Sunday

Potato Piroshki, Apricot-Filled Bars, and Champagne Grapes
Compliments of Neighbor S

Neighbor S asked me if I'd like to have some potato piroshki and I said, "Yes, please".  It is a type of bread roll filled with a savory filling - in this case, potato, but, I've had some filled with a ground meat mixture, too, and fried.  She also gave me two pieces of apricot filled bars and some green champagne grapes, which are so sweet.  The little container on the plate with the piroshki has a salt based seasoning mixture to have with them.

Potato Piroshki

They were so good!

We had a day time high of 96F, today; apparently, it was a new record high for this date!  I might have switched on the stand fan in the family room in the late afternoon!  LOL!

I had a very relaxed day, today.  I finished sewing the backing for the quilt and started sandwiching the layers together.  Once upon a time, I would have spread the whole thing in the middle of the living room floor, got down on my hands and knees and basted it together.  These days, I'm afraid my knees won't thank me if I were to do that and I am not sure if I'd be able to get up off the floor, either!  So, I spread everything on the bed, which presented its own challenges and my spine is not happy with all the bending over!  But, I have the top and the bottom pinned together and will continue with it, tomorrow.

Later, I browned the ground turkey I had thawing in the fridge.  I was planning to make spaghetti sauce with it, in my meal plan, but, I made some unplanned changes to the meal plan, so, I might just freeze the cooked ground turkey, instead!  I can use it later on.

I called and spoke with neighbor T, today; she said she is doing well, but, she expects to spend at least another month at the assisted living facility.  She is happy with the level of care she is receiving, but, concerned about the costs.  However, she is not well enough, yet, to be on her own at home.

Later, I chatted with friend R.

Breakfast had been the last of the three bananas I had bought on Friday.  I'm glad I had bought only three bananas because I don't like them when they are ripe and this last one was getting almost riper than I like because the heat causes them to ripen really quickly.

Lunch was the last portion of the stir-fried ramen noodles I had made;  I added a few roasted peanuts to it and some hot sauce and it was delicious!

Dinner was the piroshki neighbor S gave me and I had some salad with it.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Neighbor S treating me to a delicious meal
- Phone calls with neighbors and friends
- Video chats with daughter who is feeling OK after the migraine
- Emails from a cousin and from a friend
- The lovely warm day!

Today's joyful activity was assembling my quilt.

Plans for tomorrow include sewing a bit on the quilt, although, if it goes up to 98F as the forecast says, then, I might not want to be sitting with a lapful of quilt while I sew (I don't have a quilting frame).

How was your Sunday?  What are your plans for Monday?

  1. Bananas are the main reason we make some many trips to the local fruit & veg shop. Mr Man has to eat a banana a day because of some medication he takes - they turn so quickly! I'm sure the finished quilt will be beautiful & hopefully no body parts are injured in the finishing touches.

    1. I need to eat bananas for the potassium, but, I don't eat one everyday; maybe I should! It would require at least twice a week shopping trip, though! My friend was suggesting I put the quilt up on the dining table to sew it - I might try that! :)

  2. Your banana comment reminded me of my parents who liked their banana ripeness differently. My dad said that my mom liked her bananas when they snapped, and my mom said my father liked them when they were rotten. It was one of their running jokes. :)

    1. Too funny about your parents liking their bananas at different stages of ripeness! That's just like me and my daughter! I like them when they are still green and my daughter likes them when they are quite ripe. When she is home, I will eat the bananas on the first couple of days and she will eat them once they are too ripe for my taste! :D

  3. You had a busy day. Those treats look very good. I have never heard of them but they do look good. I am glad you are one step closer to completing your quilt. That is always a good feeling. Having coffee with a friend this morning and looking forward to it. It has been a while. xo Diana

    1. The treats have all been consumed as of this afternoon, and they were all delicious! I prefer piecing the top to quilting and binding, but, it will get done, eventually. :)
I hope you've had a fun visit with your friend and enjoyed the coffee. :) Have a wonderful week, Diana.

  4. Your gifts of food from your neighbour look delicious. You are having some lovely weather it was almost like winter here today, very windy, cold and raining. I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to get up off the floor either and I hope your back doesn't give you too many problems from leaning over the bed while making your quilt. I went and had my sixth Covid jab today, the nurse assured me it would be okay.

    1. The food was delicious and I ate every little bit of it! :D We are having a mini heatwave, but, I am OK with that! I prefer the heat! My friend suggested putting the quilt up on the dining table while I work on it and I might try that!
I'm glad you decided to have the sixth Covid jab. I hope you won't feel any side effects from it. Just plan to take it easy for a day or two.

