Cloudy Monday

Pink Rose

Monday was mostly cloudy, with the daytime high in the low 60s.

I managed to walk for 20 minutes, today.  I did 15 minutes and then, 5 additional minutes.  Needless to say, I feel very happy with myself.

Afterwards, I watered the back garden and picked a few more pea pods.  Tossed another soccer ball over the wall, too!

Remember the self-seeded broccoli growing in the back garden?  Here's how they looked back at the end of November, 2022:

Self-Seeded Broccoli Seedlings: November 2022

Here's how they looked in January 2023:

Self-Seeded Broccoli Seedling: January 2023

They had grown by March:

I peeked inside the plant later in March for the Winter Photo Scavenger Hunt:

A Peek Inside the Broccoli Plant

And here it is, today:

Broccoli Stalk/Head: April 2023

I will wait until Wednesday to pick it, when M is here to do the honors.  Two of the other broccoli plants have much smaller stalks of broccoli; the plants are smaller, too.

Later, I did two loads of laundry and hung everything up (inside the house) to dry.

In the afternoon, I sewed on the quilt I've been repairing.  The repairs have been completed:

The Repaired Triangles Quilt

There are 14 rows of 40 triangles per row; so, 560 triangles, plus 28 half triangles at each side.  I replaced 237 full triangles plus at least 20 of the half triangles!  Where there were several pieces torn in a sort of cluster, I covered them with a hexagon and there are also two larger triangles to replace four smaller triangles.  It would have been faster if I had just sewn a new quilt top, but, it was satisfying to repair the quilt, one piece at a time.  What will I do with my afternoons now that the quilt has been repaired?  I've one less excuse to procrastinate on some housework and paperwork!  LOL!

In the evening, I watched the news, took the trash cans to the end of the driveway, and started the car.  I cooked rice for dinner, warmed up a package of frozen chicken curry, and made a cucumber salad to go have with it.  Brunch had been one of the yogurt flat bread/roti I had made when I made the "pizza" with some katta sambol from a jar.  Katta sambol is a mixture of onions, small flakes of Maldive fish (a type of dried fish), lime juice, and red chili flakes, all ground together.  I usually buy mine already prepared from the Sri Lankan store, but, it can be made at home, too.

For dessert, I made one of my famous dump cakes, using a can of fruit cocktail which had passed its best by date:

Fruit Cocktail Dump Cake

Afterwards, I washed what felt like a mountain of dishes and tidied the kitchen a bit.

On Monday, I was grateful for:
- Being able to walk for 20 minutes
- Water for the garden
- Roses and snow peas and broccoli
- Working appliances
- What I was able to accomplish

Today's joyful activity was completing the quilt repairs.

Plans for tomorrow include putting away the laundry and tidying the house a bit.

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for the rest of the week?

  1. Wow, that was a lot of repair work on the quilt! It likely is lovely, so I can see why you wanted to fix it back up. The hexagon fits in very well with the triangle pattern! The rose is lovely also. How great is that to get self seeded broccoli! Your walking is going well. I hope the hip pain doesn't flare again.

    1. My daughter loves that quilt because it is so soft and she asked if I could repair it. Of course it is so soft because the fabric is so worn from use (I sewed it in 1980 or so). I might have to change the name of the quilt from Triangles to Triangles and a Hexagon! :D
The garden is doing well with the rain we've had and I'm thrilled with the broccoli!
I walked again, today, and sat for a minute when the hip started to hurt. Then, resumed the walk until the time was up. It's not very painful, but, I don't want to ignore it and have it turn into a sciatica flare up!

  2. Well done that broccoli plant, I'm sure the broccoli will taste good and well done on the quilt repairs it looks as good as new. It's good to hear you are managing to walk a little more each day.
Our rest of the week involves a dental appointment for husband and my annual mammogram.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I'm happy with the quilt repairs and I am looking forward to harvesting the broccoli, tomorrow. :)
I hope your husband's dental appointment and your mammogram both go well.

