am keeping track of all the new items I am adding to the house and hopefully, I'll be able to declutter as many items as well and it will all work out!
Today, I walked for 15 minutes without experiencing any pain and I was happy I was able to do that. I also chatted with neighbor T's son and daughter (they were putting more stuff out, including a lovely old trunk and a smaller bookcase, but, I have absolutely no more room for any other furniture!) and said hello to neighbor S and another neighbor. Later, I dusted and vacuumed the living room, dining area, and family room. Then, rearranged the furniture a bit to make room for the new bookcase. Finally, I took the trash cans to the curb for pick up in the morning.
Brunch was pancakes with mackerel curry (had one pancake with syrup, as well); dinner was leftover pancakes and mackerel curry! Snacks included chocolate cake and peaches.
Today, I am grateful for:
- More free furniture!
- A productive day
- Chats with neighbors
- The space heaters
- A working vacuum cleaner
Today's joyful activity was rearranging the family room furniture to fit in the new bookcase.
Plans for Tuesday include continuing to tidy and sort out the family room, which, by the way, is the room of the week on the cleaning cycle.
How was your Monday? What are your plans for Tuesday?
I'm so glad you're enjoying more pain free walking. That is really good to read. And it is a lovely bookcase - all the better for being free. But keep decluttering
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angela. I was really happy that I didn't feel any pain when I walked, yesterday. Hoping for more pain-free walking in the future! I'm happy with the new bookcase and I know I will use it. But, yes, I will continue with the decluttering, too!
DeleteYou have done really well and more storage space is always good and that is such a nice bookcase. What a good swap you made cake for a board game you certainly do have lovely neighbours.
ReplyDeleteI am going for another Covid jab today, I keep saying no more but then I think I should have it. I expect I'll be unwell tomorrow!
Thank you, Eileen. I did get a good swap for the cake, didn't I?
DeleteI hope you feel fine after your Covid jab! Drink plenty of fluids both before and after. I'm going for my booster this afternoon, myself!
The shelves look so great beneath the mirror that you would think they had always been there.
ReplyDeleteAnd when I saw the occasional table, my first thought was also a houseplant :)
Thank you, Jules. The bookcase does look good under the mirror, doesn't it? That mirror seemed to be calling for something to sort of complete it! Yes, I'll have to get a nice new houseplant for that little table! :)
DeleteThat is a great bookcase! You got an excellent deal on it and the cute little table! Can't beat free! Those don't count as clutter, since they will help you corral items and provide storage space. It's good to read that you walked without pain. I hope that continues.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Celie. Neighbor T had it in her living room, near the entrance, with some collectibles and family photos displayed on it. I must tell her that I picked it up for my family room. I hate to see good furniture to go the dump and free is the best price, isn't it? :D
DeleteI was happy I was able to walk without pain, yesterday. I, too, hope that it continues. Today, I am going for my Covid booster, so, we'll see if I feel like walking in the evening (didn't get around to walking in the morning, today).
I think that the fact you had a plan for your "new" bookcase means it was not an extravagance! (Not that you paid for it! :-) ) I sorted out my wardrobe recently, and despite putting aside a lot for the charity shop, I still have an embarrassing amount of clothes. I MUST not buy any more. (Except maybe...!!!)
ReplyDeleteYes, I had been saying I needed another bookcase for some time, now. Sometimes, you just have to add more storage.
DeleteWell done sorting out your wardrobe! I, too, have quite a lot of clothes, although much of it was given to me by my cousins. They like to shop and dress stylishly; I dislike shopping and am not fussy about fashion. Other than some sweat pants and sweat shirts (to replace old worn ones), a new pair of shoes, and some socks and undies, I haven't bought any new clothes in the past 3 years. Haven't had to!
Bless reading your blog and this post, I think you do quite well on living sustainable :) To me the joy you show in simple things is one of the greatest!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jozien. What a lovely thing to say! Yes, I do find joy in simple things. :)
DeleteThe bookcase looks just right under the mirror. I'm glad you were able to get in some walking without pain. Nice to have a chat along the way as well. You have been quite busy, too.
ReplyDeleteI've got about 17 items to donate so far. I would like to meet that challenge of 50 for June. The smoke from the wildfires keeps me puttering indoors, although I did walk to the mailbox with a mask when it didn't seem quite as smoky as earlier.
It does fit there very nicely doesn't it? We bought that mirror in 1976 or 77, when we were in Wisconsin! My step-father bought it from a friend's brother's shop for $40 and my mother was aghast at the price because we really didn't have $40 to spend on a mirror! It is very heavy, but, it's been carried from Wisconsin to Florida to California and hung on a wall in every home we've lived in since.
DeleteI am happy I was able to clean half the house yesterday. I got my Covid booster, today, and have been taking things a bit easy.
Well done on the decluttering! I know you'll meet the challenge (and maybe even exceed it!) I'm making slow progress, so far.
Do be careful of the smoke from those wildfires. Stay indoors and run an air purifier if you have one.
It's hard for me to resist a bookcase, too. However, I don't have a place for another one, so I'm glad that no one has offered me one lately. :)
ReplyDeleteI really couldn't resist this bookcase, June; if nothing else, I would have put it in the garage to store some boxes of files! I did decline a small cabinet and a second, smaller shelf unit.
DeleteLovely bookcase! I wouldn't have been able to resist rescuing it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sharon. We can always do with another bookcase, can't we? :D
Delete"it fits in with the rest of my scuffed up furniture" lol!!
ReplyDeleteSo funny :)
What a score you got with the bookcase and the little occasional table
(I use that phrase too)
I don't think bringing useful items - free useful items at that - into your home interrupts your ongoing decluttering effort.
You are living your life in your home and need to structure your life in the way that's beneficial to you. And those items certainly fit into that goal.
And did I mention they were free? lol
Ha, ha, yes, just about everything in my house is well used and shows it! I will continue to declutter, but, the new furniture pieces will be useful. Besides, the price was right! :D