  5. Oh I would definitely get in the queue for the apricot bars! Looks as if you managed to get ahead of your grocery budget again ... you did really well this month so that definitely makes up for all the extra spending you did a while ago ... I think you are still comfortably in the black, no?

    1. Looks like I lost the reply I just typed up! Not sure what happened!
Yes, the apricot bars were delicious - a shortbread type bottom layer topped with apricot jam and a crumbly topping.
I came under budget for groceries, this month, and I think I'll stay in the black as long as I don't make another trip to the Sri Lankan store! LOL!

  6. I like the sound of the Piroshki, although I thought they were two large sausages at first glance :)
Mind your back, while pinning the quilt. Xx

    1. The piroshki is one of my favorite items and I used to buy them from the Armenian bakery, back when I went shopping in person!
My friend suggested I put the quilt on the table to pin and sew it - I haven't tried that, yet, but, it might work better than bending over it on the bed!

  7. Another great gift of food! Glad the quilt is coming along. I find my knees aching already. Can't imagine what they will be like as I age. It doesn't help that I fell over the other week and went smack right on my knees!

    1. It was a lovely gift of food, Sharon, and much welcome.
Oh, no, I hope you didn't hurt yourself when you fell! Knees are the first to go, I've been told! LOL.

  8. The piroshki look delicious. We had a great Indian takeout at our son's, something we all enjoy.
Their neighbour recently brought them some banana bread and they had shared some of their homegrown veggies, so I told them about your neighbourhood and the "food-go-round"!

    1. They were very delicious, Bushlady. I enjoyed them very much. I've seen recipes for a baked version, too, and they sound very similar to Sri Lankan fish/meat filled bread rolls!
Indian takeout sounds good, too! Looks like your son and his neighbors have a "food-go-round" too! :D

  9. I can still get up and down ok (although hardly graceful) but my knees would be bothered by kneeling on the floor. A few years ago a garden kneeling pad was blowing through my yard in a storm. Without a way to figure out whose it was, I brought it in and cleaned it up and now I used it for indoor jobs which require getting down on the floor. Like cleaning the bathtub and other lowly pursuits.
I was going to suggest your dining table for your quilt work and I see someone else mentioned that. Of course then you have to clean off the table first- it's always something lol
Your food from neighbor S looks delicious. Very yummy with those potato piroshki and the apricot bars.
I love a meat sauce for pasta. Normally I make a tomato sauce and don't add meat. But on special occasions I will make a meat sauce and I love it. And meatballs. I love them too.
Maybe we will really go off the charts and have spaghetti and meatballs for Thanksgiving.
    And pumpkin pie.
    :)

    1. Using the garden kneeling pad for indoor tasks is a brilliant idea!
Yes, putting the quilt on the dining table will require a bit of clearing (I currently have a basket of fruit and a basket of sewing supplies on it), but, it's doable. :)
The piroshki and the apricot bars were delicious! These piroshki were better than the ones I've bought from the Armenian bakery, but, I'm afraid to ask S where she bought them from because I don't want her to get any ideas! Today, she gave me pizza!
I usually add ground meat to my pasta sauce - it used to be ground beef, but, now, ground turkey is cheaper than ground beef (and, probably, better for you, too!) Meatballs would be delicious, too! I'm all in favor for spaghetti and meatballs for Thanksgiving, with pumpkin pie for dessert! One of my friends said it was traditional in her family (of Italian descent) to have pasta on Christmas Eve.

  10. The piroshki look so good and how lovely of S to share food with you again. I'm with you as far as eating bananas go ... I only like them when they are nearly green and can't face them at all when they start to go brown.

Good luck with getting the quilt finished. The dining table idea sounds like a good solution and should save your back and knees.

    1. The piroshki was very good and S has shared more food with me, today, giving me some pizza! She was going out of town for a couple of days, she said, and I guess she didn't want to freeze the leftover pizza (although she told me that I could freeze it, if I wanted to).
Thank you; yes, I'm going to try sewing the quilt on the dining table. :)

  11. Glad your daughter is feeling better. Piroshki is new to me. I will have to check out a recipe for more info. I do love the variety of food you have introduced me to here on the blog, even if I have never tasted any of it.

    1. Thank you, Susanne. I've found some piroshki recipes online where they bake the rolls; might be something to try making this winter. :)
