After the Rain

.

Lantana Bushes on Wednesday

Lantana Bush on Saturday

Friday's rain brought quite a lot of rain to some parts of southern California and caused flash floods, rock slides, etc.  But, in my area, we had mostly drizzle and light showers which brought about 0.25 inches of rain.  A quarter of an inch of rain is not a lot, but, it is more than what we received in all of July and August!  The garden appreciated the rain!

It also broke our heatwave which brought us 10 days of triple digit temperatures!    We had much cooler temperatures, today, with a daytime high of only 85F!  It was 80F inside my house and I almost felt cold when I woke up!  LOL.  I took a warm shower instead of a cold one and it felt good!

After I checked the weather forecast this morning, I called friend A, shortly after 9:30 a.m., to let her know that the forecast only called for light scattered showers and I would be able to visit her in the afternoon if she still wanted me to.  She said she will check with her daughters what their plans were - the original purpose of the visit was to be with her and keep her company while her daughters went out for the afternoon - and call me back.  She called me back at 1:00 p.m. to say that her daughters had decided not to go out, after all, so she didn't need me to come and keep her company.

Afterwards, I did two loads of laundry and hung everything up to dry, cleaned the litter box, swept the bathroom, and swept and mopped the kitchen.

Then, I walked around the garden to check on the plants.  Most of the clumps of purple fountain grass look dead, but, this one clump shows signs of new growth:

I was also very pleasantly surprised to discover that there was a rose on the red rose bush:

A Small Red Rose

Neighbor S and her mother were seated in S's front garden and we waved at each other before I went back inside.

In the evening, I watched some TV programs, chatted with friend R, and video chatted with my daughter.

Brunch had been toast with butter and ginger marmalade.  For dinner, I had one of the cup of noodles soups as it was finally cool enough to enjoy some soup!  I ate one of the Asian pears for a snack.

Today (Saturday), I am grateful for:

- Friday's rain
- The cooler temperatures
- Working appliances
- Phone calls with friends
- Video chatting with my daughter

Today's joyful activity was checking on the garden and seeing signs of new growth after the rain!

How is your weekend coming along?

  1. We also finally got some much needed rain and everything is greener and the grass doesn't crunch as much when you walk on it now. A welcome change for sure.

    1. I'm glad that you, too, received some rain, June. I hope it is a bit cooler, too.

  2. Well at least you got some rain, just not very much! Are you expecting to get some more or are you heading back to the heatwave? Your poor garden looks like it definitely needs more rain but it's good to see the new growth on the grasses and that beautiful red rose.

I've spent most of the weekend watching the TV coverage of all the events surrounding the movement of the Queen's coffin to Edinburgh and the proclamations throughout the UK announcing the start of King Charles' reign.

    1. The rain we received was just the proverbial "drop in the bucket" but, I'm appreciative of it! No more rain in the forecast for the rest of this month, but, the temperatures will be in the 80s for the most part. Today we are at 88F at 2:00 p.m. That is a comfortable temperature for me. :)
We are observing the 21st anniversary of the September 11 attacks, over here, and although most of the commercial TV networks are showing football games, I have watched a couple of programs on public TV commemorating the 9/11 attacks.

  3. I'm glad you had some rain at least and cooler temperatures at last. It is still sunny and not too hot. DH's return flights went so well that he arrived home much earlier than anticipated and we sat on the deck together. We expect to go for our walk by the river this afternoon.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady; the rain was very welcome, especially as there is no more rain in the forecast for the rest of this month, at least!
I'm glad your DH had safe return flights home and arrived home earlier than expected. Hope you have a lovely afternoon walk to the river and back and spend a lovely rest of the day, together. :)

  4. It rained all day yesterday here, which was needed. Wish I could send you some, though it's good that you got some at least. I'm glad it's cooled some there and some of your plants survived the heat. I got the new Covid vaccine yesterday, for the omicron variant. Today I've been sluggish, so nothing accomplished!

    1. I'm glad you received rain that was needed, Celie. Yes, we need more rain here, but, some areas are being told to expect lots of rain and flash floods! In fact, there was a flood alert broadcast over the TV, earlier in the evening! What is that saying? When it rains it pours!
You are the first person I "know" who has received the new vaccine! I hope you don't have to go to work, tomorrow! Give yourself a couple of days to rest and I hope the side effects will be minimal!

  5. What a relief for you to have some rain even though not nearly enough. How lovely to have a rose appear, it's beautiful. We remembered it was the anniversary of 9/11 but our television coverage is all about our late Queen's reign and journey towards her final resting place.

    1. Yes, it was a relief to get some rain, Eileen. Apparently, it is raining quite a lot in some other areas in the state, because there was a flash flood warning for various counties! We were partly cloudy, but, dry.
Yes, it was the anniversary of 9/11 and I spent a good part of the day watching programs related to that. There was news of the late Queen's journey to her final resting place, too, and I expect there will be live coverage of the funeral, itself, but, not much else.

    1. Glad you got some rain and hopefully, it was rain you needed. It always feels nice when the rain clears and the sun shines, again, doesn't it?

  7. 1/4 inch of rain is a nice amount. Hopefully some of it soaked down into the ground for the plants. And how nice that things cooled off for you. I chuckled when you said you actually felt cold in 80 degrees.
    lol
We've been getting some rain here a well. Nice gentle rain.
My rain barrel is full from the last day of August when we got an inch of rain which was most welcome after our very dry summer.
Today the washing machine repairman comes. I will cross my fingers that he can fix it and I will be back up and running.

    1. I think the rain mostly evaporated, but, hopefully, some of it did soak down. I would have liked a little more rain, of course, but, I'm glad it didn't rain so much as to cause any damage in my area! Other areas of the state have had a lot of rain in a short period of time, with floods and mudslides as a result.
I'm glad you are getting some nice, gentle rain and your rain barrel is full. :)
Hopefully, the washing machine was repaired and you are able to do the laundry at home. :)

    1. The rain we received in my area was good. Other parts of the state, especially burn areas without any vegetation to hold the earth together, suffered mudslides!
