| Lemons from the Garden |
A sunny, warm day today, after yesterday's rain and cooler temperatures.
M was here to tend to the garden, this morning. He enjoyed a couple of the peach muffins I had made and then, he loaded up the blue recycling bin with most of the rest of the cans and bottles that I had collected in the shed. I haven't checked in there, yet, but, I think it is almost time to empty it out, sweep and wash the floor and then, decide what to keep and what to declutter.
Afterwards, he did some weeding in the back, near the lemon trees. He picked two buckets of lemons from one tree - just the ones that were on the lowest branches, he said, because the weight of the lemons were causing the branches to bend almost to the ground! What an abundance! Such a blessing, too! I brought them in and washed them. Then, I called neighbor E across the street and asked him if he'd like some lemons. He said he would, so I filled a grocery bag with lemons and took it over. We chatted for a minute or two - he's not been in the best of health, recently (non-Covid related), but, he's doing as well as can be expected.
Neighbor S has her own lemon tree (so does neighbor T), so I knew she wouldn't want any lemons, but, I wondered if the neighbor in the house next to hers would like some. I going to knock on her door to ask her, when her husband came home, so I asked him, instead, and he said they would love to have some lemons. So, I filled another grocery bag with the rest of the lemons and took them over. That took care of the lemons we picked today. I am grateful to have an abundance of lemons to share with my friends and neighbors.
There are still more lemons on the trees to make lemonade, lemon marmalade, and if I can make enough room in the freezer, I can freeze some lemon juice for later.
Today, I am grateful for:
- It rained enough yesterday that I didn't have to water the garden today
- A sunny and warm day
- M helping with cleaning out the shed in addition to gardening

Today's joyful activity was sharing lemons with neighbors!

A marvelous collection of lemons! And very kind of you to share these. I love cooking with lemons, they add so much flavor and brightness to a dish. I hope you get a good crop of peaches,too! Celie
ReplyDeleteThank you, Celie. I think my neighbors appreciated the fresh lemons. I add lemon juice to almost all the dishes I cook, too. :)
DeleteWow! What a lovely harvest and so nice of you to share with others. I must admit that I like a Lemon Meringue Pie though it's been years since I made one!
ReplyDeleteOoh, lemon meringue pie sounds so good! It used to be my mother's favorite pie! I can't remember when I last made one, but, maybe there will be one in the near future! :D
DeleteThose are some nice looking lemons. And they're huge! If I were your neighbor I'd certainly take some. As I write this, I have some boiling on my stove with cloves and the house smells wonderful. They really clean the air. So there's another use for some of those lemons. LOL Denise

DeleteI think having your own fruit trees is such a joy & blessing. I use fresh lemons along with vanilla & rosemary all simmering together for a lovely light air freshener scent.
ReplyDeleteThat it is, Mary-Lou. I am happy to be able to have some fruit trees in my garden. I have lemons and I have rosemary - I must try simmering them for an air freshener!
DeleteLemon meringue pie would be top of my list but I wouldn't say no to some lemon drizzle cake either. I mainly use lemons in drinks or to make lemony salad dressings.
ReplyDeleteI've just waved my friend and her granddaughter goodbye. They've been here most of the morning (Thursday) so it's been another sociable day so far.
Lemon meringue pie and lemon drizzle cake would both be delicious! Not low sugar diet friendly, though!

Oh, I do hope we'll get more rain (we are still in a long-term drought, with our reservoirs at an all-time low) and I'm looking forward to the peaches! :)
I am filled with lemon envy! Those are just beautiful. Citrus does not usually grow here, but I do have one neighbor with a Meyer lemon tree that produces (abundantly some years)
ReplyDeleteI have two Meyer lemon trees and a third one which is a sucker from the root stock of one of the Meyer lemon trees! The lemons pictured above are from that third tree and I have no idea what kind of lemons they are! But that tree is just full of lemons!
DeleteThe lemons look wonderful. I have sometimes made a batch of bottles of lemon syrup which can be watered down to make a summer drink, and I have also made lemon curd (or lemon cheese which it is often called over here).
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady. I might try making some lemon syrup! That sounds like a good way to use up a few lemons! I haven't made lemon curd, but, I imagine it would be nice on some scones! :)