  3. Your volunteer broccoli plant looks good. Do you have problems with cabbage butterflies and worms there? They are a real problem here. I planted broccoli last weekend, but need to get it covered to help slow down the worms. I haven't seen that many butterflies yet, but I have seen a few.

    1. We do have plenty of cabbage butterflies and, last year, I remember their caterpillars were eating the broccoli leaves, but, that was mostly in the summer. This year, something is eating the chrysanthemum leaves and the leaves on the orange tree!

    1. Thank you, Jozien; I guess yesterday was the day when many projects were completed.
I'm glad you, too, had a good day on Monday, with loving words being spoken. May it continue to be so. :)

  5. You are doing well with your walking. That is very kind of the broccoli to self seed and produce like that! Your daughter's repaired quilt looks lovely, well worth the effort to repair. After all, it has history. I'm surprised you managed to get a photo without Dancer on it, though!
We had rain this morning and I went into town with DH who had a checkup at the doctor's, and I ran errands while he visited with friends over coffee. But later the rain stopped and the sun has come out. I'm going to have to head to the mailbox, now that I have no excuse to be lazy. I need my walks as much as you do, Bless.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady; the walking is coming along well and I'm thrilled that the broccoli self seeded and produced a nice stalk of broccoli! I will harvest some of the leaves, too.
Dancer hasn't shown much interest in this quilt. I think he only likes new quilts. :)
I'm glad the rain stopped and the sun came out; I hope you were able to walk to the mailbox and back. With your Sunday afternoon walks to the river and back, I think you walk a lot more than I do, but, slow and steady is the way to go, isn't it?

  6. How wonderful to have that free broccoli! I bet it will be the sweetest you ever taste! I need to check out dump cakes ... or maybe it's better that I don't. Hooray for the finished quilt. It looks so vibrant now!

    1. It's wonderful to have some free broccoli! Shall I freeze a portion of it for when you come to dinner? :)
Dump cakes are the ultimate convenience desserts! Canned fruit and cake mix! You dump the contents of the can of fruit (or pie filling) in a pan, dump the contents of a box of cake mix on top (just the dry mix), dot it with pats of butter (or pour melted butter) and bake! What comes out is more like a crumble than a cake, but, I like it!
Seems to me that the more I repaired the quilt the more areas I found needing repairs, but, finally, it is all done! It does look brighter with the new fabric, doesn't it? :)

    1. Thank you, Sharon. I almost didn't walk, today, but, I told myself that if Sharon can walk in freezing weather, I can walk when it is only 60F outside! :D
I, too, am glad that I was able to repair the quilt. Daughter can use it for a few more years, now. :)

  8. Congratulations on finishing the quilt repair. You've been very diligent about sticking with it. Job well done!
Your broccoli looks very good and you are also having a good snow pea harvest this year too.
Good use for your fruit cocktail!

    1. Thank you, Debra; I'm glad the quilt is done and I can move on to other projects. :)
I've picked the broccoli, although I haven't cooked it, yet. Yes, good snow pea harvest, too, and I have some of it frozen for use, later. The can of fruit cocktail worked out well for the dump cake. I've also seen some recipes where the fruit cocktail is added to the cake batter and I might make one of those cakes, another time.

  9. Your broccoli has grown well, and I expect it tasted delicious :)
I have started to tidy my garden bit by bit, whenever I have a spare moment, but there is still much to do before it looks presentable. I thought of you yesterday when I tended to my tiny lemon tree. It is still indoors at the moment, as we are forecast below zero temperatures again next week. X

    1. We harvested the broccoli on Wednesday! I gave M some of it and he ate it right then and there! LOL.
Tidying the garden is quite a project, isn't it? But you'll have your garden looking great in no time, I know. Glad to hear that your lemon tree is going strong! It will soon be warm enough for it to go outside for the summer!

  10. Kudos on the broccoli. And after repairing that many triangles you certainly deserve the indulgence of dump cake. That quilt just speaks "come cozy up with me!"
