Presidents' Day Monday

Crocosmia

Although there was rain in the forecast and the morning was a bit cloudy, we didn't get any rain in my area.  I spent a happy and productive morning in the back yard, cleaning all the pots and planters, etc. that were stored in the shed, hosing everything down and keeping them to dry before putting things back in the shed.  The only thing I haven't put back is the grill because I want to scrub it, properly, before putting it back.  That's on the agenda for tomorrow.

Neighbor T had called me while I was in the back yard, so I called her back around noon.  She had a bag of recyclables that needed to go in the recycle bin, which her daughter had already taken to the curb for her and she was not sure if she could take it to the bin, herself.  I told her to leave the bag on her back doorstep and I went over and put the bag in the bin for her.  Afterwards, she called to thank me and I told her not to worry about it, that I was glad to be of help.

Later in the evening, I heard someone shout, but, I couldn't quite hear what they were saying.  I asked my daughter if she heard anything and she said it sounded like one of the children, next door and I didn't pay any attention.  Then, I heard the sound of a truck engine running, but, one of the neighbors across the street is a truck driver and, sometimes, he parks the truck he is driving, outside, with the engine running for a few minutes, so I didn't pay much attention to that, either.  Then, I noticed the unmistakable rotating red lights of a fire truck parked outside and I rushed outside to see - two fire trucks were in front of my house and T's house and an ambulance was just pulling up!  A few seconds later, the paramedics went into T's house!  I quickly called T's daughter and then, spoke with one of the firefighters who spoke with T's daughter.  Apparently, T had fallen near her back door and the shout I had heard was her calling out to me!  Fortunately, her neighbors on the other side had heard her and they had called the paramedics!  Even more fortunately, T was not injured!  Just bruised her shin, but, otherwise OK.  The paramedics were with her for sometime and had checked her out.  I stood outside and waited until her daughter arrived, just a few minutes after the paramedics left the house (but, the ambulance remained parked by the corner, waiting for her, I believe).  Then, I went inside my house.  T's daughter called me, later, to give me an update and I spoke with T, as well.  Apparently, she went to pick up something and lost her balance.  I must suggest to her daughter that they get one of those medicalert devises for T.  I shall call her, tomorrow, to check on her and see if she needs anything.  I feel so bad that I didn't realize she was calling out to me!

The rest of the evening was quiet.  I watched news, prepared dinner, did the dishes, etc., called and checked on friend R, and made my meal plan for the week.    I also harvested the garden broccoli, today:

Broccoli - Just before harvesting

After Harvesting

The biggest head of broccoli is about 3 1/2 inches across; the rest are less then 3 inches.  But, there's enough for a meal and there is one plant that didn't produce a head of broccoli yet, so there is still the possibility that there might be another, bigger, head of broccoli in the future!

Today, I am grateful for:

- T didn't get injured from her fall
- The neighbors on the other side of her heard her and checked on her
- Paramedics and other first responders
- I was able to contact T's daughter
- Broccoli harvest!

Today's joyful activity was finishing up the shed!  The gardening supplies that are in the garage still have to be moved over, but, I might wait until Wednesday, when M is here, to do that, so he can figure out where to place them (since he's the one who uses them!)

Plans for tomorrow include doing some housework and baking.

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. You weren't to know that T had had a fall so don't feel too bad. I agree those medicalert devices are a good idea, my mother had one. Thankfully T was not injured from her fall and you live in an area where all the neghbours look out for each other.
You worked hard clearing your shed, a job well done. Good idea to let your gardener organise the items he uses.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I called T, this morning, to check on her; she said she has some bruising, but, she's OK. I do feel bad about not checking to see if the shout I heard was from her; hopefully, there won't be a next time, but, if there is, then, I will be more attentive.
I am so glad that the shed monster has been conquered! :D A little tweaking of the space to accommodate all the rest of the gardening stuff, but, I think it can be done. The next big project will be the garage!

  2. Medic alert devices can be a godsend--if people will use them. My parents kept theirs in a cup in the dining room most of the time. Which was very frustrating to us, but learned that that is a common occurrence. My mother eventually fell in the middle of the night when she got up to go to the bathroom and broke her hip and lay on the floor calling for help for many hours. Regular help came in the next morning and got her the attention she needed. It was a horrible time, but I'm not sure she would have been wearing her device to sleep in.

    1. Yes, the alert devices are only as good as people are willing to wear them and use them! I'm sorry to read about your mother's fall! Thank goodness that there was someone checking on her in the morning! It must have been a long and painful night for your mother, though!

    1. Yes, it was! I called T to check on her, this morning, and she said she has some bruising, but, she's OK. I told her I will bring in the recycling bin once it is emptied and not to worry about it.

