Broccoli Harvest |
We harvested the broccoli, today! There were two stalks (heads?) of broccoli - this one and a smaller one on another plant. I gave the smaller one to M and he ate it right then and there and declared it to be delicious! LOL. I brought my one inside and washed it, then, put it in a vase of water. I will cook it tomorrow.
In addition to the broccoli, I harvested a handful of snow peas. And we planted the sweet potato I had rooted.
It was a sunny day with an afternoon high of almost 70F. I walked again, for a total of 20 minutes, with a brief rest after 15 minutes.
I spent the afternoon knitting and watching videos. Later, I watched news and chatted with friend R; still later, I video chatted with my daughter.
Brunch was an egg salad sandwich; dinner was rice, chicken curry, and mango curry. I had a fruit salad for dessert, made with a banana, half a large apple, two mandarin oranges, a handful of raisins, and some cashews. There's leftover fruit salad for tomorrow, as well. I didn't write down a meal plan, this week, but, I had taken out a packet of frozen chicken curry, earlier in the week, and I think I will make a stir fry, tomorrow, with leftovers for another couple of meals. It should work out just fine.
On Wednesday, I was grateful for:
- The broccoli harvest!
- M's help with the garden
- A warmer afternoon
- Time to relax
- Being able to video chat with my daughter
Wednesday's joyful activity was knitting.
Plans for Thursday include doing some laundry and more knitting.
How was your Wednesday? What are your plans for Thursday?
You are doing great with your walking. Consistency is the name of the game and the part of exercise that I struggle with.
ReplyDeleteThank you, June. I read somewhere (on another blog, I think) that the best way to establish a new routine was to tack it onto the end of another, already well established routine. My daily morning prayers are a well established routine and now, I walk after I've said my prayers; it's not a routine, yet, but, I hope it will become one. :)
DeleteBeautiful edible bouquet! What a good idea to keep it fresh.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I did make it to the mailbox and found enough to justify the visit (although the walk was enough to make it worthwhile). Today I need to go and pick up prescriptions that I requested by phone yesterday, query a bank charge, and pick up a few groceries, before going to church for a quiet time.
Thank you, Bushlady; after all, the broccoli head is actually composed of flower buds, isn't it?
DeleteGlad you made it to the mailbox and were rewarded with some mail (as well as the benefits of the walk). Sounds like today was a busy day, followed by some quiet time at the church. Several years ago, when I was working in downtown, I discovered a chapel in the lower level of a shopping mall a few blocks away. It was a rather difficult time in my life and I used to go to that chapel during my lunch breaks a couple of times a week to just be. It was always very dimly lit and silent in there and very often, I was the only person there. But, it felt good to just sit and empty my mind of all thoughts and just absorb that sense of stillness I found in there. It's been many years since I last went there; I wonder if it is still there.
I've never eaten raw broccoli but know you can and it's full of goodness of course and I'm sure you will enjoy yours cooked just as much. It's a nice sunny day so I will try and do a little work in the garden later.
ReplyDeleteI used to prefer raw broccoli to cooked (especially good with a creamy ranch dressing to dip into), but, these days, I tend to have it cooked.
DeleteGlad you had a sunny day; I hope you were able to get some gardening done. Does Tilly help you with any digging that needs to be done? :)
Your broccoli looks amazing! Do you know I have never thought about placing the head in water until it's time to cook it. That's a clever tip, thank you! And you've made me want curry now too 😂 I think it will be quorn curry and rice tomorrow....
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary-Lou; it's the first (and so far, only) good sized broccoli I've managed to grow! Hope you enjoy the quorn curry and rice when you make it. :)
DeleteYeah! Good that you did some more walking. Wow, that broccoli looks quite large. I can't believe you're already getting a harvest of food.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sharon. I'm pleased that I have been walking every day for the past several days.
DeleteYes, the broccoli and the snow peas are considered to be cool weather crops here. They are planted in the fall and harvested in the spring, before the hot weather starts.
On Wednesday (yesterday) I got a heart monitor which I will have for two weeks. Today I went to women's Bible study at church with 12 women of all ages.
ReplyDeleteHi Terra; I hope the heart monitor will provide some useful information to help your medical team make a diagnosis. Hope it isn't anything serious. The Bible study group sounds interesting. How often do you meet?
DeleteBeautiful broccoli! I like that you have it in a vase (with a beautiful little crochet doily/mat thingy :). And M has declared it delicious - what more could you want from your garden?
ReplyDeleteI too just made some egg salad and I have my standard pot of bean soup going on the stove. Pintos and black beans. I am looking forward to it for tonight's dinner.
Yesterday I spent some time cleaning and straightening the pantry shelves. I find that kind of job very rewarding. I had a dentist's appointment so I didn't finish but I hope to finish it up today.
Just 2 more shelves.
Thank you, Debra. It's the biggest broccoli I've managed to grow, so far! The vase is that cut glass ice bucket that I decluttered and took back, again, a couple of years ago! I kept it to use as a vase and as you can see, I do use it. The mat is what I crocheted with some fabric in my stash!
DeleteEgg salad and bean soup! I just bought another dozen eggs, today, $3.49 with a digital coupon; reg. price $3.99; I will be making more egg salad, myself. Your bean soup sounds good!
Well done with tidying your pantry shelves! I need to do that, myself (and update my pantry supplies list!) Hope your dentist's appointment went well and you were able to do the last two shelves of your pantry.
Unlike M, I prefer my broccoli cooked, but it is one of my favourite vegetables, and Lily eats some almost everyday! X
ReplyDeleteOh, that's wonderful that Lily eats broccoli almost everyday! So many children don't seem to like it. It's not my favorite vegetable, but, it's one that I will eat without fussing. :) I cooked the broccoli today and had some with my dinner.
