Rainy Thursday

Raindrops on Roses

It rained very early on Thursday morning and, again, in the evening.  The garden appreciated the rain, I'm sure.  The day was chilly and grey.

The power went out, once again, at noon, but, fortunately, it came back on in about 15 minutes.  I don't know what caused the power outage - it had been windy, earlier, so maybe a tree fell on some power lines or a car skidded on the wet roads and hit a power pole?  Or, maybe the crews were doing some additional repairs after Wednesday's power outage.  My cell phone had a 56% charge left in it, so, when the power came back on, I recharged it.  And because the house was chilly, I switched on the gas heater to warm up the whole house (I had been sitting in front of the electric space heater when the power went out) - that way, if the power went out again, I'd start off with a warm house!  The power has stayed on and I turned the heater off after the house warmed up.

I took my walk in the afternoon, when the rain had ceased.  I couldn't walk at my usual pace because I felt some pain in my left hip.  So, instead of walking for 15 minutes at my usual pace (which isn't all that fast, anyway), I strolled for 30 minutes!  I figured I got in about the same number of steps!

Aunt C called in the afternoon and I had an interesting conversation with her.  Afterwards, I did some quilt repairs.  Later, I watched news and knitted.  I cooked some rice for dinner and had leftover chicken, cashew curry, and mango curry with the rice.  I also cleaned the kitchen and my bathroom, ran the dishwasher, and did a load of laundry.  Still later, I video chatted with my daughter.

On Thursday, I was grateful for:

- The power outage was of short duration and we had power for the rest of the day
- Rain for the garden
- Being able to walk for 30 minutes at a slow pace
- Working appliances
- Phone chats with family, emails with friends, video chatting with my daughter

Thursday's joyful activities included knitting and video chatting with my daughter.

Plans for Friday include tending to the garden with M.  He was able to buy me a small Serrano chili plant, he said, so we will plant that out and maybe plant the bean seeds, too.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

  1. I'm glad your power cut was only for a short duration this time, let's hope that it's fixed and won't go off again. I hope the pain in your hip eased and doesn't return.. Your roses are beautiful.

    1. Me, too, Eileen. Very glad that the power cut didn't last long and things seem to be fine, today.
My hip pain eased afterwards; it usually happens when I walk. I have arthritis in my lower spine and my joints and bones ache, anyway (side effects of one of the medication I take). But, walking is supposed to help.
Thank you; the first roses of the year always look beautiful, I think. The weather is mild enough that they stay fresh for more than a day. In the summer, it is so hot and dry, that the roses wither by afternoon.

  2. Raindrops on roses and whiskers on Dancer...😻🎹
I'm glad you didn't have a long outage. Your weather doesn't sound very pleasant right now. We still have our warm (over 70°F yesterday) weather! We will enjoy it while we can, even ate lunch outside and probably will today when I get off this laptop and make some! We bottled over 28 litres of syrup yesterday evening. The helpers did a good job and today I will sort it into boxes so they all get their share.

    1. Ha, ha, yes! Whiskers on Dancer, who created quite a mess, last night, as he tried to dislodge something that should have been left in the litter box!
The weather has improved, today. It's still cloudy, but, not dark and gloomy like it was yesterday. It's 58F right now, but, the high is supposed to be 63F. It's supposed to be sunny with a high of 70F over the weekend, though.
Wow! over 28 liters of syrup! You were busy! And you are making me want pancakes (or, better still, waffles!) with syrup, now. :)

  3. Blogger is not playing nice with me! Beautiful rose. Power cuts or outages are so annoying. Thankfully you did have your cell phone to let your Daughter know you were OK. Hope you have a good weekend. ... Mary-Lou at Patio Postcards :)

    1. Sorry to hear that Blogger is not playing nice with you, Mary-Lou. You are not the only one; Eileen at A Bracelet of Days is also having Blogger issues.
Yes, power cuts/outages become a problem because we are now so dependent on having electricity when we need it! The majority of our appliances don't work without electricity and it's hard to keep a well stocked freezer if the food can't be kept frozen! Fortunately, the power was restored relatively quickly, each time.
Thank you; I'm planning to have a relaxed weekend. :) Hope all is well with you and Mr. Man, Mary-Lou, and hope you both have a good weekend.

  4. Lovely rose. Yikes. Another power cut! I wonder why that's happening. Glad you were able to get in your walk later in the day.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Yes, another power cut - I am assuming they are doing some repairs to the lines or something. I'm trying to get the walking done in the mornings, just to get it over and done, but, afternoons are warmer, right now. I walked, today, too, although I really had to talk myself into doing so. :)

  5. The rose is lovely! I hope your hip is feeling better now. Arthritis really is a pain! I have some in my right knee, very annoying. We really need rain as it's been very warm and dry. Hope for some tomorrow.

    1. Thank you, Celie. I bought the plant several years ago, from a home improvement store, as a bare root plant; I don't remember the name of the rose, but M suspects it is a Don Juan climbing rose. Whatever it is, it seems to be doing well!
My hip is fine, now, Celie; it only hurts when I walk! And after that bout with sciatica, I'm extra cautious when I feel aches and pains. But, I walked again, today, and it was OK. I'm sorry to hear about having arthritis in your right knee. I hope your knee feels better, soon.
Hope you get some rain over the weekend. I'm ready for a little sunshine, myself. :)

  6. Glad your power outage was short lived. We have outages occasionally, but our lines are buried in the neighborhood, so that helps.

    1. Yes, I was happy that the power outage was of short duration. And I am grateful for the people who work all hours of the day and night to make sure that we have power at the flip of a switch. I read that the main reason why our power lines are not placed underground is the cost associated with doing so.

  7. We suffered through another power outage recently, 5 hours. The summer thunderstorms are wreaking havoc as usual. My friend L had hers go out 2 days later for the same reason. Mother Nature will get her respect one way or another. Stunning rose. How lucky to be able to enjoy roses as well as jasmine.

    1. Sorry to hear about the power outages. 5 hours is a fairly long time to be without power! I'm not sure what was causing ours to go out, but, it was rain-related, no doubt. Thank you! The red roses on the semi-climber in the front garden look lovely. The jasmine is coming to the end of its flowering, now.