  4. That was a scary time for T and it's good to hear that she wasn't seriously hurt. Your suggestion of the medicalert device is a good one... we had one for my late partner and, although it was never used in an emergency, it bring both of us peace of mind to know that he could call for help if needed. Have you thought about what you'd do if you fall again once your daughter returns to Berkeley? Maybe it's something to think about for yourself as well?

Your broccoli harvest is cute, but at least it'll do one meal. I do eat quite a bit of broccoli but it's not really my favourite, but is useful for stir frys and the like.

    1. Yes, it must have been very frustrating to T that I didn't hear her shout for help, but, thank goodness the other neighbors did! I called and checked on her this morning and she said she has some bruising, but, otherwise, she's OK. My daughter and I had been discussing getting one of those medical alert devises for me, too! Right now, I am supposed to carry my phone with me at all times, but, I don't always remember to do so!

Broccoli is not my favorite, either, but, I will eat it and, as you say, it goes well in a stir fry. It is also one of our "cool weather" vegetables, so, one of the early vegetables I can grow. :)

  5. Oh my goodness. What a scary thing with T falling. That goodness she is ok and didn't hurt herself. A medical alert thingie would be a smart thing for her to have.

Your broccoli looks really good even though it's so small. I hope the flavor is good.

I told her that I will bring in her recycling bin when it has been emptied and not to worry about going to fetch it. She uses a cane, but, I think a walker might be better for her (although, my mother would fall even with a walker!)

This year's broccoli crop was a little disappointing, but, the peapods are making up for it! :)

  6. Your poor neighbour! It must have been incredibly frightening for her. She is lucky to have you nearby. I love the pic of the flowers. It's such a glorious sunny colour

    1. She was shaken up, I'm sure, but, I've spoken with her twice, today, and she seems OK (she sounded better in the afternoon than she did in the morning). I brought in her recycling bin and asked if she was OK for dinner and she said she was. I'll call and check on her, tomorrow, too.

The crocosmia are a very vibrant shade of orange, aren't they? The hummingbirds love them!

  7. Too much excitement with your neighbour T. Thank goodness the other next door neighbours heard her and also that she wasn't seriously hurt. Sometimes it works out that it is someone else's turn to hear the call for help and respond, so don't beat yourself up that you didn't realize she was calling you! It was good that you had at least saved her from going out to her recycle bin earlier.
The broccoli looks great. I sometimes think of Honor Min and her advice when I see your posts about all the green vegetables you are including in your meals. I think she is looking down on your garden with satisfaction!
A bit of freezing rain today. I did get down to the stores before it started but the mailbox can wait until tomorrow. I already picked up Friday's mail on my way home this morning.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady; yes, it was unfortunate that I didn't hear her, but, the other neighbors did hear her and they were able to call the emergency personnel, so all worked out well. I called and checked on her, twice, today, and brought in the recycling bin for her. I asked her if she was OK for dinner and she said yes. Maybe her daughter will check on her after work, today.

Oh, yes, Honor Min was always urging me to eat more vegetables and walk more, wasn't she? She was a kind soul, bless her.

I'm glad you were able to get your shopping done before the freezing rain started. Good idea to wait on collecting today's mail. I've been checking my mail box all afternoon, but, haven't received anything yet (today is when the grocery ads come out). Hope you have a relaxed evening, Bushlady. :)

  8. I'm glad to hear that T was ok in the end. I suppose she is more shaken up than anything else.
You've done a great job in the shed. If the gardening stuff can now be rightfully homed it will make the garage easier to tackle I'm sure. (Say I, several hundred miles away!)
Broccoli is one of my favourite vegetables so I'm envious of your crop! It's great for soup too!

Thank you! Yes, the garage - I go in there, look around, get overwhelmed, and go back out! LOL.
I am sorry I will not be able to keep this lot of broccoli until you come to dinner, but, I'll make sure to have a dish of broccoli as a side at the dinner! :) I'd better write this dinner menu down, somewhere! LOL.

    2. Oh Bless, I was counting on you to have kept detailed notes of all the dishes you have promised me! Are you saying I am going to have to go back through all the comments and write them down myself? Really?

    3. Oops! I thought you were keeping a list of the dishes I was supposed to prepare! :D I know there was chicken curry on it (without tomatoes) and maybe moringa? And now, broccoli! :D

  10. Poor T. I am relieved she wasn't too badly hurt. It was fortunate her neighbours heard her call out, but I do think it is a good idea to suggest a medicalert device. X

    1. Yes, it was very fortunate her other neighbors heard her! A medical alert will be good for me, too, I think, once my daughter leaves! I've fallen twice in the back yard, so far!
