Warm on Friday

Tomato Plant

Another warm day on Friday with a high of 94F.  I loved it, of course.  I responded to blog comments, watched some online videos, played a few sudoku games, watered the houseplants, cleaned the litter box, checked on the garden, did the dishes (some by hand, the rest in the dishwasher), scrubbed the stove top including under the burners, and mopped the kitchen.  I also called my doctor's office to find out if they received the scan results, but, they said not yet.  The nurse I spoke with said she'll call the hospital on Monday to follow up.  If I don't hear from her by Tuesday, I will call her on Thursday (the doctor's office is closed on Wednesday as she goes to another location on Wednesdays).

In the early evening, gardener M tended to the garden.  He bought me a tomato plant.  He said that he received a discount because the plant was a bit wonky and didn't want me to pay him back for it!  He planted it in the same planting bed as the moringa tree; the bed had recently been cleared of all the self seeded wildflowers that had finished flowering.  The tomato plant already has two tiny tomatoes and I'm hoping there will be more over the summer.  I believe it is an Early Girl tomato.  Last year, I got a good crop of tomatoes from the Early Girl plant.

Later in the evening, friend A called and so did friend R.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Warm, sunny days
- M gifting me a tomato plant and tending to the garden for me
- Water for the garden
- What I was able to accomplish
- Phone calls from friends

Today's joyful activity was walking around the garden and checking on the plants.

Apple Seedling

Ignore the $19.99 written on the pot!  This is a recycled pot that was in the shed.  But, the apple seedling was grown from an apple seed that I had planted!  I planted a few seeds and two sprouted, but, only one has made it.  The seeds were from a gala apple or fuji apple, but, most apple trees are grafted and there is no guarantee that a tree grown from a seed will bear fruit that is true to the apple it was taken from, but, that is fine with me.  I don't even know if the seedling will grow into a fruit bearing tree!  But, it is fun to grow it from seed, isn't it?  Have you grown an apple tree from a seed?

No big plans for tomorrow.  It is supposed to be another warm day, although a bit cooler than today.  I might relax and do some sewing for fun (there are those cat blocks waiting to be made into something).

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. Hopefully you will get your scan results soon and don't have to chase them up for too long. I hope you get a good crop of tomatoes from your plant, M is very generous gifting the plant to you it doesn't look wonky at all :) Your apple seedling is doing very well, fingers crossed for it but it's not something I have ever tried to do. The weather has improved here for the weekend so some sunshine will be good and I will sit outside and enjoy it.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; hopefully the scan results will be in, next week.
Yes, M is very generous and I agree with you, the plant looked perfectly fine to me! I hope it will provide me with lots of tomatoes! Last year's crop was so abundant, I still have some in the freezer and I've only had to buy fresh tomatoes once, since then, and that was for a salad we prepared for the Buddhist monks, back in January.
I'm thrilled to bits with the apple seedling! :)
I'm glad the weather has improved where you are and you can sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. No doubt Tilly will enjoy being out in the sunshine and fresh air, too. :)

  2. I hope your scans are back soon. I have quite a few tomato plants now- some I have grown from seeds, others were gifts from my SIL. I have a few flowers but no sign of any tomatoes yet... I've moved two pots out of the greenhouse and onto the patio - it was getting a bit overcrowded in there, and I want to see how being in or out affects the plant growth.

    1. Thank you, Angela.
I hope your tomato plants do well out in the patio and you get a nice crop of tomatoes! :)

  3. 94F is way too hot for me. I don't know how you cope with it!

I hope your scan results are available when you phone back on Tuesday, I expect it's hovering in the back of your mind until you hear the result.

I've never managed to grow a plant from an apple seed. We used to try when we were young but I think we used to forget and Mum would eventually get fed up and throw our attempts out!

    1. The house stays at least 10 degrees cooler, Eileen, which makes it quite comfortable for me. :)
Thank you; hopefully, the scan results will be in when I call. :)
I am quite surprised I was able to get this apple seed to grow! I put 6 more seeds to germinate, yesterday (all from the apple I cut up for my fruit salad). No idea if any of them will grow big enough to bear fruit, but, it's fun to see if they will grow!

  4. I hope you don't have to wait too long for your scan results. How lovely to have 2 wee tomatoes already formed on the "wonky" plant, which actually looks perfect!
Yesterday was a mixture of rain and sun but I did manage to get some laundry dried on the line, in between showers, as the radar showed a few good hours. Today is sunny and DH is already working in the yard.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. The tomato plant didn't look wonky to me, either! Not that I would have minded it, anyway! Just grow and give me some tomatoes!
Sounds like you made the best of the weather, yesterday! Glad you are having a sunny day, today; hope the weather will remain sunny for your Sunday, too. :)

  5. I have never grown an apple seed, but my father used to sprout citrus seeds from fruit he would eat. It was too cold here for the plant to ever bear fruit, but they made lovely house plants.

    1. This is the first time I've done this, myself, June (but, I kept 6 more apple seeds to see if they will sprout, today!) I haven't tried growing citrus seeds, but, I think I might try some orange seeds. :)

  6. Great gift of a wonky plant! Please post pics of the fruit so we can monitor for wonkiness! I'm disappointed that none of my cucumbers or pumpkins have germinated. I'm wondering whether to try my luck on Freecycle... it's too late to re-sow now. All the best to the apple seedling! If nothing else, the tree will be attractive.

    1. It was, wasn't it? I'll definitely post pictures! The fruit can be as wonky as they like, I wouldn't mind! I'm sorry your cucumbers and pumpkins haven't germinated. Hopefully, you can find some on Freecycle. The seeds from the blue pumpkin that M gave me are growing in my compost pit! I'm really hoping the apple seedling will grow into a nice tree - I'll need two trees, apparently, for cross pollination, if they are to bear fruit and it can take 8 to 10 years for an apple tree grown from seed to bear fruit. I might have to buy an apple tree or two, if I hope to grow my own apples!

  7. That is hot! I hope you get your scan results very soon.
Your apple seedling looks good and healthy. I currently have two small trees which I have grown from seed. There are no signs as to whether they will bear any fruit yet. There are also signs of new growth on my four lemon trees, which is reassuring, as they had all dropped some leaves after I moved them outdoors. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. I read that apple trees grown from seeds will take about 8-10 years to bear fruit. So, maybe you might have to wait a few more years... Glad to hear that your lemon trees are picking up after dropping some leaves, earlier. It's fun to grow fruit trees from seed, isn't it?

  8. That's a pretty good looking tomato plant for being deemed wonky and marked down. It will probably end up being the star in your garden this year.
What's the rule on those early fruit flowers? I heard they should be pinched off? What do you do? Whatever you do, I'm going to do lol
I love how you a growing an apple tree from your apple seed.

    1. I thought it was a perfectly good looking tomato plant, myself! M said he bought a bell pepper plant for himself, and because a few leaves were eaten by an insect, he got that on discount, too! Both plants were reduced to $2, which is a great price for our area. I think, too, he got a discount because he's a regular client at this nursery. :)
I've read that one should remove the early flowers, but, I don't do that and M doesn't either! This plant also had two small tomatoes on it and we left them in place, too. I have two tiny tomato seedlings that I grew from seed, as well, but, they are about 3 inches high and will probably take a long time to grow. My apple seedling seems to be tolerating the heat, so, I'm very hopeful it will grow! Wouldn't it be grand if it gets some fruit, eventually?
